Interestingly, the last time they opened the season in a docklands big blue after they played off in a gf they got 40k....

That game was the Harry Kewell v Brett Emerton debut game. The marketing and promotion behind it was nothing like I’ve seen before. Harry was even on AFL footy show promoting the match.

Ahhh, if it isn't old wagonbang.....specialist in announcing low afl crowds on this thread is back now making excuses for poor soccer crowds...funny that

I'm sure the a league will bounce back when the next wave of aging golden generation players return.

Anyway, channel ten have been pretty heavily promoting the a league on one so I'm sure it rated its socks off

Mediocre ratings for the A-League on its commercial TV debut.

Sat TV #ALeague #ONE #MVCvSFC 117k (Metro 84k Regional 43k) [yes there's an error here]

GF replay between its two biggest teams in the opening round with zero competition from other sports.

All those soccer fans who bagged SBS unrelentlessly (after all it has done for the game over decades) and believed there would be some magical big increase by going to a commercial network must be very sheepish this morning

Where was the excuse?

If you actually read what I originally wrote you would have seen that I called last nights crowd average. Not the worst not the best. But nah you only read what you want to see.

Plus aren’t you the king of trashing the A-League? I mean you slag me off for posting poor AFL crowds yet you do the same for other sports then a lovely statement to follow it and if anyone responds to it you slag them off. Only poor crowd I announced this year was the China game. Funny that! The game that sold out.

Surprising the A League opted for the 54,000 Etihad when the crowd would have been more suited to the 30,000 seat AAMI.The ratings are pretty ordinary for two of the biggest clubs.

Victory contracted to 5 at Etihad until 2024/25

Well, that's it then...you've found me out...I'm biased towards football over soccer on a football forum!

You posted several low crowds this year

117k including regionals...ouch!

True, so many forget that SBS pumped soccer for 30 years, almost exclusively, when no one else would touch it with a barge pole.

And now soccer fans are complaining about ads on One, after wanting to get away from SBS. Duh - that's what it means to be on commercial FTA!

Also, SBS represented a decent amount of taxpayer money being pumped into the A-League for four years (way, way, way above market value).

They were also, rightly or wrongly, expecting 35,000 which would have justified playing it at Etihad purely from a crowd perspective.

Are we going to post the NBL FTA ratings or is this so-called AFL-only thread just a soccer bashing ritual?

Pathetic.

Funnily enough it rated about the same as it did on SBS.

This idea that commercial FTA was some sort if magic bullet that was going to get 300k nationally was predictably nonsense.

And before people blame it being on a multichannel, all BBL games in Perth are on One and routinely get larger audiences than 84k (the 5 city average). Just in Perth.

10 really need to get it on their main channel for the a league to take off. Putting it on One they are assigning it to mediocre ratings.

The A-League ratings would improve a fair bit if they did that but Ten are a commercial business not there to lose any more money for their shareholders. Even SBS with its outstanding history of support for the game relegated it to the second division.

Would it rate more than what it replaced? 10 will only put it on the main channel if it's good for 10. If it's good for the A league, but bad for 10, it isn't happening.

Programs appear to lose about a third of their audience when moved to a multichannel. So you'd expect last night's 84k to be about 120 to 130k if it was on 10. Still about a third of what it would need to rate to be worth it for the network to do that.

Thats the bottom line 10 cannot afford to bleed ratings they are already at rock bottom for a FTA network

Wow didn't realise it was that long. Was it signed before AAMI park was built?
Original one was. That experied couple seasons back. They resigned a new contract just before last season to take them up to the original AFL take over date.

But South and West Australians have the same passion for AFL.
Yes, but they only have 2 teams and a different evolution path. Correct me if I am wrong, but WAFL and SANFL clubs don't normally share stadiums. I have never been to Adelaide or Perth so know nothing about its layout.

Anyway, My (basic) point is that you can clearly tell the difference between the layout of Sydney(a mess along the coast/inland) to Melbourne(a hub which just expands in all directions). And that hub is perfect for the process which happened for the AFL/Melbourne and why, perhaps, it doesn't work as well in Sydney.

Edit: i will make this point regarding average attendances between Sydney/Melbourne

I personally don't care for code wars but considering people are so keen to bash soccer, NBL got 15k on SBS2 yesterday and not a word...
There some bashers around, and I can't speak for them, but they might have long memories and remember CEO David Gallop mouthing off about being Number 1. A quick google search has revealed the following:

Football Federation Australia chief David Gallop says his code has surpassed cricket in popularity

We will be No.1 code, declares soccer boss

Looks to me like he's had his ass handed to him.

In life and sport be careful what you predict and those predictions by Gallop and Lowy are way off the mark.
