Should try living in QLD. I was shocked when I moved it. Its deeply engrained in all classes here. Absolutely shocking.
Yep, that's the first thing I noticed when I moved from Hobart to living in Brisbane a few years back. That, and the fact that they still didn't have recycling bins, and every second 4WD drive had hunting lights/pro-guns stickers all over them.

Seriously red-necked, like stepping back 30 years in time.
And they say Tassie is backwards...

Having lived in Queensland for 34 years, I can assure you it isn't all backward. We are fighting an uphill battle to change perceptions though as the state is the continued breeding ground for One Nation.

I've given up arguing the point.

I actually love Brisbane, and think its a far nicer place to live than Melbourne or Sydney. Weather is great, good universities, people are generally more polite and traffic is amazing compared to the big cities. Still, deeply engrained racism and the rednecks in the outer northern and south eastern suburbs are another world.

Also seems to me to be genuine enthusiasm as opposed to other years.

ALL of the new recruits looked a lot more comfortable in front of Camera and gave more than the usual "Yeah, Nah, I'm just happy to be picked up by an AFL club" type response. SPS certainly showed shyness but also courage in front of the Camera, pushing himself to elaborate on his answers instead of just giving the minimum. Kerr looked pretty relaxed, like he's been doing it for a while, and Macreadie looks like he's jumping out of his skin to get into it.

Polson was super impressive in the interview...is he really only 18??

Spoke with serious maturity and spoke clearly and confidently...easily the best out of new draftees...although the other guys were also really good.

A.S was taken with our second R.D pick. You are carrying on like it was a second round ND pick FFS.

Did you read my post or just go by the vibe?

What do you expect?

Oh right. You didn't read my post and want me to repeat it. Why would I do that?

I wont repeat my arguments which are different to yours.

Good idea. Rather than repeat your arguments it would be better to respond to mine. That is sort of how a discussion is meant to work. Of course you do have to read my post.

lets just say i dont agree with you and I dare say neither does SOS or BB.

Not agreeing with me is a GOOD thing. Then we can have a discussion about why you don't agree with me . . . . crickets?

IIRC was Captain at Haileybury (a private school in Melbourne)

Do you really think that I am going to agree with you just because you keep repeating the same ideas? We have different opinions mine just happens to be more right than yours (joking) Time to move on.

I did see the living arrangements rumour and wonder how that will play out.

Is it usual for clubs to have three completely new and very young players live together?

And I have to confess that the fact they are indigenous also made me wonder had that happened before?

Pretty sure FTR has just tried to post a similar question , just a little clumsily.

Maybe more a Matt Rendell moment than a Pauline Hanson.
It usually happens with 2nd year players rooming together, but we've not had a lot of interstate guys lately.

Pickett is in his 3rd year in the system, however, and both of the other boys have been through big moves in the last few years so it's really just a question of personalities.

Yep - have you ever tried to kill a fox with a stick?
I kill mine with kindness, but it takes about 10 years.*

* - so long as rabies isn't a thing in Australia, weirdly this is actually something you can do if you're prepared to be patient with domestication (and you actually give them other vaccinations, desex, etc).

Obviously the club wants the new players to settle in as quickly as possible.

It's not unusual for interstate boys to want to room together because they probably already know each other pretty well if they come from the same state, or through the same development programs, or have a culture affinity with each other.

I find the scream down of people as racist every bit as disturbing as the poor choice of words that are sometimes used.

How about providing some constructive feedback when a poster writes something that is inappropriate or boarderline, rather than going straight for the histrionics.

While I am all for a process, not all process'es are equal. MM tried to intsill a process, albeit a ridicilous one, and where did that get us?
You can claim to be building a better and swisher version of a CRT TV, and could legitemately be proud of yourself because you got it to work but umm, Cathode Ray Tubes are obselete.
A process needs to be effective and not neceserally just working.

You are right. it is why I specifically stated "The idea behind this is that wins will come if the process is right." (change of emphasis).

You are also right MM tried to instil his own processes. He needed to be given a chance to show they would work. They failed miserably in his first year as coach. They failed miserably in the first game against Port in his second year. They failed miserably up to midway through the second quarter against Richmond the following week. I joined the chicken little thread after that and didn't stop crowing until, as was inevitable, the sky did fall in.

By contrast I have loved every step that has been taken by SOS and BB on field and off . . . . up to picking AS. In the scheme of things it is a minor aberration (unless good reasons can be given for his recruitment) but it needs to be noted. We don't have to defend everything SOS and BB do to still love them round the place.

You claim there are good reasons, thus:

We absolutely need a hard bodied, blooded AFl backup to plug crirtical spots in case of injury. AS doesnt need to play out of his skin, but just play his role.

I am happy to accept for the sake of the argument that AS is a "hard bodied , blooded AFL backup who will plug critical spots in case of injury." I am happy to accept for the sake of the argument that AS will plug those spots beautifully, perhaps much better than the injured players he replaces.

I still don't see why we have recruited him. We are on a REBUILD. We have plenty of seasoned players on the list already that I don't think, for differing reasons, will be on the list long term - Rowe, White, Jaksch, Jones, Gorringe. I get the need to protect kids from being physically beat up but Plowman (5th season), Marchbank (3rd season) and W'ring (prodigy) are not really in that category. So have we recruited AS to protect JGM and Macreadie and Mckay? Give me a break.

I would hate to see our boys getting the shiete kicked out of them week in week out nek year beacuse we have a few injuries with our elder players.

So would I but what part of the phrase "Rebuild without taking short-cuts" do you not understand?

Its all well and easy to say kids will learn and improve with every single game they get but also equal to say they may get seriously scarred with any or multiple beltings. Its called self esteem.....or just plain ol human nature

I agree there is a risk that kids will get scarred by multiple beltings. IMO that risk is increased by imposing unrealistic expectations on kids that they "need to win". IMO the risk that we would suffer multiple beltings was bigger last season than it would have been in 2017 without AS.

Why? Because last year we started the recruiting of our KPPs who, after ruckmen, take the longest to develop AFL hardened bodies. We went alright.

As you rightly acknowledge the good thing about losing, particularly losing badly, is that players learn what they need to improve on in order to be part of a flag-winning AFL side.

Since AS has not been recruited to be part of a flag-winning team (at least no one - least of all you - has yet suggested it), all his presence in the side will do is limit games for youngsters who might and prevent that necessary learning to occur.

And maybe we are better off finding out early which of our kids is going to crumble when things get tough so we can dump and reset on the rebuild path. Not all of our picks, regrettably, are likely to be out and out successes.

Not backwards.......lol
From the state that won't bring in daylight savings because it will upset the farmers and fade the curtains.

How about that draft class of 2016? Look like a likely bunch.

It is hard comprehend the number of faces in/out of the club the last few years....

It reminds me of that time at the show when the Zipper was a new ride and it used to spin around like it was on speed.

Interesting article by George Megalogenis in this month's Monthly outlining three 'zones' in Australia. Definitely worth the read.

54.5% - 45.5% in the referendum. Doing those 744k voters a disservice. That was 24 years ago too. I'd imagine it would be closer now. Mind you Katter wants North Qld to become its own state.

There has been speculation for a while that Qld needs to bring in Daylight Savings so you fall into the same time zone as New South Wales, Victoria, ACT and Tasmania. Time for another vote I think.

Only the South East corner want it.

It's moments like this when true, well intentioned, loyal supporters and BF posters stick together and think of what's really important, the club........

What should we do?

Daylight saving is terrible. It wastes valuable time in the heat of the summer. No one gives a stuff about us farmers in the Yarra Valley

Good draft though......

Yeah we're more concerned about the wineries.......

Farktherest let it go and move on.

Thanks

Happy to...let's get the conversation back on track to what i originally meant to say..and i will try not to offend anyone.

Does anyone know who decides the living arrangements of new players? Is it purely the club or do players decide?

Barass70 mentioned Pickett, SPS & LeBoi are sharing a house together - I picked these 3 because i don't know any other draftees living arrangements.
They are all new to Carlton and new to Melbourne.

I would have thought it may be beneficial to have someone from Melbourne or a more established player in the house to show them the ropes?
But i guess the club feels those players will be able to motivate each other and form a close bond...with their similar cultural backgrounds maybe helping them to relate to each other.
