When Ziebell went out through suspension, it allowed Cunnington to accept more responsibility and become a better player. Ziebell coming back did not affect Cunnington. He at that time finally knew what he could do and never looked back.

I think Swallow going out had a similar influence on a few players as a group. It has fast tracked their confidence. He will be returning to a much better side around him, and will make us even better as a unit.

I was taken out back & shot when I tried to find a silver lining & suggest that Swallow's injury could be the making of a few players.

It was fifteen minutes after the achilles snapped, so I guess I can understand if some people may have seen my comments as 'too soon'.

I was also watching the pies game today (1st half) and watching spitta's 1 percenters was something else.
He is just manic in his attack on player and footy.

The three (cunners, spitta and jack) can play in the same side but all three need to play other positions.

I have never seen a side burn the ball as much as we did in that game.

I'm expecting Cunners and Jz to rest forward to great effect this year. Both 20+ goals and also increase their TOG

So solid across all points of the ground now.

A more diversified centre square line up is something I've been keen to see for a while. It seems that while effective we always have a combination of Cunners, JZ, Swallow and Wells. Those players often run from the bench straight into a ball up.

Geelong and Hawthorn run a bunch of players through there and bring out the big guns when the time calls for it - they're fresher and it works as the opposition aren't seeing the same thing all the time. I'd like to see us change it up every now and then.

Dal Santo, Wells, Swallow, Harvey, Ziebell, Cunnington, Bastinac, Atley, McDonald, McKenzie & Garner should be more than enough. With plenty of depth options should we be hit by injury.

The midfield is not the issue.

Absolute agree with everything you wrote though and we should be able to implement this from now on.

Watch the game against Adelaide in Adelaide!

Don't forget the 3rd quarter in game 2 against Hawthorn, has to be up there!

The thing that might affect our starting 22 more than anything is where everyone is at in terms of recuperations and fitness. Even though we may have a consensus on say 16 locks for the starting 22, there have been a few in the pink bibs who may not be cherry ripe come round 1. We can say for certain that Spitta, Daw, and Curran are in the LTI category and their availability for selection would be from May or thereabouts. But from what I have picked up from the vids and training reports, the following guys have had interrupted pre-seasons: Mullett, Thompson, Wright, Adams, Tarrant, Grima, Hine, Delaney, Brown. Anyone I have missed? And any of them who are unlikely starters in the NAB challenge (mentioned that Adams won't be right until last game)?

NMFC site has a good piece on this.

I'd like to see us start our first game with something like this:

B: Hansen – Tippett - McMahon
HB: Wilkins – Thompson - Macmillan
C: McDonald – Ziebell - Gibson
HF: Garner – Wood - Harper
F: Nahas – Petrie - Black
R: Currie – Cunnington - Atley
Int: Dumont – Jacobs – McKenzie – Greenwood – Wright - McGenniss
Sub: Bastinac – Goldstein

and go into our last pre-season game with something like this:

B: Hansen – Grima - McMahon
HB: McDonald – Thompson - Mullett
C: Macmillan – Ziebell - Gibson
HF: Adams – Tarrant - Harvey
F: Thomas – Petrie - Black
R: Goldstein – Cunnington - Wells
Int: Dal Santo – Atley – Bastinac – McKenzie – Jacobs - Harper
Sub: Garner - Wright

You would think that they will take a bit of time to ease Adams, Mullett, Delaney, Grima, Taz and Hine back into things but I reckon they will be looking to get them on field at some stage. I wouldn't be surprised to see Delaney not play until the VFL kicks off though, purely because of the necessity to get game time into Grima upon his return and the inclusion of Tippett who should get a run early due to Delaney and Grima injuries.

Interesting approach BTron, using the first game effectively to trial a lot of the boys. I would guess this will be spread through the first 2 games with the 3rd like you suggest, a warmup for the Round 1 squad. All the guys bolded would effectively see this as the start of their season so we might find some quite competitive footy from all of them. It is not unusual for round 1 selection to include players who have lit up the NAB Cup.

I certainly see game one and two as an opportunity to get the young guys who have been performing well on the track into game conditions. I would think that only Dumont and perhaps Wilkins would be physically challenged at this level, but if they are fit and working hard then they should be given a snifter early considering those unavailable.

And yep, a gradual transition to best available 22 by the last game for preparation for round 1. Gotta hit the ground running.

I like your thinking BT. How good would it be to see a Dumont, Tippett, Wood, Garner, McKenzie or Two Dogs feature heavily in a big win over the Blues to kick things off?

.

Maybe slot in Wallace to have a run in the ruck.

Maj's arm could fit two of Firrito's! lol
And Firrito ain't Turner.

He seriously needs to go Barry Hall the next chance he gets in the 1's. Hell if I was that size I'd be throwing my weight around the local Coles. Frozen section wouldn't even worry me anymore. Angry Maj = worried opposition

Just saw dal post on instagram that he enjoyed the hit out today and Currie was best on kicking 8. Anyone in melbourne catch any of the game? Surely Currie will push to be playing seniors this year but can he and Goldy be in the same team? If they do you'd have to think Tarrant would make way
