That's right folks. I'm going there already.

Based off this article, the Lions had to pre-pay $1.4m this year just to reach the 95% salary cap minimum.

...which means we've still got a crapload of cap to snag another A-grader or even two next year.

So who / what position are we going to target?

For me the primary target would have to be Tex Walker who's a free agent next year. He seems fairly well embedded, but from all reports their new coach is pretty intense, and Tex seems to be pretty laconic...so who knows?!

Dream big folks! We've got a CEO who's done gone brought the #swagger back!

Footnote: For the record, here's the relevant bit from that article:

The new total player payment rules will also allow Brisbane to pitch for another high-priced star at the end of next year, having recruited Dayne Beams and Allen Christensen this off-season.

Under the rules set out earlier this year, clubs can spent up to 105 per cent of their salary cap in any given season, provided they have "underspent" in any of the previous two years.

Clubs that underspent by, for instance, $500,000 on total player payments and additional service agreements this year are permitted to spend up to $500,00 over the combined limits across 2016 and 2017.

The "banking" rule was backdated for two years, allowing Port Adelaide to recruit Ryder on a lucrative four-year deal given the club had underspent in 2013 due to cash flow reasons.

Port Adelaide also struggled to make minimum payments in 2012, when the club finished 14th.

Brisbane's situation is slightly different to that of the Power, given the Lions needed to pre-pay $1.4 million dollars this year to reach 95 per cent of its cap.

The retirement of Jonathan Brown gave the club extra money to spend this year, and the new rule will leave it well-positioned to go after another star or two at the end of next season.

It wouldn't be a stupid move, Walker is a good pick up and gives us a bit of depth.. does anyone know what's going on with Paine? Carlton may yet pick up Schache.

And if that happens, we pick up Weitering. I'd be comfortable with either.

It wouldn't be a great move..
Carlton will take Weitering and we will take Schache and then remember Close, Walker, Paine and Archie as backup tall fwds already

Yep I remember. Close will be returning from injury, Paine hasn't been able to get on the paddock and do we know when his contract is up? Walker isn't and hasn't been a household name and not really the number 1 forward. Archie is still a work in progress. So taking all that into account it aint a stupid move considering that we'd get him for nothing.

Interesting to read Swann's comments in the Herald Sun on Friday 23/10/15 saying that if they had of known a couple of months out that Leuys compo pick would have been where it ended up they would have kept him. Also in today's Herald Sun it states that the club was led to believed that Aish was going to re-sign with the club only a couple of days before he requested to being traded to the pies. Article said that Leppa was left in no doubt that Aish would recommit after speaking with him a fortnight ago. Aish was given a new contract to sign on the 8/10/15 and we were stunned to find him still wanting to go to the pies.

Apologies if someone has already mentioned this.

Yeah then he leaves in 2 years because of Prickering.

Schache does seem to have less of that go-home factor, given that he's already stated that it would be "cool" to be drafted by the Lions and the fact that his late father played for them.

I remember a recent article on the AFL website where he said it would be a bit of a dream come true to go the Lions. I thought shit this kids easily pleased. :p

Are people seriously still doing the "what if Carlton take Schache?" thing.

Geez some peeps just love to have something to worry about. Just chill ffs.

Yeah I rekon that's also why we went cold on casbolt, not that it would have meant they take Shaq, just may have increased the chances.

Yeah, but what if they do pick Schache?

Nah, it was taken from part of an answer on picking a forward on the cheap, ie the possibility of picking up Sam Grimely, (back to back VFL Frosty winner). As good as Schache or Weitering may be, they wont play every game in their first season. Do we Know if Paine has a contract in 2016 and is Berwick still looking for a better contract elsewhere?

Finishing second last has really turned out to be a bit of a blessing. I'm assuming we would've gone for Schache anyway due to our needs which would have provided the media another angle to have a crack at us over. Brisbane passes on best player in the draft bla bla bla and so on.

On another note, I know much will hinge on where Keays & Hipwood are bid on by other clubs, but what other academy players do you all think we will try to list. Williams & Chol are players mentioned quite a bit obviously, it will be interesting to see how the points work out on draft night.

Given Collingwood was talking pick 5 + Aish, would it really have been a win to keep 25 instead of getting 26 + the Saints' 2016 second rounder?

Yeah agree we ended up getting a better deal this year. However, would have saved the club the year of speculation, aish would have left on far better terms (now rates a total douche) and us the whole 400 pages of aish/Simpsons thread.

If we sign Grimley, it has to be because we think he can hold down a spot in the ruck, where we arguably need more cover. It doesn't make sense to sign him as a forward.

Predominately as a forward in the role that Leuey had this year, 2nd ruck. He's played forward/ruck at Box Hill, lacked opportunity of making it on to the seniors McEvoy and Ceglar are ahead of him. He's 24, 199cm and 96kg

It is the "predominantly as a forward" that makes me wonder why we'd bother. Walker fills the same need and we've got lots of young options vying for game time.

I have heard Hawthorn people say that Grimley could do well in the ruck if he got fitter and lifted his work rate.

Which contradicts what Hawthorn wanted him to do. Grimley started his career as a ruckman and developed into a goalkicker at VFL level and has done what was required by him winning the Frosty Miller medal. I'm not convinced Walker does fill the Leuey role, I had him penned as more a Staker or McGuane replacement. Grimley would offer better return than Paine an has a connection to the club.

If Schache requests to leave after 2 years I will have given up hope.:cry:

Leuey played as a forward who rucked a bit in 2015. That's pretty much what Walker does. In terms of role, Walker is a better fit. We saw last season that Leuey just couldn't get it right as a forward.

So if Walker will likely play the forward/ruck relief role, then the gap we need to fill is for someone who, if Martin and West go down, can play as the first ruck. Unless Archie comes on suddenly, we don't have anyone who can do that.

You mention Paine. If he's still contracted, it is a moot point. If he's not, I don't think we need to replace him given we've now got a fair bit of quantity in the taller forward roles.

I'm just not seeing any need for Grimley except as an insurance ruck, a role for which he may not be suited.
