Overall I feel his management style is poor. You have listed a few things in which you say he has done well.

I wonder that the size of the AFL is what is driving momentum. You say he inherited the Essendon situation yet surely he has also inherited Good Friday as this has been an agenda item for at least 15 years. Womens Football I will concede he is driving , but this is also momentum driven.

And the Etihad Stadium deal was always approaching at some date. The buyout would have been discussed at Commission level anyway.

The reason I feel he has benefited from momentum is he continues to use that momentum to make decisions. The Brownlow was badly handled. Once Essendon was found guilty the decision was easy. That it took a further 13 months says a lot about Gil than anything

I have to repeat I don't like some things he is doing, But as a CEO he is doing his job, the business is growing,
He did inherit the Essendon saga as CEO, He did handle it poorly, the commission handle it poorly, The media handle it Poorly, The players handle it Poorly. It a major blight on his record one that some will not forget or forgive.
Good Friday is his baby alone Prior to him sitting in the chair the Commission and AFL had the view there will be no good Friday, he has swayed the commission to accept Good Friday, not doubt a few change to the Commission helped.
With Etihad oval, the AFL was due to take control in 2025, for 30mil. that 9 years too long for the tenants to attempt to survive, and by then unless the was an upgrade to the stadium it would be too old to revamp the area. now the are planning an upgrade and revamp and still giving the tenants a good deal.
Yes they are only a few items, But I could add the TV and Media deals, Social media focus,
But again as a CEO the game has increased in revenue, supporters, viewing audience, media hits, He has increased the popularity of the AFL even with the Essendon saga running in the background.
To me that a Competent CEO.

I'm in my yearly cycle of hating football right now. I've also stopped caring about cricket, so that's not good...

I'm already over the cricket season. I usually get sick of cricket the moment the test matches stop. I used to like the 50 over game back in the 90's when guys like Bevan we're playing but it doesn't hold my interest like it used to and 20/20 isn't even cricket.

Footy season can't come soon enough.

Hate him or disagree with him you cannot say that he not very bright far from it. Check out his history before you go too far along that line of thinking.
As for decision making why is it the CEO takes the blame for the bad ones but the AFL credit for the good ones. that to me points to a reasonable competent CEO. I am still stuck on the way he handled the Essendon situation even tho he did inherit that one.
But I would say Good Friday, Women's Comp, Buying out Etihad stadium and the plans around it, would be making a decision.
I have attempted to put the mistakes I believe the AFL has made in one column and the good points in another column and so far have been surprised.
In order to honestly judge a man we owe to ourselves to looks at all the points

He was in my year at school and I can confirm that he's not what you'd call particularly bright. Definitely a hard worker and studious, but that is not natural intelligence or good decision making ability, which is what I think Kane is referring to.

Of running a business? Yes. He's increasing profits, throwing everything at his expansion markets, burying PR crises, controlling the unions/staff, silencing media criticism, pushing his preferred brands and getting Government grants to pick up development costs.

Of running a sport? Nope.

That's an interesting list. Are you sure about the profit figures? Throwing cash at expansion markets isn't proven to be a successful strategy yet. Burying PR crises is not a positive, they came out of the Essendon saga looking corrupt. Have they controlled the player's union, that's still very much in the balance. They do control the media, as we do, with the accreditation system. Not sure about his brands, but sporting bodies have always benefitted from govt grants for development, it's nothing new and certainly not unique to Gil or the AFL.

Of course, your post may have been sarcasm that I've missed.

Boxing just doesn't work in an outdoor stadium like this. If we wan't these kind of events we're going to need a decent indoor venue.
Shopping list:
1 outdoor rectangular stadium, 30,000 capacity - $600m
1 indoor square stadium for boxing events - $250m
1 roof on Adelaide Oval: $100m
0 more taxes

Good use of tax $ by the sounds of it

The fight was only in SA because of Adelaide Oval, they put it there thinking the simple fact it was at Adelaide Oval would make it a sell out because Adelaide Oval has attracted big crowds to most events.

If it was going to be at a smaller stadium they would have just held it in Melbourne or Sydney.

Its ok...Jay paid for it.

That is why SA got it.

A bit of salt on the Port board over womans footy.

I liked the comment about last nights game being a perfect storm of circumstances in getting such a big crowd last night and lets see what happens over next three seasons.

It is exactly what Port are experiencing with the move to AO. A perfect storm of a little bit if onfield success and AO novelty factor in 2015 and the crowds have been dropping ever since.

The irony of that kind of post being on the Port board amused me.

Why didn't you quote my other points Geoffa? Didn't fit the narrative you wanted to pitch?

Sorry for the paywall, perhaps someone could post the first paragraph.

Basically Bonehead McDermott is at it again. He has Geelong finishing first on 18 wins. His rationale? 7 games at home, 5 at the G and 4 at Etihad. WTF??? No mention of opponents.

He then discounts the loss of AA Enright and Bartel with the inclusion of Tuohy and Aaron Black, you know the guy who couldn't get a game at North.

He also has West Coast on 8 wins and 15th.

Brisbane on 4 wins with Richmond.

He is a fair dinkum idiot, can we bring back Alex/Sam so he can have a melt that the only reason I'm critical because Bonehead criticises the Crows.

We have always known he is an idiot when he became a press writer.

Just goes to show just because you played means you know about footy. I'm not sure that Geelong play that well at Etihad - struggle a bit I think.

Geelong will be struggling to make the 8 - how is that for a prediction.

Cats supporters should be worried as the kiss of death.

Doubt west coast will drop 4/12 home games, let alone win none away.

Are the standards of the Advertiser/Sunday Mail that low that they don't realise he's an idiot?
