Why is anyone expecting Allen to be explosive? He's a smooth mover; size, agility, endurance, overhead strength and skills are the assets I feel he could bring IF he did make a midfield transition.
He tested in the top 10 for agility, which is pretty good for a guy his size

If there's talk of Kelly going in the early 20s, I dare say we should forget about him playing for us. Can't see us pulling the trigger at 21. Guess it all depends on who slides from the teens

Allen looks strange with those stumpy arms in your (otherwise excellent) shop. Perhaps you could stretch it longways considerably, to improve the accuracy and reflect his incredible reach.

If other sides are willing to take him with early 20s, why not us? Especially given we've stockpiled a lot of selections around that mark.

I think using 21 would just be crossing the threshold of paying too much. I think we can get a decent slider at 21. 26 on the other hand presents at much better value.

I just mean I just can't see us using 21. I think we will bite with 26 though, but it sounds like some teams before that are keen.

Sliders are tasty but I rather a burger.

You make some great point about players reach and I do find the reach of a player important but at the same point I don't agree with some of you player comparisons tbh. Imo the game is evolving in a way that it seems like current trend is that kpp players these days are as talls as ruckmen but possess the ability and nobility of players shorter than them. Blokes like daniher , t. Lynch, b.brown, Dixon, Patton, Hopwood, P. Wright are some of them that are leading the way these days. Even guys like jk, buddy as Hawkins aren't that much far away from them in terms of height.

That's why I think the bloke you have named are bit irrelevant tbh, pav and too are players from the previous areas and both played hff/wing roles later in their careers.

That's why I just can't see a 190cm odd kpf going to be your main focal point up forward.
It is true that the current trend is towards taller key forwards, and it is also true that their additional height offers them an advantage as a marking target, provided it is used effectively.
But that doesn't mean that shorter key forwards can't or don't work. Nothing has happened in the last 10 years that would make a 192cm key forward less effective, it just so happens that we've seen taller key forwards become more effective (presumably because junior clubs have stopped automatically pigeon-holing 198cm+ players as ruckmen). We're not seeing monstrously tall defenders that are rendering smaller key forwards ineffective or anything like that.

As far as Pavlich and Riewoldt becoming HFF/wing players from a different era, I think that's a fiction. They were effective marking and goal kicking targets up until the end of their careers. Freo in particular stopped playing Pavlich through the midfield late in his career because he no longer had the tank and they had nobody else to kick goals. The fact that their production trailed off was due to age, not due to any change in how footy is played.

Your point with respect to Pavlich/Riewoldt also raises an interesting question: do shorter key forwards have an advantage in being able to play more midfield/wing/flank roles when required? Given the successes of the past few premiers in playing shorter teams that emphasise skills, pressure and running ability, I think there is absolutely a place for shorter, more versatile forwards that offer those attributes.

Whether Oscar Allen is that forward or whether he can be a "focal point" is an entirely different question altogether, I just don't think it's as cut and dry as saying that he isn't tall enough to be effective for us. FWIW I'd probably want him to be played in the midfield regardless.
