Think he said he would be a better player if he was drafted elsewhere, Roos has always rated Watts pretty highly.

'2013' Watts is a bit of hyperbole - Watts has played patches of good footy every year for the past few years, he always gets criticized for some poor early season form then plays good footy for about half the year (2011, 12, 13, 14 and now this year).

It seems every year people act like it's the first good footy he's ever played.

The key for him is having a consistent season from the start - they seem to be significantly improving the basics (contested ball and tackling) which should help that, in past years he's relied on his smarts and skills to play good footy hopefully he can start to rely on the basics (not that he'll ever be a contested ball beast) and then use those attributes to have a great impact for us.
Fair enough re: hyperbole- but its the longest he has played without a game with terrible effort... is that fair enough?

Also thoughts re: will he be traded?

Possibly fair enough - I can't remember specific instances from years back, but once he gets some form his effort tends to be pretty consistent.

It's when he's out of form and is getting pressure from all angles that he goes into his shell and hesitates.

Won't be traded - possibly if it's an offer too good to refuse, ie involved in getting us a really good player.

But why would a team trade a very good player so that they can gain Jack watts?

What does that have to do with anything?

It would obviously only be 'part' of a deal - it may not even be to the same club (ie. when we almost traded Trenners to Richmond last year).

Watts won't be traded and I highly doubt that he would want to go now that we're on the right track. He loves the club and his teammates, if he was ever going to go it would have been when he negotiated his last contract.

Not going to happen

I'm glad he's coming good for you blokes.

A shame he was burdened with so much so young. Never met him but always seems like a bloke you'd want to have a few drinks with.

Part of his problems as an AFL player have been because you are not alone.

He's not called Jacky Potts for no reason.

Not a Watts bash...just an acknowledgement.

Does love a froth - but so did Jonno Brown, only becomes an issue if you're form isn't what people expect.

Yeah, as i said, not a Watts bash....just an acknowledgement that preparation and dedication hasn't been one of his strong suits. Brown was an aerobic beast whose hard training and onfield intensity overcame some off field frothy love...Jack, not so much.

I agree and have a lot of respect for Watts because of that.

It would have been much easier at times to walk away, but he chose to stay & try to repay the faith.

I hope he does.

What? Up and down form with the odd good game? Kick a bag 1 game not get a kick another?
His development would've been better at a "stronger" club. His poor games and up and down form would've been less.

If my Aunty had balls type of scenario.

Be that as it may, I'd swap Treloar for Watts and Melbournes first

Yarran a much better player than Watts would like to see him reach his full potential which club would suit him best?

Yarran omitted from the Carlton team. Worth a first rounder ;)

realistically prooving non Carlton supporters correct, 2nd rounder at best

Think other guns have been omitted from their clubs at times for similar reasons. You could be right.

Though, we just don't trade him this year unless it's a win for us.

That's what Carlton do best, wait for a players trade value to bottom out and then move them on only for them to play well for their new team! Eg: Garlett

Agree. You could get band 2 next year. Band 3 at worst but I think more likely band 2.

So unless the pick is near that (20-25) I'd just keep him.
