Pick 54: Fremantle – Brendon Abbott

Position: Forward
Height: 186 cm, Weight: 91 kg, DOB: 1/1/1995
Club: Claremont
Projected draft range: 50-rookie
Plays like:

A lump of a lad, Brendon Abbott played 15 games for Claremont at league level in 2014 and has resolutely pushed right up into contention as a middle to late draft pick. Playing mostly up forward, Abbott bagged 18 goals this year, including bags of five and four. Whilst his strike rate in front of goal sits at 50 per cent from this year, kicking 18.18, Abbott’s shreer strength in a marking contest is one of his biggest weapons. He has a deceptive burst of speed off the mark which helps him create separation on his opponent, but he’s quite the aerialist with a good leap and vice-like hands. Abbott loves the contested stuff, he monsters marking contests, but he loves to b-line the ball, wiping out opponents and playing with a hard edge that coaches and teammates love. He offers courage and physicality, and has a bit of a strut in the way he plays. He projects as a development midfielder at the next level, such is his mature body and competitiveness. He does need to apply himself more in terms of his tackling (average 1.4) and two-way running, but there is scope to extract from the enforcer-type forward.

Kevin Sheehan has Clem Smith in his top 40 by position

Clem Smith
Wesley College / Perth
3.2.1996 Height: 177cm Weight: 78kg
Energetic Small Defender/Midfielder who can break the
game open with his ferocious attack on the ball and dash
from the contest. The way he pressures the opposition
defensively is a highlight. All-Australian in 2013, he
averaged 17 disposals (8.2 contested) in six matches at the
2014 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Member of NAB
AFL Academy

I would like to see us pick him up also but he just doesn't seem like the kind of player that we draft unfortunately. Small, fitness issues and not the best skills. If you look at our recruitment over the last few years we have gone for players with good skills, good fitness base and capable of playing in multiple positions. If you put all of that together it just doesn't seem like we will go for him unfortunately.

I fear that Clem Smith, designated as my personal Troy Cook replacement (you know - close your eyes when shooting for goal open them again with glee when he is about to tackle) may end up with the wiggles. What a tragedy, this will break Clem's heart and means that he will face life with permanently bad hair (some sort of gangster style thingy). Come on Freo, do the right thing, and bring Clem to the light!

Main board said that a lot of clubs have written a line through him. Hopefully, WC is one of them.

The article on him on in previous pages while a real feel good story didn't bode well if has issues with skin folds and endurance and gets his younger foster sibling to run around with him and gee him up. I certainly have no problem drafting him and is the type of player we need but would be looking at to ultimately replace spurr/duffield but as a third round or rookie pick I would think. Still think there should be better players available at our 2nd pick and if the slime gets him with their 3rd just before us there is not much we can do.

Yeah, I fear that Freo may have drawn a line through him as well, as someone else pointed out, he is not the sort of player that Freo has wanted lately.

But that is not the point - I want him at Freo - and then I am willing to shirtfront anyone who wants to pick him as their buddy ahead of me (just seems the right way to do it).

I fear the Sibosado thing may have turned Freo off someone like Clem. But I agree with you, at the end of the day we need someone to stop the small forwards of the opposition (who continue to carve us up year after year) and if he can do that I want him too. Can he have two buddies, otherwise I defer to you. I'm pretty soft.:$

Trying to figure out the Sibosado reference but not getting it? How are they alike?

Touk Miller looks like a good pickup if hes available in the 2nd round?
Him and 100 others apparently

THURSDAY’S draft could be the most even talent pool ever, according to Collingwood’s recruiting boss.

Derek Hine says predicting who will go where is almost impossible and every club is likely to walk away happy.

“It’s a really unique draft this year and certainly in my short time in the role I’ve never seen a draft where it’s been so open, pretty much from pick 1 all the way through to 101, if you like,” he told the Magpies website.

in that case, they wouldn't mind giving us #5 or #9 for our pick since it is such an even draft ;)
