IF he can play midfield, it may just work out. He is very clean below his knees and has a decent tank on him already and he does use his size quite well. He got Balta pissed off when he played on him and Balta went back trying to be Mr Tough and Allen was fine responding.
Adding this to his evident smarts, how dedicated he seems, and his superb agility, it is very far from being a tragic pick in my mind. I would be disappointed if we took someone like Lachy Fogarty ahead of Allen simply because he is more recognised as a mid.

To pre-empt the melt:

PRE DRAFT MEASUREMENTS
N.Fyfe - 187cm, 75kg
J.Watson - 190cm, 80kg
T.Walker - 190cm, 82kg
J.Riewoldt - 192cm, 85kg
N.Riewoldt - 193cm, 81kg
.....
O.Allen - 191cm, 83kg
to be fair you can't draft a player in hope of them having a growth spurt . At this point in time Allen's a tweener and needs minimum 4-5cm of growth to be a modern day KPF. If he was that most here would be happy with Allen.

I'm not going to suggest that Allen is a gun key forward in the making, but what I think is that we all get way too hung up on numbers when context is much more important.

For instance is the difference between Matthew Pavlich/Jarryd Roughead/Nick Riewoldt and Jack Darling as marking forwards really the 1-2cm that separates them or the fact that they are/were smart footballers who actually used their strength to create space before the ball arrives?

And do we have any indication that these measurements are standardised between clubs? Are they measured in boots or barefoot? Are they measured in the morning (when people are at their tallest) or in the afternoon (shortest)? Making a meaningful distinction between 191cm and 193cm without knowing is pointless.

And to play devil's advocate for Allen for a moment: if he does have a significant reach advantage (as he and others have suggested) then the point is moot anyway, because the significance of height in football is the ability to reach the ball, not to have the top of your head higher than your opponent (otherwise known as the Tom Swift conundrum).

I'm not overly keen on Allen, but if we do, I wouldn't go another tall this draft like Miller at 37 personally. I would go another mid at 37. And get a small forward later in the draft like Ryan or Sambono.
I admit I can't find a single piece of footage on Miller's gameplay, so nothing against him. I do rather like Kreuger, so I wouldn't mind him as our tall for the draft.

For me, I hope for something like:

13. Clark / Higgins / Constable
21. Bailey / O'Brien
27. Kelly
32. Worpel / Petruccelle
37. Kreuger / Miller

Ryan / Sambono
Well that assumes we play Allen as a kpf, which i don't think will be the case.

I reckon he's a good chance at transitioning as a midfielder at the next level. But that's more speculation.

The only thing I'll add tho, is drafting only mids has it's own problem with development. Mainly because not everyone can play midfield at East Perth and I don't think any of us want to see us draft mids only to play them off a flank in the reserves.

We're going to need a genuine KPF prospect on the development track sooner rather then later and I think Miller is not a bad gamble to take.

I really do wish we somehow kept that pick 50, would have come in handy.

Allen was just on 882.

Is studying business law and accounting (I don't know if there was a comma after business). Spoke pretty well and promoted himself a bit. Said he expected to go 10-15 on draft night and that he had spoken to all clubs.

Seems very keen to make the most of his AFL career.

Can't say I agree. Think Allen has more scope then waterman outside of the forward line.
Yes allen has more scope but hasnt produced in the middle yet either . Allen also doesnt play like a key forward either unlike brander who has the size and power in marking to play the Kennedy role .
If we took brander at 13 and allen was still available at 21 i would take him also .

So I can live with Allen at 13 and O'Brien at 21 but to then take Ling (a HBF) at 26 is a worry when Bailey is still available. Our number 1 need is inside midfield and this was ignored!

Building on the first 2 picks given by Twomey and Ablett, I would be ok with:-
13 Allen
21 O'Brien
26 Bailey
32 Moore
37 Houlahan or Worpel or Kelly for more midfield alternatively Miller as a tall

As I have stated, it will be the balance on the 5 picks that does it.

Interested on your thoughts on the two in bold. I'll be the first to admit that I don't see them live as I'm half a world away these days. it's very hard for me to cast judgements from here. However, I can't see anything about Moore that stands out as a midfield prospect. His draft profile appears very masten like in that he's not very big or contested or particularly quick but has great endurance. Am I missing something? Do you rate him higher than spargo, petruccelle and walker? Also how would you compare Ballard with houlahan or do you expect Ballard to be way out of our reach? (I guess most would expect this)

13. Allen
21. O'Brien
27. Kelly
32. Worpel
37. Miller

Would be happy with that.

That mix is very nice. The three mids here are all different, one an outside running machine with an elite left foot, an inside / outside mid who hits the scoreboard in Kelly and then Worpel.....an inside beast who has good pace and a balanced game just needs to improve his kicking.

A quality 3rd tall who can push up the ground and a forward / ruck who is mean, quick, agile and is a nice kick on goal.

Very nice balanced intake.

What is the eagles plan for 193cm Mathew Allen, I wonder?

Keep him for 1 more year and hope for the best. Then de-list him or hope he shows enough for a trade.
He's unlucky he's that awkward height.

You would take coffield with our first? Before who on my top 14 list? The reason some of them guys are ranked so low is because I either don't rate them at all (Hayes) or I don't think they fill a need as much as somebody else (even if they are technically rated better)

L fogarty, constable, Allen. Some others I would consider like bonar etc. nobody in your 6 though. I believe coffield is more likely to be a mid at afl level than Allen.

Comparing Fogarty with obrien is like comparing gaff with shuey. Obrien is outside. Fogarty is balanced and will be a gun
Fogarty is significantly smaller than Shuey, 4cm shorter but more importantly 13 kg lighter. Some doubt as to whether he could make an impact as an inside midfielder at AFL level with his size (like Masten). Shuey has a big size advantage on him.

He's unlucky he's had injuries. From his limited game time this year I believe he looked pretty good .

Hopefully he can Stay injury free this year and show us what he can do .

My point was the difference between the contested ability of L Fogarty and obrien is big. It's like trying to compare the contested ability of a gaff vs a shuey. I'm not comparing shuey with Fogarty in terms of weight
