Pick 54: Fremantle – Brendon Abbott
Position: Forward
Height: 186 cm, Weight: 91 kg, DOB: 1/1/1995
Club: Claremont
Projected draft range: 50-rookie
Plays like:
A lump of a lad, Brendon Abbott played 15 games for Claremont at league level in 2014 and has resolutely pushed right up into contention as a middle to late draft pick. Playing mostly up forward, Abbott bagged 18 goals this year, including bags of five and four. Whilst his strike rate in front of goal sits at 50 per cent from this year, kicking 18.18, Abbott’s shreer strength in a marking contest is one of his biggest weapons. He has a deceptive burst of speed off the mark which helps him create separation on his opponent, but he’s quite the aerialist with a good leap and vice-like hands. Abbott loves the contested stuff, he monsters marking contests, but he loves to b-line the ball, wiping out opponents and playing with a hard edge that coaches and teammates love. He offers courage and physicality, and has a bit of a strut in the way he plays. He projects as a development midfielder at the next level, such is his mature body and competitiveness. He does need to apply himself more in terms of his tackling (average 1.4) and two-way running, but there is scope to extract from the enforcer-type forward.
