How accurate are TV ratings anyway? I never pay too much notice to them. Isn't there only like 2,000 people who even own those boxes?
Yeah I've often wondered this considering myself or no one I know has a box or ever been surveyed.
Would the Foxtel boxes be able to record viewers habits and preferences?

OzTAM TV ratings are audience estimates based on actual viewing behaviour in more than 3,500 panel homes in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth and more than 1,413 homes nationally for subscription television (expanding to 5,250 and 2,120 homes, respectively, in 2017).

The Regional TAM panel currently comprises a total of 2135 homes (Queensland 535, Northern NSW 475, Southern NSW 380, Victoria 435, Tasmania 190 and Regional West Australia 120) representing a potential audience of 7,750,000 individuals. Regional TAM announced on the 20 July 2016 that a 50% panel expansion would be undertaken, taking the panel to 3,200 homes for a further contract term through to the end of 2020.

You would think with technology these days and most Foxtel subscribers having their box linked to the net that Foxtel would be able to read the data from most boxes similar to how internet providers etc can see what web pages you look at

They describe 2.6 million minutes as staggering, and it might be, I actually don't know, but it would be nice to have a point of reference.

How significant is 2.6 million minutes in this medium?

For example, an average TV audience of 900k translates to something like 90 million minutes. Different medium, different viewing habits, etc, etc - but the question remains, in this brave new world, how significant is 2.6 million minutes?

Last years most streamed games of AFL and NRL -
  • Carlton V Geelong (2.14 million minutes watched / averaging 43.1 mins per unique audience member)
  • Storm v Cowboys (1.8million minutes watched/ 35.9 mins per unique audience member)
Id have liked to know how many concurrent streams there were.

I presume that 10,100 is Whitten Oval capacity? Otherwise they're giving us a rounded figure one week and an exact one the next? (obviously there is a minute chance that 10,100 could have been the official attendance, but I remember seeing a post on the stats board that figures ending in 00 are extremely rare).

I was a bit sceptical last week as to whether some crowd figures were slightly inflated just to tick over the 50,000 aggregate crowd mark.

Either that or I'm just a stats nerd :)

I didn't go to the first match at the WO but I did go to the second. With free entry, there was no method of counting those who were attending so the figure of 7669 was merely an estimate no matter how precise it seems. Having said that, from my long term experience of attending matches at the WO, I reckon it was a very good estimate. I suspect all the crowd figures given at all venues are estimates and not exact figures.

At the first game (at Princes) there was someone standing at the gate clicking as people entered

Yeah, all things considered thought it would be double that. Perhaps the women's comp has sated the usual level of interest in the men's pre-season comp?

Having said that, Pay-TV ratings are clearly up on corresponding match last year.

I thought similarly...what were the ratings?

Underwhelming crowd I would have thought.
Thursday night and a practice match hurts as does some of the miscommunications from the club. When you tell people it's free entry for members in one sentence but then tell them it's best if they pay a booking fee to guarantee a seat then naturally there will be some fans who will stay home thinking they will have to pay.
Collingwood fans hate Etihad also so I didn't expect a huge amount of their fans to show up in any case
