Caught a bit of the Bulldogs Dockers game and i thought the standard was better than the Carlton collingwood game.

Crowds have been unbelievable really.

Is it a matter of no footy ATM, womens footy starting, bit bored with what else is on, games are free.

TBH i reckon they are much rougher, with plenty of high contact and late hits than football i have seen for years.
Agree with most of your views.

The WB v Freo was a good standard, good kicks hitting targets, good link up play. Probably more goals should have been kicked, the goals were peppered.
Again, very fierce tackling in these games -caused by lots of flooding & congestion.

Not sure about your high hits comment -umpires are red hot on this. But with so many numbers around the ball, often umpires vision is restricted.

Interesting question that we will eventually know the answer of. The moment AFLW comes up against any other footy - it could fail dramatically. Or, AFLW could actually have traction, a massive flood of supporters, and a lot of potential. Personally, I think when it does come up against other footy, and the new toy phases wears off, that AFLW will be found wanting.

Haven't cross checked the fixtures but do any go up directly against men's fixtures?

I think if it goes the community based way it will succeed, personally cant see it going for as long a season as the AFL though or crossing over in a big way.

Read this today and it makes plenty of sense.

This is something the AFL through ground rationalisation has destroyed.

Sure you get a community feel around some Richmond pubs before a game but it misses around Collingwood, Carlton, North, Footscray etc where businesses and locals all spent some money found a bit of local pride and got out and socialised and created a bit of a buzz and atmosphere.

Think it will be interesting to see the crowd and TV ratings for the JLT series.
Not sure ratings will be high but wouldn't surprise me if there was some decent crowds. Collingwood v Essendon especially should pull in a few

oh and just for a laugh that Adelaide game at 114k FTA and 73k Fox would have beaten
  • AFL 2016 R23 - Port Adelaide v Gold Coast, Sat N, 91k (adel), 68k (fox)
As a Fox game it beat
  • AFL 2016, R19 - Brisbane v Port, SAT N, 72,000
  • AFL 2016, R18 - Gold Coast v Fremantle, Sat A, 57,000

How much flexibility is there is the broadcasting contract for this league? Is there the possibility for channel 7 to add to their one game a week if demand remains high?

The fact that the games are all freely available online and that Adelaide were seemingly randomly able to air their match against GWS shows to me that Foxtel wouldn't lose much financial viability by doing so. Also that they didn't pay anything for the rights might to me suggest that they may not have signed such a restricting contract.

If possible, I could definitely see channel 7, even paying fox for their stream, broadcasting an additional couple of matches. They absolutely smashed ratings in Melbourne on Friday night for the cost of a few commentators and cameras, and would probably get a good deal of PR and backpatting for promoting the league beyond what anyone thought.

Is it too ridiculous to suggest that someone line Channel 10 might put some dosh in buy the rights to AFLW and try and continue live sport coverage after the BBL finishes?

Start the season two weeks earlier, play the games Saturday/Sunday afternoon Round 1+2 so it doesn't clash with Aus Open prime-time broadcasts, then have a proper McIntyre finals system going for the top 4.

Not at all. I think the AFL took the right approach in using the existing broadcast partners for the first two seasons (I think) but beyond that they should put this out for open tender for which channel 10 would be a perfect fit. I suspect, like the Big Bash, the economics of it might be more favourable to an FTA than STV. I think it will expand in to the season proper though (I don't think you can push back in to January). They'll need to identify some prime time slots not occupied by the AFL when it expands in to the season (eg most Thursday nights, Sunday nights, Most saturday arvos for FTA)

I think it is very ambitious, personally i have nothing against women's sport, but i would rather see a Darwin mens comp in the off season.

I really hope it works, but it will struggle up against the men's and the last thing we want is for it to go the way of the Women's soccer and be played (seemingly ) for equality's sake.

How can a full season be integrated into the calendar ?.

Well you can watch that on their youtube whenever you like.

I am very happy AFLW has been a success so far, i love footy, my daughter played here in Perth for a WAFL club at one stage and knows plenty of the girls, i also helped out, but i also a think a League like AFLNT is a league blessed with skills and personalities and should also get a run in the sun down South.

What i will say and i hope people don't take it the wrong way, but i know a coach of one the women's WAFL teams and he said you need the diplomacy skills of Kofi Annan to run a women's team!.

It's early days, but I am optimistic about the staying power of the AFLW.

I notice the Friday night game, based on Melbourne and Adelaide figures only, ranked 9th nationally, which is excellent, but even better is that it was number 1 in the younger demos (16-39 and 18-49). I think the younger generations -- especially kids -- will take to the new competition pretty easily.

The club component also seems to be a plus in terms of care factor, which has the potential to grow over time as some history is built and more clubs join. For many supporters, if their clubs start playing more games a year, they are likely to watch, and this is basically what is happening here.

Playing standards will continue to improve dramatically because of the extra resources now going into development. The impact on grassroots participation and interest in the game is likely to be beneficial.

A big factor for ratings and crowds is the entertainment value. This is more subjective. Speaking personally, I do find it entertaining.

Also, TV increasingly needs live content, and the AFLW (like all sport) helps to meet that demand.

What stops you currently from watching the live streams of the NTFL?

In all fairness, they're peak figures, not average.

Not that anyone expects the numbers of Friday night to be maintained.

How accurate are TV ratings anyway? I never pay too much notice to them. Isn't there only like 2,000 people who even own those boxes?
