Overall I feel his management style is poor. You have listed a few things in which you say he has done well.
I wonder that the size of the AFL is what is driving momentum. You say he inherited the Essendon situation yet surely he has also inherited Good Friday as this has been an agenda item for at least 15 years. Womens Football I will concede he is driving , but this is also momentum driven.
And the Etihad Stadium deal was always approaching at some date. The buyout would have been discussed at Commission level anyway.
The reason I feel he has benefited from momentum is he continues to use that momentum to make decisions. The Brownlow was badly handled. Once Essendon was found guilty the decision was easy. That it took a further 13 months says a lot about Gil than anything
I have to repeat I don't like some things he is doing, But as a CEO he is doing his job, the business is growing,
He did inherit the Essendon saga as CEO, He did handle it poorly, the commission handle it poorly, The media handle it Poorly, The players handle it Poorly. It a major blight on his record one that some will not forget or forgive.
Good Friday is his baby alone Prior to him sitting in the chair the Commission and AFL had the view there will be no good Friday, he has swayed the commission to accept Good Friday, not doubt a few change to the Commission helped.
With Etihad oval, the AFL was due to take control in 2025, for 30mil. that 9 years too long for the tenants to attempt to survive, and by then unless the was an upgrade to the stadium it would be too old to revamp the area. now the are planning an upgrade and revamp and still giving the tenants a good deal.
Yes they are only a few items, But I could add the TV and Media deals, Social media focus,
But again as a CEO the game has increased in revenue, supporters, viewing audience, media hits, He has increased the popularity of the AFL even with the Essendon saga running in the background.
To me that a Competent CEO.
