Bit out of left field and I am only going to use Merrett as an example - I want him at the club next year. But if Brisbane were to trade Merrett could they use the trade to effectively sell cap space. For Example if he was on say $400K next year, could they trade him to a perspective buyer for a better than expected pick, but leave $350K on Brisbane's cap (the other team would physically make the payment)? Would the other club be in breach for paying outside the cap?

I don't think so because I believe that's what we did with fevola, gave them more so they would pay a portion of his salary

Wow that is an interesting idea. Trading a player and bumping up his value by paying his full salary. I wonder what that is worth to a Sydney or Hawthorn in terms of the Merrett trade.

Not sure, but I wouldn't think the lions would want to pay the whole salary anyway. Might annoy some of the big boys over at afl house, considering we just asked them for $3 million so we could pay 100% of the cap

What I suggest is slightly different to the Fev situation, in that case the seller (Carlton) would have actually paid the cash, what I am saying is that the buyer pays the cash, but it comes out of the sellers cap. The more I think about it the more I believe it would get knocked back by the AFL. As an aside, if you could straight out trade cap space, what would it be worth. ie pick 1 $1mill, pick 5 $500K etc. If it was allowed, would the lions consider it?

Totally agree, compensation for free agents should be just that compensation, not a reflection of value. They should be awarded an end of 1st round pick and if the player lost is of significant value ie. franklin or ablett then a second end of 1st round pick should be given, so as not to affect the rebuilding clubs and all other teams.

I wouldnt be totally unhappy with a mid first round pick (So you pick before all the finals teams do if the player warrants it). This just feels like another priority pick disaster which can set a club up for a long time (eg Franklin / Roughhead) and will only be around to benefit a very few clubs before they realise it is too much of a gift.

Related Caro article - http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/power-joins-suitors-for-key-bomber-20140915-10hczn.html

Lions' ruckman Matthew Leuenberger, also managed by Connors, could become a player in the potential Ryder trade. Brisbane has already stated it would not give up a first-round pick for the Bomber. The Lions are understood to have unofficially put forward a four-year contract offer worth at least $2.5million. Ryder is midway through a four-year agreement with Essendon.

Caro is putting her money on Brissy right now, a decision to be made probs in the next 48 hours. Port still a strong chance though.

Will be a huuuuge get for us especially after most Bombers fans say he was close to thier best player and was unlucky to miss out on AA squad. Imagine how well our rucks would be able to work around the ground and they will effectively be another two midfielders out there for us.

Just remember that of you have two rucks playing mid roles that's two less actual mids. Having a ruck who can add a bit to your mid group is great but they're no replacement for an actual midfielder

I would normally agree. But Stef might argue that point with you. 2x 32 possie games in the last 3 games. Machine.

Yeah I didn't really word it properly. What I meant was that they don't play like the typical ruckman. Say Martin rucks he can compete well enough in the ruck but then destroy his opponent in the stoppages and around the ground effectively playing as another midfielder. I wouldn't have Martina and Ryder in the same centre square playing as perm midfielders with Berger rucking. Could see Martin play in bursts though which worked out okay considering it was his first time playing that role.

Unfortunately I think he is always going to be lost to us through injury.

Sad to see it going this way but you are right. We can't rely on Leuenberger to be our number 1 ruck anymore.

It would be great to see him get a good run with injuries but the club can't bank on this happening, it's too big of a risk.

Leuy offers more in terms of leadership on and off the field. He also adds to the culture we are trying to build. Trading Leuy for Ryder has no huge gains.

The main goal of trade week is to improve our best 22 and recruit players that meet our needs, which is a gun midfielder or key forward.

In terms of recruiting a gun midfielder it's very difficult trying to convince other clubs to give up A grade talent. Maybe the club should target highly skilled midfield talent that will be A graders like Luke Shuey, Tom Mitchell, Jack Trengove, Dylan Sheil etc.

Getting a key forward is difficult and the club is better off going to the draft, but I do like what I have seen from Ben Brown during this finals series, in terms of getting a mature body to support our young forwards to develop.

personally i think we don't need Ryder ( nice get but not a must get) beams is too hard and really a pipe dream !

throw all eggs in one basket and go for danger from the crows ! i know he will cost a mint but gives us that big body in the packs and a triple A grader
