Twomey and Mick Ablett took turns to pick. They noted they went on needs and their opinion and made it clear that it wasn't who they think clubs are interested in.

Our picks are highlighted.

Allen and obrien seem likely choices
Im hoping ballard, starvevich, spargo, bailey, kelly and miller are in the mix for the rest of our 2nd rounders

I actually think a three tall forward line of Waterman, Darling and Allen could be pretty effective.

I'd prefer Clark or Higgins at our first but could live with Allen for that reason.
Sounds like something freo would do . Lets mot make the same mistake and draft a genuine KPF and not third tall types or lumbering rucks playing forward

If WC are in control of the football and have time to direct their passes, medium/undersized forwards have a chance. When the pressure is on and WC need to bang it on the boot and get it going forward, a key position size player can make something out of nothing by taking a contested grab - something medium/undersized forwards would struggle to do unless, perhaps, left one-out, which isn't likely. This hack kicks occur more-so in finals when the pressure is on. Having a balance of talls, mediums and smalls covers the bases for marking, crumbing, locking the ball in the F50 and making it harder for the opposition to defend a variation of sizes and types of player.

I think there's room for two of Darling, Waterman and Allen as forwards; all three if Allen is a mid rotating off a HFF. Still need a 6'5+ FF in there somewhere.

Sounds like another Sheed moment where we have made our minds up already regardless of who might slide

If both of these guys think we will take Allen then it must be pretty well known.

Looking forward to the melts tbh

Did we? Did we want sheed no matter who slid? Basing this on what?

Also Allen may well be the one who we think is best available. It’s not like Dow will slide.

So I can live with Allen at 13 and O'Brien at 21 but to then take Ling (a HBF) at 26 is a worry when Bailey is still available. Our number 1 need is inside midfield and this was ignored!

Building on the first 2 picks given by Twomey and Ablett, I would be ok with:-
13 Allen
21 O'Brien
26 Bailey
32 Moore
37 Houlahan or Worpel or Kelly for more midfield alternatively Miller as a tall

As I have stated, it will be the balance on the 5 picks that does it.

I'd be happy with this but if Higgins or Clark was available at 13 I wouldn't.
Higgins looks good but he projects as mainly a small forward plenty of them in the second round.if he is best available then go for it but if its a close call go the other options

Based on the fact we traded down because we knew who we wanted at 6 would be available at 11.

He may very well be the one who we think is best available, there seems to be a high degree of consensus in the media that our recruitment team consider him so.

It will be interesting to see who Twomey has us taking next week as his phantom is usually very close to the real thing and he has insights others do not have. Not sure he really knows the Eagles list when he and Ablett did their mock.

Allen at 13 - where there is smoke there is fire so we may well have our sights set on him at 13. IF he can play midfield, it may just work out. He is very clean below his knees and has a decent tank on him already and he does use his size quite well. He got Balta pissed off when he played on him and Balta went back trying to be Mr Tough and Allen was fine responding.

We are tipped to be into O'Brien and L Fogarty - both would be good at 21. Neither are worth reaching at 13 in my mind. While an inside mid is high on our needs, we can use 26 and 32 for that need.

This Starcevich continuous link to us is starting to worry me. If he was from any other state, we would not be thinking about him at all. Smacks of old boys clubs because in 2017, Starcevich has not delivered it. I have him on my board in the 45 to 60 range meaning I would be ok if he slid to our pick at 69 but he is a hit-up medium forward that has not delivered in the midfield and put simply, he is not a need for us.

I am not confident Rioli will make it as our much needed crumber so we need to get a small forward with one of our picks in the 30's. They will be around - preference is Moore but not stuck.

surely is we take allen and fogarty/o'brien, we go for a genuine contested beast like worpel at 26.

Brander is the most talented tall in the draft IMO .
We need to draft our next genuine key forward and with no first rounder next year it has to be now .
Look at all the gun FFs they are all first rounders or would have been in an open draft .

I suspect if Brander or Allen are available at 13 we will take.

Perhaps this is the reason why we have loaded up on 2nds, KPF and then mid, followed by mid, followed ....

On the averages (firstly being multiple picks & secondly, eventually we have to get the 2nd round right), it could be a masterstroke.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Vardy as a backup key forward for us. (I haven't seen any comments anyway)
I think he has shown plenty when forward. He is basically obsolete next year if Nic Nat and Lycett play, so I would be training him as a forward from now on.

If/when he is at East Perth, I would play him as a forward as much as possible.
He is four years younger than Kennedy and could fill a gap in the forward line for a few years after Kennedy if we want.

He is 200cm but very agile and quick enough for his size.
Just another option in our forward line I believe.

Any chance Stephenson slides to 13 due to his heart condition?
I hadn't heard about a heart condition- what is it?

If it's bad enough that he slides to 13, I don't think we should be looking at him.
(Unless we did a lot of diligence) It would have to be very serious for the 9 clubs that have picks prior to us to overlook him.

Edit: Read the AFL article. I would want a 2nd opinion on those reports if were to draft him. That's more to do with his health and his safety though.

I agree.

I am fully of the belief he starts at CHF next year- his mobility to get around the ground is also very good with his marking ability.

I guess it also depends on how well NN & Lycett come back from injury. In an ideal world they come back fully fit and ready round 1 but who knows what will happen between now and then.

Was interesting listening to that road to the draft podcast.

When it came to our pick and they mentioned that they were going local, my 1st thought was "here we go".

But then they were talking about Allen and what he can offer. They mentioned his spring & reach, the fact he has played some midfield later in the year at WP & he is eye catching. Even being compared to Stephenson in the way he moved at times. It was well reasoned.

If it came to a choice between Clark/Allen at 13, I'd prefer Clark. But I'm warming to Allen. Everything I've heard from him is how driven he is, how he wants to improve. (He thought he lacked consistency through the champs - yet he won the latke medal).

And it was only a few months ago we were hot in the chase for Mitch McGovern- he's about the same height. If you can leap i don't think it's the end of the world.

I'd be disappointed if we chose Ling in our 20's picks. Especially if Bailey was available.

13. Allen
21. O'Brien
27. Kelly
32. Worpel
37. Miller

Would be happy with that.
I'm not overly keen on Allen, but if we do, I wouldn't go another tall this draft like Miller at 37 personally. I would go another mid at 37. And get a small forward later in the draft like Ryan or Sambono.
I admit I can't find a single piece of footage on Miller's gameplay, so nothing against him. I do rather like Kreuger, so I wouldn't mind him as our tall for the draft.

For me, I hope for something like:

13. Clark / Higgins / Constable
21. Bailey / O'Brien
27. Kelly
32. Worpel / Petruccelle
37. Kreuger / Miller

Ryan / Sambono
