God i hope it all blows up in their face, preferably in shanghai with Kochie and Cochrane setting next to each other.

Suns have made great strides in NEAFL in the last two years following use of Academy players as top ups.
Prior top up players were scrounged from anywhere - Southport , QAFL clubs and even Brisbane affiliated clubs. All were next to useless placing a big load on the few listed players to carry our NEAFL team.
Now at least our players are all of one club in terms of working structures etc. As an example - It 's no coincidence Max Spencer appears drilled in whats required - he has afterall played 3 years of NEAFL at the Suns via the Academy.
The Suns will be even better at NEAFL this year with the expected less injuries.
Southport can also succeed if they get back to what they were . When I was a young player in WA I had teammates considering a Queenslad season playing for Southport - such was their reach and respect . With the best young Gold coasters in the Academy and listed players off limit maybe they need to look interstate as they used to do....

Great post. I don't think it really refutes the idea of the Sharks being the reserves side though. Having up to 22 Suns listed players at any one time playing for the Sharks, in addition to Academy players, would necessitate the Sharks needing to also field a team in the QAFL because the club would have 30 odd displaced players. Having 3 levels to play at would mean Academy players and Rookies would rotate between NEAFL and QAFL, with A-listed Rookies likely to be permanent fixtures in the NEAFL while Academy kids would play QAFL. Probably the best aspect would be that younger players could develop alongside state based players, which isn't to be under estimated because instead of continually being put into a side filled with injured and out of form players the Academy players in the NEAFL side would be selected on merit ahead of seasoned players.
While that doesn't sound like it is a great deal different to the current model, it would mean a lot more integration and bring the best results for all three competition sides.

Do people in this thread that are suggesting Southport should become the Gold Coast's reserves side realise that was tried by the Brisbane Bears in the late 80s/early 90s? The Sharks were extremely dominant back then (far more so than now) but it didn't really help the Bears at all. I know there were other factors at play back then but what makes people think it would work this time around?

If anything, I think it would detract high quality local players from playing footy on the GC because their only option would be to play in the QAFL where the pay is smaller and the standard is lower. IMO that would hurt development of footballers on the Gold Coast. I think the current system is working just fine.

I'm picking for you guys in our board's mock draft, but I'm relatively unfamiliar with the holes in your list. Is there any positions that you desperately need to stock up on? I'll probably pick specific players that I like (that's the fun part!) but if you need to load up on a certain position I'll try and work that in for the sake of (some semblance of) realism.

I’m one of those people
U make a good point
It’s just when the Suns reserves play the crowd is so sad and pathetic
We would need two neafl teams from the GC in order to collapse the Suns reserve team and make it work

So I’d like palm beach to have a neafl team as well as Southport and have half the list allocated to Palmy and the other half allocated to the Sharks

You have to think bigger picture. The NEAFL is not the kind of league that is going to pull big crowds, regardless of which team is competing. The AFL is where the money will be made and is 100% the Suns' priority from a crowd perspective. The reserves team purely exists for developmental purposes and that is extremely important for the Suns considering they run their own academy and have access to said players they are developing. Dissolving the reserves team would result in the Suns losing control of how their academy players are developed which could be disastrous.

I know you have a certain level of bias towards Palm Beach so I understand why you're saying that but I really think getting rid of the Suns reserves team would be a bad idea.

I don't think you've read my posts through all the way. I'm suggesting that Suns2 is a waste of resources and that the Sharks are better placed to take on the AFL listed players and Rookies and Talent Academy kids by playing in BOTH the NEAFL and QAFL. The Suns and Sharks are affiliates, but the NEAFL has them fielding 2 sides and playing them against each other. If Southport had a full list of its own players and then had to incorporate up 25 players (AFL list = 47, 22 not selected each week plus 3 emergencies) minus injured/suspended players, it would need to have a team playing NEAFL and a team playing QAFL for the competition levels to be high enough.

Forget about letting AFL listed players go to PBC, but I'd have no issues with half of the talent academy playing and zone rookies who come from there should be able to continue - even North GC VS South GC kids split between one and the other. At the end of the day, though, the Southport Sharks pay a high price to the Suns for zero reward as far as playing talent is concerned.

Yeah well said. It's not about crowds it's about developing these young players in an elite environment and as one big team where everyone can bye in to the same gameplay and team standards.

Gold Coast Suns and Southport are separate clubs. They are only linked because the Sharks are a corporate sponsor of the Suns and the Suns use the Shatks social facilities from time to time. .
Surely the vehicle for the development of the Suns lower list players is its own reserve team . NEAFL was set up specifically as a competition to provide a higher standard of football for the 4 Northern AFL clubs.
Southport has the means to provide its own team to compete at that level - it just needs to change its shift in focus.
The recruitment of Steve Daniel as coach is a good first step given his NEAFL record with the Suns. Recruiting recently delisted AFL players is also a plus. I'm thinking they will also target young Academy trained Suns that miss out on being drafted - Straight away 3 benifits given by the Suns. Some good interstate recruiting would improve them further.
I can think of a couple of NEAFL teams that may go before Southport will...
But.... NEAFL in its rawest form is Sydney,GWS , Brisbane and Suns reserves teams.

Don't understand the logistical issues that stop the reserves from playing as the curtain raiser to the firsts
Would be good to see the women in that slot sometimes too
The Suns reserves do play at metricon before the main games.
I attended 7 curtain raiser games this year at metricon

Ok
I think we've missed about 3 home games since inception and never seen the reserves team
Don't they start at like 11 am so theycan clear the stadium before the main match?

Yeah about 1.5 hours between matches because of ground clearing etc. We usually pop across to Emerald Lakes for a few refreshments before the main game....

Interested to know if you saw much of the academy kids for this year and if so have an opinion which of them may get a spot (main/rookie).

Obviously Crossley - main
Then main/rookie?

Dawson/Foster/Davidson/Simington, Nutting (and the northern boys who I dont know well but played at Broady and looked good).

Neafl game usually always starts 4 hours before the main game so it gives them 1 and a half hours max to patch up the ground and change advertising on the goal post and others stuff.

You do not have to exit the ground in between neafl and the main game as you have to scan your membership or paid ticket for the main game to get into the neafl game.

The only time I've had to exit the stadium in between games was this year when we hosted the AFLW grand final because it was a free event.
Had to scan my membership to get back in for the neafl game and main game after the woman games.

You don't have to leave the stadium in between neafl and the main ground.
After the neafl game I always go to the Suns members bar for a few drinks and the free food in between games

Thats true ..... Its become a habit with us I suppose - during NEAFLgames are seated away from our normal seats so we go over the road for a while...can also put on a bet or two to pass the time.

If Eric Hipwood is available, take him.

Otherwise, for mine:
Lochie O'Brien (for his running ability)
Constable (just in case he drops)
Oscar Allen as a running medium tall
Nathan Murphy as a running medium tall
