Yeah you probably should. Do you have any examples that have actually happened though? Sydney would probably just trade him for a ~2nd rounder instead of that scenario IMO. The 'Tyson deal' is a rare beast. It only happended because GWS were set on Kelly and knew 100% they could get him with pick 2.

Oh ffs... forget second rounders, the whole point is using a proven player to get a small bump in the mid first round, then on-trade the pick to satisfy another club's demands.

Also, just so we're clear, your whole stance is basically: "I've never seen a deal that fits your exact parameters, so it can't happen ever, and I want to argue about it!"

That's some rock-solid logic, and a brilliant use of your spare time. And I'm a moron for even replying to you.

Calm mate, what you're trying to prove simply doesn't happen often. The trade with Melbourne and GWS was pretty rare

Didn't Geelong trade up from 14 to 10 last year with Adelaide? Draft picks only I think.
They were top 4 going into finals but finished 5th after going out in straight sets.

A few years ago trading was basically non-existent. I suspect we have not seen anything yet now that future picks can be included. Will be more common than now.

If you back your scouting department draft board and know that a player you like will be there, trading makes some sense. Whether you trade up for someone you think will be a gun (Geelong took Cockatoo but would have had their eye on a few) or trade back knowing that good players will be there (Adelaide got Lever I think, plus better draft spots in later rounds.

[QUOTE="KnaveyBlue, Craig Bird has been in and out of the Swans line up this year, but is a proven solid player. Do you think if the Swans packaged him and 17 in exchange for pick 15, that any club in their right mind would say no?[/QUOTE]

In this new world of draft picks being worth points, particularly to clubs wanting to exercise rights to academy and F/S players, the above scenario is highly likely.

Sydney's first pick plus others will be needed to secure the highly rated Callum Mills. Craig Bird is a very good player but given Sydney's midfield depth he may want a trade.

What is Bird worth in a year when the draft is shallow. Lets say pick 35 to a needy team. Pick 35 is worth 522 points which Sydney can use to pay for Mills.

So if the deal for Bird was a pick upgrade, it would need to advance them by at least 522 points. They finish runner up with pick 17 worth 1025 points. For that pick upgrade to be the same as pick 35's 522 points, you would need to upgrade pick 17 (1025+522) to pick 8 worth 1547. More likely that the team wanting Bird hands over pick 35. The net effect is the same for Sydney, both ways the points get burned getting Mills.

That's the beauty of being a strong club, you have a lot of players that are perfectly capable but can't break into the team. So you simply shed one to a mid-table team in return for a first round pick upgrade, then on-trade the pick for another gun.
You make sound so simple.
Does a strong club want an inconsistent player who runs one way though?

One year left on his contract.
What will Carlton fans be happy to give up for him?
You guys are giving him over 300k a year to play NEAFL. Given you need to trim your list, he's a good person to offload and save some cash. I don't think you'd be asking for overs for Jed.

We don't have to trim our list beside the usual 3 de-listings.
Jed isn't what you'd call a marquee signing you could build a club around.
If SOS wanted him at Carlton the question remains what would Carlton fans like to pay for him?
I'm nowhere near delusional enough to think it'll be a first rounder.

I think you may be just a tad delusional. Pick 21 in 2010 didn't play a game until 2013 for the Swans where he only played 12 games and has only played 10 games in almost two seasons at the Giants. At best you'd be getting a second round pick or a pick and a guy on the outer like an Ellard or Graham - albeit Graham has played a few games this season.

Do you know the meaning of the word delusional?

Sydney traded Shane Biggs last year for a pick upgrade (Biggs & 39 for pick 37).

Only cause you would pick him up in ND if we didnt deal, he had sights set there, nothing we could do.

Swans wanted to keep him.
No doubt - but regardless of circumstances, it does happen from time to time.
We also traded Lake out for a pick upgrade (27 to 21) and a late pick sweetener. Pick upgrades for players are not uncommon.

300-350k probably.

Yeh thought, so.

I recall when he was playing like 2013 Jack Watts earlier in season and got dropped Roos said that he may be better elsewhere, but has improved out of sight since.

His skills are great, would be interested, but IMO is exactly the player the Dees should be ensuring they keep. Swanswill have Bird to offer but not much else so doubt he will move to swans but interested in dees fans whether they still want him goooone.

Think he said he would be a better player if he was drafted elsewhere, Roos has always rated Watts pretty highly.

'2013' Watts is a bit of hyperbole - Watts has played patches of good footy every year for the past few years, he always gets criticized for some poor early season form then plays good footy for about half the year (2011, 12, 13, 14 and now this year).

It seems every year people act like it's the first good footy he's ever played.

The key for him is having a consistent season from the start - they seem to be significantly improving the basics (contested ball and tackling) which should help that, in past years he's relied on his smarts and skills to play good footy hopefully he can start to rely on the basics (not that he'll ever be a contested ball beast) and then use those attributes to have a great impact for us.
