Maybe you're right, maybe I'm completely wrong. I just don't think you trade out blokes that have been so great for your club. And a club captain...

Why not? In order to move forward it's the logical thing to do. You've got to think with your head not with your heart. I just told you the Hawks gave up Croad and McPharlin to get pick #1, #20 and #36 which they used for Hodge (#1) and Mitchell (#36).

The illogical thing to do is give a 4 year +1 year deal to a former pick #2 who is injury plagued when the team was clearly declining.

The time to shop around our best players over 26 years is now. Murph needs to stay though, you do still need leadership and to set an example for the young players coming in. I think trading our Captain away would be a bad message for not only the players we have now, but for the future players we get as well.

We are losing enough players as it is, we can't trade out all of our high end talent.

We finished last. Other than Cripps and Murphy, who we won't be trading, who is high end talent that we are trading excluding Henderson and Yarran who couldn't care less about our club. Their year proved that.

Yes, it did but past Murphy and Gibbs we don't have much in the way of high end talent amongst the more experienced players. In my opinion we need them both there at the moment.

Give the captaincy to Simmo and trade Murphy if the right deal comes along.

I don't care about the positive endorsements flowing in relation to Murphy's year this year. In all honesty, it was well past the due date for him to stand up as a captain. Gibbs stood up last year with a phenomenal season and then this year it was a sharp decline.

Murphy probably has 4 years left in him. He won't be there when we are pushing for a flag.

The point I was trying to make was that the club backed themselves into a corner over Murphy/Gibbs. On the one hand we're rebuilding and no one is off the table. Next month Marc and Bryce hold a press conference to say that 'not going anywhere'. i.e. you can fix the list by whatever means necessary but us two are staying. If the right deal came along I'd consider it but even if they wanted to, their hands are now tied.
They committed to the club even though they knew we are going to be ordinary for a while.
Ordinary like your posts.
The easy path would be to leave a join a top team but they committed to us.
Pity some supporters don't committ to the players that committ to the club. Can we trade you.

You're probably right, you're ALL probably right. Perhaps I'm not the right person to be having this discussion. I coach my own side and I get attached to blokes who give everything they have for their team, even if their best isn't quite at the level. For me, guys like Casbolt and Bell try their guts out week in week out. I have a soft spot for bloke like that and I hate to lose them... But I bow to more pragmatic heads, I just hope you guys end up being right...

It's not particularly useful to use Hodge and Mitchell as examples... while the first round pick might have a decent chance of being successful, Pick 36 is a failure more often than not... So using it to justify your argument is pointless.

Hawthorn were lucky. No-one thought Mitchell would turn into the player he has... If they had, he'd have gone Top 10. To crystalise that point... how did that pick 20 work out for the Hawks?

Pretty sure Daniel Elstone is not a household name...

Drafting is one part skill, one part guesswork and two parts luck... sometimes you need to choose the bird in the hand.

And I don't even really rate Gibbs.

How about you show a little respect! We support the club.

.....and whooosh, that is that.

And pray tell, what would be the best deal for the Club Captain...............some 18 year old on a million a year for 8 years???

Gibbs high end talent hasn't been much on display for the past 9 years.

Well, i don't know but he looked pretty good in 2014 and he knocked back the opportunity to go to Adelaide last year probably on bigger money than he signed with us on.

Marc or Bryce; which one are you?

I support the draft approach. If we can accumulate a collection of good high draft picks, then we are setting up what should be a solid platform to build from.

It's never gonna happen, but in a fantasy gladly swap Gibbs and Menzel for Taylor Walker (probably would have to throw a second or third rounder to)

Big Texaco is everything you'd want in a captain that Murphy sadly isn't.

Gibbs has been injured for most of the year.
Great way to show Carlton loyalty by trading our captain. That will attract plenty of good players to our club and make it heaps easy for our current players to be loyal to us when the club isn't loyal to the committed ones.
Joke.

Really annoying reading posts here ..3/4 of the nupties here jump up and down as soon as a player is disloyal and wants out of the place,,but as soon as they see a perceived benefit in trading out contracted players its ok for the club to be disloyal. so I put it to you which one is it?

I think murphy stays - don't see any chance in him being traded. I think we need to identify which players will stay around for the rebuild, despite the fact they probably won't play in our next premiership. We need strong leaders to set the standard to the younger players, otherwise we risk becoming melbourne.

i think the players that show leadership and will stay (i.e. riewoldts, montagnas, sam fisher, dumpsters etc.)
- Marc murphy, Kruezer, simpson, jamison, curnow, tuohy, andrew walker and lesser extent white and armfield. these blokes will probably retire as carlton players

players who could (and will) be traded for the right price:
Henderson, yarran, bell, casboult, daisy, gibbs (only because his value is so high), menzel

considering we want to stagger the rebuild, to ensure we get a continual influx of talent, and remain slightly competitive

2015 trade - hendo, yaz, bell, cas to kick off the rebuild
2016 trade - one of gibbs, menzel or daisy if the price is right
2017 trade - trade one of the above if still of value

that way we have at least 3 top 20-25 picks each year. Will be tough, but we need to bring in talent.

What you don't like a captain that puts his body on the line week in week out. Why do you even barrack for Carlton.

What the heck, let him turn up late for training, or go on a bender...........that's how you get out of Carlton.

Fantastic culture but.

Ummmmm, I don't see players lining up to join our side on the proviso of 'loyalty'. The concept of loyalty in this game died a long time ago.

I don't want players coming to our side on a free-ride basis so they can score themselves a 6 figure salary over 3 or so years with mediocre output. That is pure exploitation, and Carlton should not be stupid enough to proceed down such a path.

We want to attract players because we have sound internal processes, a sound management structure, and a professional culture.
