If we trade Swallow for scraps and pay out LT but dont land Lang how many spots are we needing to fill at the draft?

Gibson, Mullett, Hansen, LT, Swallow - thats it right?

So currently 4, 23, 46, 64, 78

Be nice to somehow get something between 23 and 46

Getting creative in a weak draft and getting a weak return in minor pick upgrades gets us nowhere. Next year is the year for creativity, not now. Take our medicine, get a high pick for next year and get our father-sons and academy picks.

Every club is going to get creative next year. And there is no guarantee that these f/s picks are coming to North or they are going to be gun players. Nothing wrong with upgrading picks to target certain players in the draft.

Thompson will most likely be one year only, and trading Tarrant out puts our defence very very young....or at least in terms of experience. VIP over the next few years to help with the development of those youngins. And he's still young enough to be around for our next tilt.

I fully agree with the benefit of keeping him for the development of the young KPD. The same can be said for Goldy with Preuss.

I disagree that Tarrant (and Goldy) will be of any benefit for when we rise up the ladder.

And at the end of the day in 5 years time we could have Coffield streaming off half back or Brayshaw winning it in the midfield as an added bonus to the other young kids we will draft going forward, vs tazz who will have retired since then.

There is the possibility that tazz might make the young KPD look better than they are. Giving us confidence to go with them on the future and then struggling once tazz is gone.

It's not a perfect solution but that trade would be way better for us long term than doing nothing IMO.

It would be an ultra brave move and won't happen so there is no point arguing about it

Wags also so that would be 6 vacant primary slots.

Expect we would look to take extra rookies in the above scenario.

Saints have a surplus of rucks thus assume wouldnt be interested in Goldy.

Potential trade that could interest them-

In: 7, 8, 1R STK 2018 (15)
Out: 4, Tarrant, 2R NM 2018 (20)

Taz valued at 11 from a points perspective some later picks could also be exchanged.

Saints gain KPD, upgraded pick to get a mid + retain some presence in 2018.

They do have depth but longer and hickey aren't great.

I actually think that Goldy has some good footy infront of him if he can get his head right. He showed some good signs at times in what was a crap year overall.

I think he could be a strong upgrade for a team
Like the saints

They have Holmes also contracted.

As for Goldy I think he is ideal for a team in the window and it wouldnt surprise me if he regained his AA form and played for another 3-4 years.

Is there any chance we might consider off loading any player who has been in the system say more than 3 years, for whatever we can get and then go to the draft with picks 130, 131, 132, 133, and so on up to about 160?

Might suit a few here.

4 and 23 is not enough. We need more. You specifically were talking about taking 'once in a generation' players early next year yesterday.

could not agree more, but my response was directed to Thewlis who is basically throwing his arms in the air and saying we can't do anything, we have no players of any value and the picks we have are not enough, fine but let's get innovative if that means salary cap dumping so be it, if it means paying Swallow's or Goldie's salary to push up for some better pick so be it, I am just over the Doom and Gloom that Thewlis constantly talks, maybe if he could occasionally come up with an idea to improve our position it wouldn't be so bad. If finishing low (I don't want a friggen spoon) is what it takes to get a generational player next year, so be it. I would even look at trading our first this year for someone's first next year, risky I know but rewards could be enormous. I would even take Mayne and half his salary for Collingwood's second next year. There are many ways to skin a cat but Doom and Gloom ain't one of them.

Holy shit, this thread...

Assuming all those that are talked about possibly moving do go (Swallow, Goldy & LT) then in terms of experience we have:

Back: Tarrant (28/105 games), Williams (24/81), Macmillan (26/117), Wright (27/116) Thompson (31/200)*
Forward: Brown (24/77 games), Higgins (29/183), Waite (34/231)*
Midfield: Ziebell (26/166 games), Cunnington (26/165), Atley (25/154), Jacobs (25/77), McDonald (22/74)

*assume just 1 more year

It is still a fair bit of experience, I think it is better for kids to develop with a fair bit of experience around them, that is what Melbourne and Carlton did wrong is they took out too much experience.

That being said, when younger players start improving, you need to make space for them if you are not in a realistic window.

Younger players in the midfield mix next year; Ahern (21/0), Simpkin (19/13), Clarke (20/21), Dumont (22/39), McDonald (22/74) plus I would expect our first and second round picks to be in the mix in the middle. IT is a fairly young group, a fairly inexperienced group but I think we have enough experience there. I think Higgins should go back to half forward and at times Ziebell to go forward as well.

What we really need is to have a full compliment midfield, not players going back to occupy space and we really need a focus on putting aggressive pressure on the ball carrier which will take more pressure off of our defenders than having guys just standing in the middle of nowhere.

Our forward line will be dangerous with Brown, Waite, Wood, Higgins and Garner. Another year from Waite will give more time for Wood, Durdin and McKay to find their feet.

I'd like to see Anderson go back and work on being a shut down defender who plays on small forwards.

If we can, I would like to see us be able to upgrade our third and fourth round picks to better picks perhaps instead of getting a late round pick for Swallow or LT.

I don't think we could expect the world for Goldy, if he does decide to move, but we could probably carry his entire salary and get something more attractive from GWS, giving them the option of having a free ruckman for 2 years would allow them to offer better contracts to some players being chased. With the depth of talent they still have, they probably will be offloading their 2nd and 3rd round type players on Carlton in a few years anyway.

People shouldn't discount the value of 2nd and 3rd round picks, a lot of our better players over the journey haven't been early round picks.

Jack Watts going a lot of Melb supporters werent happy with but now that it was pick 31; they're very upset.
About what we offered them a couple years back and the melbourne board Vetoed
