So there's a lot of push in the NRL to basically get rid of stadium consolidation and have everyone go back to their suburban grounds. St George just announced they're not playing games at ANZ next year, and this comes after Channel 9 pushed for more games at suburban grounds because it looks better on TV than the empty cavern that is ANZ stadium.

You have to wonder why the government is going to spend $1.6 billion on stadium upgrades at ANZ and the SFS when it doesn't even seem like anyone wants to play there. This direction may change again once it becomes more clear where that $1.6 billion is going, but from all appearances the NRL are giving up on growing their crowds and are going to focus entirely on TV audiences.
The Melbourne model was never going to work in Sydney, AFL is a religion in Victoria and all the AFL states, the only games Sydney RL fans are interested in attending are GFs and SOO.

It’s all fair and well the clubs or Nrl asking for tax payer funding for their surbaban grounds. but the clubs and league have hardly put any of their own money in to the facilities With their mini casino league clubs

The AFL model is the oddity in world sport.

probably says more about Melbourne(the city) and the MCG/Dome than passion. Melbourne is a lot better city, planning wise, than Sydney.

Melbourne is a better city period! It dosent get "most liveable city" accolades for nothing about the only thing going for Sydney is the close surf beaches.

It’s, pretty with not a lot of substance. Where Melbourne oozes substance and things to do that more than compensates the nice beach views

There's a saying: Sydney is the hot but vacuous supermodel you have a fling with and then move on from. Melbourne is the attractive, awesome woman you fall in love and settle down with.

I think what you mean to say Sydney is the Whore and Melbourne is the elegant lady who takes a bit of wooing but in the end has a lot more to offer!
Lets face it Sydney was built on 160,000 criminal dregs of British society whereas Melbourne had a total of only 1700 convicts.

Took my kids to Luna Park the other day, ended up taking a break and going for a stroll along the St Kilda prominade down to the pier, just an absolutely wonderful place, i actually lived there when i was a boy and forgot how incredible it was.

I love Sydney as well, great place to visit.

While we're on a Melbourne v Sydney theme, I've been tracking all the different national leagues for the last 12 months starting last October to see how the two cities stacked up. I wanted to be fair and only look at regular season games from competitions that both cities are involved in. So I've got data for AFL, NRL, Big Bash, A-League, Super Rugby and NBL games for each city. I'd love to include the Super Netball as well but I couldn't find figures apart from a couple of games. I am also missing a few NBL games (mainly from Sydney) and some Super Rugby games (mainly from Melbourne) for which no record seems to be available.

Overall, Melbourne ends up with virtually double the figures from Sydney, a whopping 2.5 million more attendances from slightly fewer games.

Looking at the averages, Melbourne was higher for AFL, NRL, BBL, NBL and international cricket, while Sydney was higher for A-League and Super Rugby.

The gap between Melbourne and Sydney is remarkable enough just on those figures, but this does not include finals and more significantly special events which only take place in one city. So while you would need to add State of Origin for Sydney, you would also need to add over 700k attendees at the Australian Open, 200-300k at the F1 Grand Prix and around 300k at the Spring Racing Carnival.

Sydney are doing great things with their 'Championships' racing carnival, been a long time coming too, too long, but a great step forward all the same.

I couldn't find any reliable figures for their big racing days. If I can, I'll start recording them alongside the Spring Carnival.

I don't know them either, but they'd be big, and getting bigger.
25,000 is a BIG crowd at the races is Sydney This new promotion will never rival the Spring carnival in Melbourne and it wont matter how much money they throw at it.
You cant buy tradition like the Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate
For starters there are 4 cruise ships coming to Melbourne just for the Cup let alone the tens of thousands of interstate and OS visitors.

Long odds though, might be worth a place bet at most.

9,089 for the opening match of the a-league season at AAMI park last night.

Yep it wasnt a good look for the opening of the season Now lets see how they go tonight as they only have a small window before the Tests and BBL kick in.Also will be interesting to see if the woeful TV ratings on SBS improve on CH10
Changing to summer by the A League instead of playing in traditional winter for football codes around the world reminds me of the saying "you can run but you cannot hide!"

It’s started already? Probably because there has been no Les Murray to build it up this year!

Usually there is a few reporters banging out “this will be the year sleeping giant awakens”
