Again the AFL rewards the perpetual under performers in Carlton and Richmond by giving them the opening round.
I really have no issue with the Tigers v Blues opener, who else are you going to play? Remember this is still the VFL. Last year they moved this game to Round 2 because of the Cricket and it did not draw as big a crowd. I'm pretty sure Collingwood played Fremantle in the opener and it was a major flop.

Even as a Catholic, i'm of the belief it would have been great to have the Crows v North game at Eithad on (Good) Friday Night. If they can do it in the USA one of the most religious countries in the world, we can play sport here in secular Australia on Good Friday. The only compromise is that it needs to be at night, so all those who wish on attending a service at 3pm can. I think most Christians feel the same. Only a vocal minority making noise.

Flying to New York on the Monday before hand from Melbourne.

I might leave a bit earlier and stay in Melbourne on the Saturday and Sunday.

Yeah, find the Richmond/Carlton rivalry a little overplayed. It was big in the 60s and 70s, maybe even the 80s but now, not so much. First game of the new season should be a cracker and in the last how many years, the Blues/Tiges game has under delivered. I don't mind them thinking that they want to kick the season off with two Vic sides but at least pick sides that can both play football. Hawthorn V Richmond would have been a much better chance of a good game. I get the feeling Carlton will be worse next year than this year, so FFS AFL, if you want people to watch Friday Night Football, lets not see those Carlton there most games. If any team deserves the Sunday 4.40pm time slot, it is Carlton, they have become a parody of Fitzroy

It's an underwhelming R1, same opener and closer, no Good Friday Game (still), Swans at ANZ still (who wants go go there seriously) and crap fixtures for the non Vic teams. Especially ours, Easter Sat night, a lot of people will find it hard to make it due to Easter and in my case I've already booked for the F1 in Melb the week before!

Will be the last year Sydney will be forced to play at ANZ I believe. They haven't renewed the ANZ contract. The Thunder have moved to Spotless full time, and CA have returned T20I's to the SCG, so this time next year there will be no oval field tenants at the ground.

Why North again? I mean it doesn't bother me we're playing them but I don't understand how a team like us gets drawn the same round 1 opposition two years in a row.

AFL figures that this matchup will be "traditional" in 2017. o_O

Thank god for that. I went and saw Juventus play there last year, and left there thinking ANZ is the dump that everyone's made it out to be!

What's the breakdown of the double meetings with Top 6 sides etc?

Looks like we have a double meeting with the Roos. Not too bad as we typically play well and they aren't what you'd call a "daunting" prospect. That knocks out one of the double ups. Suspect we will play Freo twice this year which would be another.
