Do people in this thread that are suggesting Southport should become the Gold Coast's reserves side realise that was tried by the Brisbane Bears in the late 80s/early 90s? The Sharks were extremely dominant back then (far more so than now) but it didn't really help the Bears at all. I know there were other factors at play back then but what makes people think it would work this time around?

If anything, I think it would detract high quality local players from playing footy on the GC because their only option would be to play in the QAFL where the pay is smaller and the standard is lower. IMO that would hurt development of footballers on the Gold Coast. I think the current system is working just fine.

Is that right? My recollection is that the Bears players were farmed out across all QAFL teams. My club Windsor Zillmere had both Williams brothers and Frank Dunnell amongst others allocated to them. Choco was a regular down at O’Callaghan Park.

Gold Coast Suns and Southport are separate clubs. They are only linked because the Sharks are a corporate sponsor of the Suns and the Suns use the Shatks social facilities from time to time. .
Surely the vehicle for the development of the Suns lower list players is its own reserve team . NEAFL was set up specifically as a competition to provide a higher standard of football for the 4 Northern AFL clubs.
Southport has the means to provide its own team to compete at that level - it just needs to change its shift in focus.
The recruitment of Steve Daniel as coach is a good first step given his NEAFL record with the Suns. Recruiting recently delisted AFL players is also a plus. I'm thinking they will also target young Academy trained Suns that miss out on being drafted - Straight away 3 benifits given by the Suns. Some good interstate recruiting would improve them further.
I can think of a couple of NEAFL teams that may go before Southport will...
But.... NEAFL in its rawest form is Sydney,GWS , Brisbane and Suns reserves teams.

Southport is not an AFL club - they have no AFL License !
With respect - like the Melbourne media - its pretty obvious you know nothing about AFL football structures in Queensland .
No AFL player contracted to the Suns would accept being coached by Southport staff -they play for an AFL team - the Suns. No Academy player would accept being coached by Southport staff while they have a chance to be drafted to an AFL team (Suns).
I have no problem with Southport - only with your uneducated position..

I think if they are being rookied, have to be the rookie draft? Not 100% though

We have such a young team that having a couple of mature agers on the rookie list is sensible.
Also need to keep the pressure on spots and make our younger players earn a game.

Dont think swallow will come into the rookie list as he still has a vontract with north so if requesting them to delist hom i expect he would want a spot on main list

I think at this stage he probably would just want to play consistent senior footy.

If he forgoes his contract at North it then just becomes an issue about what we're prepared to pay and he's losing the difference

And unless something changes drastically injury wise I can see Swallow D getting game time

Yeah I'm all for playing the kids but if we don't learn the lessons from 2011-13 by sheltering them for a bit and managing their load the cycle will just repeat.

Might have already been mentioned but if we do draft ASwallow as a rookie, if the rules haven’t changed, only half his $$$ are assigned in the salary cap.

Might be able to fit a few more mature players in this way.
