Stiffy_18 I won't quote your whole post, largely because you basically repeated everything I said, but you can't say "everything fell into place" with the Bulldogs. They had a disastrous year injury wise.

Go look at their drafting 2012-13 and see how well they nailed it, both with picks and rookies. Then they spent Sanders annual salary getting a young kpf and held the faith with him.

There was nothing lucky about their premiership.

Hi crows - this may have already been reported by someone but I have the following information on Lyons contract which you may find interesting.

Crows offered him $150k (not sure for how many years).
Gold Coast offered him $250k p.a. for 3 years.

My source is immediate family - very confident in its accuracy. I unfortunately have no more information then that!

If this is true we should have delisted Thompson and given an extra $100k to Lyons. Disgraceful.

We reported this weeks ago.

Surely not news

Sorry if it's already been reported.

Yeah interesting list management. Maybe the internal view isn't strong or they want to be loyal to players like Thompson and not do what the Hawks did?

Mate, there was a fair bit of luck there in the end. They had terrible run with injuries that is a fact. They limped into the finals. They were lucky that for the first time there was a bye before the start of the finals. What that did was allow them mend, regroup and give it one big crack. Week off benefitted Doggies arguably more than any other team. It also disadvantages top 4 teams because for winner of the first week you play 1 game in 3 weeks. Continuity is the key in finals and WB had it in September.

They absolutely nailed those drafts but they struggled all year long with key defenders and matching up with big forwards. They struggled for a key forward all season long but for that last month, it all clicked. Their key defender that went to Freo did the job with the help of others. Boyd all of a suddem started coming along, their midfield got to another level for that month where everyone was playing out of their skins. They had a fair bit of luck at the right time of the year to take it out. Yes they have a lot of young talent but looking at their team they are unbalanced but play really well as a team, defend well as a team and play with manic pressure. Again they played out of their skins in September and once you are there that is what you need to do.

Hawthorn did with Vickery what Geelong couldn't afford to do with Danger last year

Structure his FA contract too high to match

That's why Danger's trade was so poor, Geelong couldn't get him as a FA
Yet you criticise afc for a poor trade when you said we shouldn't match if required.

I'm surprised you are still speaking about this embarrassing contradiction... & even better throwing in a hawks masterstroke getting a dud like vickery for the similar $'s to jj... Yet you continue to lambast jj who massively outperforms vickery.

Just lols all round!

DangerSloane do you think Lyons is worth only $150k?

Amen to the bolded. This is exactly what is needed in finals, and we didn't do it. In fact, getting us to play this way is far more important to our success than the details of the players we trade/draft, IMO.

I agree about the bye disadvantaging Top 4 teams a little. But they had to beat a red hot West coast at Subi week 1 and that's no easy task

Sure it was no easy thanks but I would have thought it helped a fair bit that Nic Nat and Lycett did not play and Giles was always going to spud it up after playing like Shaun Rehn against Adelaide previous game.

Look they played out of their skins in the entire finals series and along the way had a bit of luck just like any other premier.

Every Premiership comes with luck. Look at how most other supporters look at 97 / 98 - all luck etc ....

Every premier sneaks through a game or two they could easily have lost - that's why you want to have more shots at the title.

The best team for the year does not always win the premiership, and that is how it has always been ... and I love it. It's one reason I love the finals series over the regular season championship setup, you have to perform in cut-throat games. With AFL not having anything like a fair / balanced / equal regular season - it is the only way it would work.

I'd give Barlow a two year contact at 250k. Cheap option that could pay off. We need midfield depth and he would be a better option than Thompson, Mackay or Douglas in the middle.
No thanks. Give CEY, Menz, even Gore if we have to the chance for a few games in a row. That way we know if they are up to it or not, and if not up to it ship them off. No more list cloggers!!

Nope. CEY isn't good enough, Menzel is a half forward with minimal wing capability. Gore will struggle to dominate sanfl next year let alone get a game. Lot of stretching with the players you listed here.
Players that contribute 22 games of good football aren't list cloggers and I'd put money on him having a better year than Douglas or Mackay. We need something to improve next year, organic growth won't get us into the top 4, that's why I was so pissed last week.

CEY is good enough. Walsh saw something in him, that's good enough for me. He may not be elite, but he's good enough to be playing afl regularly. I agree don't think Gore will make it , but unless he gets exposure in the afl we won't know. And if isn't good enough to make it we should cut our losses.

CEY isn't the level we need in there to compete with the best. Barlow is better next year whilst we look for someone else at the end of next year.
