In 2014 I expect to see Blicavs in a variety of roles - relieving ruckman for Simpson/HMac, on a wing and pinch-hitting forward and back. Aside from rucking, we haven't seen too much of him in the other roles. His improvement has been steep so far and if he continues that way he won't play much VFL football from here on in (played 1 VFL game in 2013 IIRC). Call that "not in our best 22" if it makes you feel any better. I suppose the match committee must be "blinded by the story" if he plays another 22 AFL games in 2014?

Well, I don't know. Did I say that? Did I use those words in relation to the match committee? I'm reminded of a certain phrase......

"If you can't quote it, don't assume I said it or believe it. If in doubt, try re-reading my post"

Hmm, interesting. Personally I think the issue is if Simpson and Vardy are fit, they would be our most logical ruck combination. Where would Blicavs play in that situation? Selection is going to be very tough no matter what.

Personally, Partridge, I reckon he will be a lock next year. He just needs to add a bit more size, improve his contested marking and have a bit more awareness and improve his decision making when being tackled to really be a tough match up for opposing teams.

Absolutely. He could become an amazing winger for one thing with that athleticism. Be very interesting to see how he's used.

First 6? That's jumping the gun a bit on the back of a good second half of the year for a 21 year old. Overall he'll be a mainstay and the way he's performing he's going to be a jet, but at the moment, if he had 5 bad games in a row he should and would be dropped. Enright, for example, unless injured, doesn't get omitted regardless of form. There's a distinction there.

That's why we all have opinions I guess. I'll stand by that. I picked him out at the start of the season so I'm very happy with how things turned out in that regard.

We don't have enough young guys who have really solidified themselves in the senior team. Yet. One big positive from 2013 is that he now has.

It will be. I'm perhaps not quite as buoyant as CE is about his ability to play that "Matthew Richardson" type wing role - he needs to demonstrate that he can actually consistently win enough of the footy as a smaller sized player but I wouldn't put it past him. He is easily the most interesting player on our list.

And you could argue the most unique too.

I would argue Motlop and Christensen are there after two solid years. Caddy, Guthrie and Murdoch are the next to come maybe by the end of 2014. Don't forget whilst Guthrie did play 18 games in 2012, he did get dropped for the final series on form.

Yep agreed. The point being we need more and more of them coming through. Hopefully we can add Smedts as well. He'll be nudging 50 games next year if everything goes well.

I think Ballroom is being fashioned into a utility that plays wherever his height and speed create the most awkward match-up. Longterm I think he will fill that Mackie role of 3rd man up and then working across the flanks and up the wings.

needs to learn how to kick though (Blicavs), it's great to be an exceptional running freak but it's another thing to actually play football and mark or kick when needed and Blicavs struggles to take the game on far too often because of his lack of football skills.

Got shown up in most of the big games this year, teams with good structures in place but the reduction of the interchange rotations next year will help his game but certainly needs to spend all summer learning the finer aspects of the game.

you said this well and you are right. a taller version of tenace we may very well be.

You say he is regarded highly internally, the fact that they drafted a 29 year old player to play his exact position would seem to point in another direction. Moreover, the match committee only gave him a handful of games and then only against the likes of GWS which again seems to suggest they don't have much faith in him.

According to the VFL GF match report on the Cat's website, Brown is listed among the best - again - using their own KPIs not the Big Footy blinkers. And the report says, "Playing in defence, Geelong's Mitch Brown repelled well." He is clearly the club's best young developing KPD and has been starved of a string of games in the AFL enjoyed by others.

The backline is getting long in the tooth. The irrational Brown haters will eat their words in 2014 if we are lucky enough to keep him.

when i try and see blitz in a winger role i still have trouble with his speed of movement, he still seems to move like a ruckman to me in terms of picking the ball up, avoiding tackles, getting ball to foot etc. he is 198cm after all, and the tallest mids i can think of are the likes of brennan and munday, i think brennan is about 195cm and mundy about 192cm. they just move differently to blitz. i would think if not in ruck, blitz would be going for the andrew mackie type flanker or wing role. mackie has that laconic movement aswell, and works ok as the link man, but certainly not a contested mid, would have to be more a flanker who links up through the middle or winger who roams unchecked.

i think that those skills would need to be developed in the vfl though, as i believe you should only be promoted to a position in the AFL side after consistent performance at that role in the VFL, which is why at times this year i felt varcoe, thunt, caddy, smedts and stringer were all lucky to get senior games.

Hahahaha. Nice try. That would be why I phrased it in a form of a question. If you don't believe it, simply say "no".

See above. Open your mind. Try to see him as something other than a ruckman.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, steady on there. I said he would be in a variety of roles, including on the wing...

As I've said ad nauseum and indeed even in the post you quoted, the match committee have had numerous chances to give him a game and they haven't. That to me says more than VFL match report written by an AFL staff writer. I hope he turns a corner in the match committees eyes but I can't see that happening any time soon.

Paraphrasing...it all ends in tears. j/k

That does mean you see him as a capable wingman though? Don't disagree. That is when his skills improve and on bigger grounds where there is plenty of space for him to deploy his aerobic ability.

Remains to be seen. I think he'll be tried in that role and his natural running ability should be a good starting point.
