Delaney unfortunately is decent back up but not up to it.

I think it's unfair that you make a comment like "he's not the messiah", again I don't think anyone said he was this.

I think anyone who saw him play footy in his 2nd and 3rd year would agree that he was showing the type of potential to become a very strong key defender as he developed.

He development has somewhat stagnated. He's been caught up in a terrible situation and due to a lack of forwards and an influx of defenders, has been thrown around a lot.

He is a clear, clear upgrade on Delaney (who couldn't get a game toward the back end of the year) and someone we can rely on for 6-7 year.

He's a good player as we sit. He has the potential to be very good. He fits a need for our team moving forward. He fits our list profile.
Actually met Delaney in Southland today. I'm over in Melbourne this week. Went up, said hello, wished him well. Nothing else to report.

So we are clearly interested in Freeman and Carlisle. Do you know if we are interested in anyone else in particular?
Yep and I expect both to be in saints colours next season, as for other players, we have a wide interest in quite a few but we are still of the policy of targeting players that want out of their clubs, which is why guys like Weller and Kelly will most likely not occur this year, but in years to come. In saying this, we are already starting to get in the ears of players for next year

What are the chances of getting Aish?

Freeman for 2016 2nd will get done.

Pies and Saints will both have bigger fish to fry and will get that out of the way quick smart!

Like everybody here I am just super keen for us to land a big trade. The mere fact other clubs might want him, makes me want Carlisle more. However, we need to try and be objective about this. Does he justify the hype? Will he actually make us that much better? If we are going to pay Rance like dollars and potentially be willing to give up pick 5 we need to be confident in the following 2 questions:

1. If Carlisle plays down back will he regularly beat the best forwards in the competition?
2. Does he provide and rebound potential?

To answer 1, I am going to pick out the best forwards from the competition. Let's say we look at Walker, Cloke, Hawkins, Lynch, Cameron, Roughead, Hogan, Petrie, J.Riewoldt, Buddy, Kennedy & Stringer.

Of the above, I would say Carlisle is a good match up for Hawkins, Petrie, Cloke & possibly Lynch. To be honest he would struggle to break even against Roughead, Walker, Riewoldt, Hogan & Kennedy because they have good tanks and are too quick off the mark. I personally believe he would regularly get torched by Stringer, Buddy & Cameron as they are just far too agile, and have way too many tricks at ground level for a player like Carlisle.

Therefore, Carlisle probably struggles to beat the competitions best 50% of the time. This is in stark contrast to a Rance who has the agility and speed to match it with all of the above players on a regular basis.

On point 2, will Carlisle provide run and/or rebound potential? Carlisle is a fantastic mark, therefore has the potential to provide a decent amount of rebound purely through his intercept marking. This is maybe the 1 area he is a better player than a defender such as Rance. Where Rance gets him again is his ability to provide some run and overlap. You get zero from Carlisle on this front.

Overall, Carlisle is a long way from Rance's level. I use Rance as a benchmark purely because that is the sort of coin we seem to be offering. I know we want to land a big fish, but I honestly don't believe Carlisle is going to make us significantly better. Would much prefer a fast agile defender than Carlisle, there are just too many bad match ups for him in the backline for us to justify throwing the kitchen sink at him. We also have Goddard who is very similar.

If we get him for a second rounder + player then cool, let's go for it. Any more than that and it is just not worth it IMO.

His best he was like Brian Lake, long armed spoiler with an aggressive edge and good closing speed. I have a concern that he and Goddard are too similar in bulk and we might be better with a Sam Fisher/ josh Gibson clone.

Looks like some people need to learn a bit about negotiation IMO.

Freeman: Pies will want too much. We will want to give up as little as possible DUH. we will start with our 3rd or worse and if it gets down to the wire, we may give up our 2nd to get it done... but only if we have to and only if we rate him that much. The odds are in a our favour, but it doesn't mean the filth will try one, nor does it mean we won't.

Same goes for Carlisle. What we think is fair compo is based on how much we value him. I'd trust the club to not do anything stupid.

On a different matter...

Looks like we are targeting talented kids that we can get for cheap and without paying overs.

As far as the Pelchen plan goes... he's gone now and it isn't set in concrete. If the opportunity presents itself to grab a Carlisle, you do it now and lock him in. If we can fast track the rebuild then why wouldn't we?

All this talk about letting him go and going for such and such next year is delusional at best and fanciful at worst. There are absolutely no guarantees on who will be available next year or if they want to come to us. Players coming out of contract could easily be re-signed by their club.

Just have a look at Brown and Buddy as examples.

There's an old saying the luck occurs when opportunity meets preparedness... or words to that effect.

We've done the hard yards and prepped our cap... when the opportunities arise, then BOOM.. we get lucky.

Frankly don't give a rat's who he compares to. If he can hold down FB or CHB for the next 10 years and provide good spoiling/marking and kicking then he's worth it.

People carry on like every player we get has to be a super star.

Cats got Rhys because they needed a ruck / fwd. Is he a gun? No, but he fills a need. So does JC.

People need to relax here. If people want to share information then let them. At the end of the day if you want to make up info it will be pretty obvious very quickly.

Alas freeman had a fitness test the other day and was impressive. This will get done.

Carlisle returning from overseas, should have an answer shortly but again we are aggressive in the media. Also we have spoken to Essendon already, you generally don't talk to clubs unless the player is happy to come....

Yes joop is legit we were keen on Sloane and even got Lenny on board. Don't know how much further then that it went but I'm sure at one time he enjoyed the romantic idea of playing for his childhood team

For now everyone needs to relax, trade week is around the corner. Hopefully we get to watch a classic on Saturday because I think this board needs something other than trades to talk about
