Hawthorn could lose premiership defender Matthew Suckling for nothing should he take up a lucrative offer to join Brisbane at the end of the season.

The Lions would prefer for Suckling to join the club through the pre-season draft, rather than as a free agent, to protect their position in the national draft.

The club does not want to enter the free agency market, given that to bring Suckling or another player in would mean missing out on compensation should ruckman Matthew Leuenberger depart.

Under free agency rules, clubs are compensated for departing free agents only if they finish with a net loss of players.

While Suckling remains a priority target for Brisbane, it is understood the Lions have withdrawn from discussions about at least two other free agents.

Suckling, who is considering his options, is one of only a few Hawthorn players yet to be re-contracted for 2016.

The 26-year-old has been offered a four-year deal, believed to averaging about $400,000 per season, to move to Brisbane.

As an unrestricted free agent Suckling would be able to move to the Lions without the interference of Hawthorn, who would be unable to match the offer.

However, joining the Lions via the draft would mean the Hawks would receive no compensation for his departure, possibly missing out on an end-of-first-round selection.

The two clubs could also negotiate a trade, though the Lions would not want to give up a valuable pick with the pre-season draft option available to them.

Leuenberger - a 27-year-old restricted free agent - is also contemplating his options after nine years in Brisbane.

Should he leave, the Lions' compensation would be determined by the AFL's "formula" and based on his age and the terms of his new deal.

Brisbane may increase its efforts to keep him at the club should the Stefan Martin request a move at the end of the season, but the Lions are confident the contracted Martin will stay.

Melbourne last year received a first-round selection - pick three overall - after James Frawley joined the Hawks under free agency rules.

Brisbane has said it will apply to the AFL for a priority pick in this year's draft, given its woeful run in recent seasons and significant number of player departures.

James Aish, a first-round pick in 2013, is likely to join the long list of Lion youngsters to request a trade after just two or three years at the club.

An end-of-first round priority pick would make it easier for the Lions to obtain Academy players Ben Keays and Eric Hipwood in this year's draft, under the new bidding system.

A compensation pick for Leuenberger would do the same, or give the club a shot at two top-three draftees if his new contract at another club is deemed big enough.

Both Lions Academy players - Hipwood an aggressive key position prospect and Keays a busy midfielder - are a strong chance to attract bids in the first round.

Hawthorn had four players on the free agency list at the start of the year but Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge agreed to contract extensions early in the season.

That left Suckling and Brendan Whitecross, who has played four senior games this year after returning from two knee reconstructions.

We've been absolutely molested by free agency.

I have a feeling Whitecross will leave this year. The ultimate clubman but I think the offers will be too good considering he has done his knee twice. If Bolton gets the Carlton job, Im tipping Whitecross is the first player he brings over to inject more leadership into the group.
Gold Coast also devoid of leadership could look to lure him home.
The other former Hawk coaches may look to bring him to add to their squads.

I hope we keep him cause as history has shown the year after their first year back is where they start hitting their stride. See Roughead, Achilles and Schoenmakers, Knee.

Agree with this. I'd love to see him stay for at least one more year, but if he was to go, I'm sure he'd be an asset for alot of other clubs, especially as you mentioned the clubs with former Hawthorn coaches. I reakon he'd be a good fit at the Dogs

We've been absolutely molested by free agency.

An element for the legitimization of F/A by the AFL, was it's being prefaced upon the Robin Hood principle:....Taking from the successful/rich & Giving to the poor/misbegotten scrap-heaper clubs....So it was thereby warranted as a worthy & justifiable equalization measure.

Unfortunately, we seem to be the only club on the end of all the F/A rogering.o_O

Just in regards to Jed and Billy

Is there a cut off date by which they have to have signed a new contract?

They might just be waiting for Lake and Hale to make decisions about their future before turning attention to the young duo

Would be pretty ordinary of Suckling to leave via the PSD so that we get nothing. We stuck by him early in his career when he was a pretty average rookie and then again after he did his knee. We helped him reach the premiership dream and maybe even twice.

I can accept him leaving for a much larger contract than we can offer but to leave in a manner that screws us over after what this club has given him would be poor form.

If Brisbane are keen to not hurt their own FA compo then hopefully they'll be open to some sort of trade scenario. If not including Aish then simply getting their 3rd rounder would be better than nothing. I would hope Suckling would push for that at least. It's not like that would be fair compo or market value anyway. More something we can use in other deals.

Maybe we let Suckers go through to the PSD as a good will gesture to arrange the arrival of Aish to Hawthorn for our first round draft pick??
We need to get a contested beast bro for our midfield. It will be real interesting thoe

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

On Footy Classified, Hutchy just went off on a tangent as to how the 'big' clubs are going to abuse free agency by getting over compensated when they lose a player.

He then brought a diagram up that showed the 6 biggest FA signings and their corresponding compensation, and the only 'big' club that lost a player (Hawthorn) was the only one that was massively UNDER compensated.

I understand they've got a job to do, but come on ... A little bit of objectivity would be nice.

he said we manipulate the system. the fat campaigner has seriously got butter running through his capillaries

So, the lions want suckers by offering 1.5m over 4 yrs but give up nothing? Maybe Golby?

They don't have to give up anything though. We should be compensated though.
For sure if the AFL were true to their formula - and didn't add in a disclaimer that said 'but the compensation formula is subject to change depending on what the commission feel like at the time' - we'd be getting a second round pick at worst...

Sylvia who was on a 3 year contract at less money was supposedly worth a second round pick.
