List Mgmt. 2017 GC Draft/Trade Thread/FA - National Draft Pick 19

If we don’t land Swallow I would be disappointed. I like to think he brings mentoring to younger minds, would lead by example! He would give his all in his final years to play with his brother and it would cement David into our club for life I imagine. If we pass on him it would leave a bitter taste for him and the family I am sure of it. Get it done Suns!

Yeah I'm all for playing the kids but if we don't learn the lessons from 2011-13 by sheltering them for a bit and managing their load the cycle will just repeat.
I'm not sure where I stand on this subject.
GWS played their gun kids early and it wasn't an issue.
Ours are all 2nd year plus now and if they're good enough, they can play.

From the phantom draft. Haven't seen too much of Fogarty besides some highlight videos, but can't really argue with the points laid out here.

A little small, but a great tackler.

Pick 19 - Gold Coast - Lachlan Fogarty

When I look at Gold Coast, I see a midfield which has some solid, hard-working inside mids in Jarryd Lyons, Touk Miller and, when fit and firing, David Swallow. I also see a wide range of classy outside mids such as Lachie Weller, Jack Martin, Aaron Hall and Brayden Fiorini. This is without mentioning those who are still to come into their own, the likes of Will Brodie, Jack Bowes, and potentially Ainsworth and Scrimshaw. What I think GC are missing is a true inside/outside mid who can add class with good ball use and a great athletic profile, but can also add a lot of toughness on the inside. Fogarty is the one guy on the board who can add this.

Firstly, Fogarty has class. He has the agility and speed required to weave through traffic and break away from stoppages, something that I believe GC now lack. This can be helpful on the outside or when shifted forward, too. His disposal is very neat. He can sometimes rush kicks when running at full tilt, but this won't be something which sees him not succeed. Overall, Fogarty makes the right decisions by both hand and foot, which is what you want from an inside/outside type. Tackling is a major strength, too. His ability to impact defensively was shown through his 9.7 tackles per game in the TAC Cup, and 9.3 per game in the champs. These are elite numbers that couldn't be matched by any of the other top prospects. One thing about Fogarty that I really liked this year is that he not only bumped up his disposal count even further to make him one of the best accumulators in the TAC, but he also had a higher K:H ratio. His willingness to take the game on is something I really value in a midfielder, and Fogarty has it in spades, now. He knows when to stand up and make an impact both defensively and offensively.

Weakness with Fogarty? Other than his size, I don't really see many. He's as well rounded as you could hope for. Maybe his marking could be worked on a little, but considering the size factor, this is expected.

Who else? The other one I considered here was Zac Bailey. IMO a very similar type to Jack Steven, Bailey also has that willingness to take the game on and impact both offensively and defensively that Fogarty has. L Fog's higher accumulation got him over the line for me, though.

Andrew Swallow has retired after 220 games with North Melbourne

FORMER North Melbourne captain Andrew Swallow has retired despite having a year remaining on his contract after missing out on a desired move to Gold Coast.

Swallow, 30, said during last month's trade period he would "love" to join the Suns and play alongside younger brother David, but Gold Coast elected not to take the midfielder during the first delisted free agency period, which closed on Wednesday.

And with the Suns unwilling to commit to taking the West Australian as a rookie ahead of Thursday's 2pm second list lodgement deadline, he has chosen to retire.

Once agein I’m disappointed in the actions of the great Mark Evans. He who cannot be scrutinised as everyone hopes he’s the messiah.
This should have happened.

I agree, unless there is a better option that we are looking at to fill that list spot. We should have jumped at Andrew. Time will tell I guess.

Well done Mark Evans and the list management team for passing on a 30 year old with a broken down body and putting the clubs future first. #PlayThekids

You must be incredibly disappointed in Evans for giving up pick 2 then for Weller when he could have walked away and had him in 12 months time plus pick 2 and two more first round draft picks.

Talk about throwing away a rolled Gold opportunity to have an abundance of elite young players.

This is what Happens when people fall in love, Evans stuffed things by falling in love with Weller and now we have a fan group that’s attached themselves to the Messiah Evans in a Scientology-David Miscavige manner.

Wait, how is this Mark Evans' fault?

It would have been nice to see Swallow come up here for a year for development purposes and add another senior head around the place, but he is well and truly past it on the field and using a senior list spot on him for 1 season doesn't seem overly worth it. It would have been awesome if North delisted him and we put him on the rookie list, which it seems like we were trying to do, but it wasn't to be. Oh well.

I sure hope they spin it to David Swallow that way or he could well be out the door next time his contract finishes.
