It's a long season for the older / mature players .....they never play all the JLT series anyway

This is an 18 man squad .....IIRC only 10 are in the final squad ....7 on the pitch & 3 reserves (stand to be corrected)

Adelaide (18-man squad)
7. Jordan Gallucci, 8. Jake Kelly, 17. Curtly Hampton, 19. Jackson Edwards, 22. Andy Otten, 25. Kyle Cheney, 28. Cam Ellis-Yolmen, 31. Patrick Wilson, 34. Elliott Himmelberg, 35. Matthew Signorello, 37. Paul Hunter, 38. Harry Dear, 39. Tom Doedee, 40. Ben Davis, 42. Alex Keath, 43. Reilly O’Brien, 44. Lachie Murphy, 45. Ben Jarman

So the squad named v the final squad, tells us absolutely nothing, zero ....diddly squat
No Poholke?

I wouldn't be. It's probably fair to say that the 18 players named are the 18 bottom ranked players on our list (including rookies), excluding injuries (of course).

This means that Poholke is now inside the top-27 players at the club.

Okay, no offence Vader, but you seem waaaaay to caught up on this whole "where are players ranked by the club" notion

Everytime JLT team sheets etc are named, you starting ranking off players in a numerical list and taking that list as gospel around here. You do it every pre-season, and I understand the thinking behind it less and less every year. There are so many other external factors at play here that involve team selection, than just having a list from 1-100o_O

It also confirms that Hampton is nowhere near AFL selection in 2018.

It does absolutely nothing of the sort!!

Why are players like Gallucci/Keath/Kelly in that list, if you're going to use that line of thinking?

With the exception that a top 27 player may put up their hand to play. I don't think Rat has dropped out of the top 27.

Edit - no Rat, swear i read an article where he Seed and Dmac were lining up.

Really? As Vader pointed out, aside from the players being managed only 23 players haven't been named. Out of those 23 I think at least 19 will be in our round 1 side - surely you don't disagree with that!

There's a bit of both. The naming of so many defenders indicates that there's a competition for those positions. For the rest, it pretty much says that they're closer to the bottom of the pile than the top.

We've only named 3 players with 50+ AFL games - Otten (98), Cheney (77), and Hampton (60). We already know that Cheney is on a dead man walking contract. I'm betting that at least 2 of those 3 players will be gone at the end of the year. If you've played 50+ AFL games, and you've been named in an AFLX team, you know that your career is in deep, deep, trouble.

I reckon the only thing you can be certain of is that none of the players named are currently managing an injury issue. I'd suggest that anyone who has spent more than 20 minutes in the medical room in the last 2 weeks was not eligible for selection.

Was Cheney extended? Thought the fabled DMWC was only 1 year extensions.

Not true, it tells us their guernsey numbers.

I wouldn't read too much into that. It's an 18 man squad. We only have 45 players on the list, with Walker & Smith both unavailable, plus Fogarty & McPherson who "have had good pre-seasons, but at this point it’s probably not best for their preparation into the main season to play AFLX", bringing the pool down to 41.

What this means is that Gallucci is not in the top 23 (available) players. I can live with that.

On the other hand, it does mean that Poholke & Milera are now both rated ahead of Gallucci & Hampton.

Milera is absolutely rated above all of those listed, and that didn't require AFLx to confirm.

The interesting ones are Gallucci and Doedee, seeing both have near uncontested paths into the side, could equally mean we're trying to get in as much work as possible into their tanks before the season starts.

All in all, I doubt there is much to take from this.

It's the right idea, but too early to get a good feel of where people are at.

By the last JLT game we'll have a good idea where people sit our depth chart.

But that's all it is, it's literally just a "feel" of where people are at.

We have next to no idea of what the club are thinking or plan to do. Drawing conclusions from an 18 man AFLX squad is just so far-fetched. Even by the end of JLT I think people draw way too many conclusions.

There are some logical conclusions that can be drawn, like it's well known who is competing for what position and how they are rated by BnF results.

For instance, I would be incredibly surprised if Gallucci didn't start in Camerons spot come round 1 without injury, likewise Doedee in Levers. Equally I would be surprised if Hampton wasn't teetering on the dreaded dead man walking stage just due to who he is competing with, and how Greenwood ended up being what Hampton should have been for us.

Otten is an interesting selection. I'm not sure what to read into that if anything at all
The Crows probably want an experienced player or 2 to guide the younger players.

I'm probably not known as being much of an Otten fan, but I think we need to leave room for the idea that some players are keen for a gallop in a new game that's going to be reasonably open. They are footballers after all and as long as they're not managing an injury or risking making one worse, the coaches would probably oblige.

No Poholke?
They picked 18, only needed 10 ......can't pick every player ...there would be reasons based around their development / workload programs ....there's no conspiracy

There's simply no relevance between who's named in the AFLX squad ....and the Round 1 side

Has anyone ever referred back to a 'bookmarked' post?
Rarely ......i do Bookmark posts ....but rarely have i revisited, due to lost interest in the subject of the Bookmarked Post

Wrong!

It may surprise you that the AFL changed their minds and are now allowing clubs to play up to 18 players across the two/three matches. Most of the players named will have a run on Thursday.

IMHO the players selected are the only ones that returned from the Queensland Adventure. Has anyone actually seen any of our players in the last week?

There isn't but there is

Clearly not many of those named will play Round 1

Having said that the door is ajar and people can break through eg McGovern a couple years back

To me it looks like give the youth a run , guys that have missed opportunities through injury in past but are fit now ( Hampton , Otten) and guys competing for spots eg Doedee v Cheney V Kelly

You may want to refer my original post where i stated IIRC ? .....so b4 you try and point score, get your facts right .....i never stated as fact, and no-one corrected me, so i assumed no change by the AFL

Playing 18 players thru 7 on-field at any time .....just makes a mockery of the concept
