Yeah, we really lack an inside mid of any class....Balic would have been handy, but that ship has sailed.
Our inside mids are Fyfe, Neale, Mundy, Hill, Blakely. Some of them are multi-tasking, but I still think they are the group we are looking at. Balic would have been handy, but I am not confident that he would be better.

I am sure the list management will boost our midfield over the off season. One of the possibilities is from the Balic move. I am not confident that we will get anything of note for him, but hope for pick upgrades.

Regarding pick 5, I don't see a bad option for us (or likely option).
- Keep it and go best mid sounds great (Cera, Brayshaw, Stephenson, Fogarty etc).
- Keep it and go best tall also great (Brander, Fogarty, Naughton)
- Trade down for extra picks (there is a real evenness and this could be great value)
- Trade for a player and later picks (Wilson + picks)

I don't agree with the view that pick 5 is a rare opportunity and we must use it to get high end talent. Every club has thought that at some stage and drafted a dud. Being opportunistic at the trade table is a good strategy.

I was at the TAC gf last night & was sitting near the club talent scouts on level 2 who all greet each other, joke around & sit within a fseats of each other, bar a couple who sit a bit apart.
When I watch a young player I'm of the opinion that you can give them a "yes" after 1 game, but you can't give them a "no"
From the game I liked
Charlie Constable who is listed at 190cm, but can play as either a forward target, or as a mid.
Kai Owens 192cm tall forward who took some good contested marks
Joel Amartey 195cm Paddy Ryder clone is a ripper.
Hayden McLean a 197cm key forward with a body suggesting he could play soon, & a rugged attitude.
Max King is a year younger, but for the 2018 draft there is a kid who is 201cm, mobile & skilled.
Will Walker 187cm mid forward, kicks goals & bursts from play, but could get it a bit more.
Gryan Miers is only 177cm, but he was the most natural footballer out there. Even when he wasn't in the play he was making good position & creating space. He kicked 7, but missed a pretty easy one & had a snap stopped on the line. Very good player.
Samuel Walsh 182cm good runner & ball user. Good link player.
James Worpel 185cm breaks tackles gets the ball. Good mid.
Tom McCartin 192cm good lead up forward.

Some better known players I didn't give the "yes" to yet were :
Cassidy Parish 190cm mid gets the ball ok, but handballed to the opposition when not under much pressure at least a couple of times.
Andrew & Hamish Brayshaw (183 & 187 cm) were certainly good players, but looked "vanilla" in my eyes. One positive was that they both played better the longer the game went.

From the VFL gf, if we lose any key defenders, I'd certainly look at Lucas Cook as a key defender at 195cm. Yes, I know he didn't fire a shot when he had his first go at AFL, but yesterday he was a class above as a marking key defender.
The other guy I would look at is Anthony Anastasio a 169cm energetic mid forward. He could play the Ballantyne role & develop into a cult figure, with his shock of bright red hair.

2 awesome games (I didn't go to the women's game) for $23. Great entertainment & it was nice to sit in the fancy section instead of the cheap seats for a change.

I still reckon the best option is to trade the pick to a team like Carlton, Collingwood, GC for their 2018 first or one of the higher teams for their 2018 first and a 2017 second. Constantly amazed by the talent in next years draft pool and I reckon that we should be doing a Hawthorn '01 and loading up to get some amazing players.

Great review. Thanks for that.

I think Constable is another to add to the many options at pick 5. Lloyd said the top 7 were fairly even at this stage so from now on in it'll depend on who impresses at the game on Saturday and the combine but Charlie's game yesterday would have to had improved his place in the pecking order?

For me I was slightly disappointed in the Brayshaw boys, they were really solid but when Geelong got a run on in the third all of Sandringham went missing.
All-stars game was a real eye opener last year, Bolton, Taranto, McLuggage and Florentine really showed their wares.
Adam Garner at 194cm and a mobile tall was excellent but I think if we after a tall in that range we go for Allen.

Agree 100% with your thoughts, however my comment was really aligned to the fact we have no inside mid depth and with Mundy retiring probably next year now presents as a great time to draft one and have him ready to fill the void in 2018 should injuries arise or permanently in 2019. I would ideally like a kpf, but have gone cold on brander who seems to have been the top rated historically.

Watched the WAFL Colts GF yesterday and those that talked about the development at EF are bang on. Rob Wiley's (their head coach who was helping) family was next to me in the stands and just seems a really good coaching and development culture at EF (no wonder he left WCE). Clay McLernon has done a fantastic job with the Colts and they just dominated because they were so much better organised. Patmore, England and Morgan all had very little influence (almost non-existent early in the game - England had a bit of a shocker). Claremont's ruck, Lewis Davis, I thought was the only reason they weren't smashed by even more - some of his contested marking was insane against two good talls (O'Reilly and Watson - who also both played well imo) - not an AFL option imo.

Chris Scott potentially is though. His marking at HB and rebound was a stand out. 193cm, similarities to Naughton but with a better kick (not as strong in other areas though), he could be a smokey for the draft.

O'Reilly was very quiet in the second half but his first quarter was more than enough to put a tick next to him imo. His aerial ability is fantastic (one touch - although he did drop one easy one) and when the ball comes near him you just expect a score. He's also a dead eye in front of goals. He rucked a bit but not sure it's his future. What impressed me the most was his vision/footy smarts. He received a hand ball (early in the game) and was aware enough he was about to get smashed so instantly hand balled on to another player's advantage. Ended in a goal and it was all because of his quick thinking and ability to dispose effectively in congestion. Really skilled - surprised me a bit. Probably the main question mark I have is his endurance. He spent most time at FF and really didn't get a sense of his run the whole game - not sure he is that fast either. Suspect he is that genuine full forward inside 50 threat that leads well, good on the ground, can take a contested grab and can bring the small fwds into the game with his presence. Get it in his hands for a mark inside 50 and you can pencil the goal in. Need to see more of him though but early signs I think he'd be a great pick-up for us.

Joyce had a pretty slow start but worked himself into the game and ended up having a pretty strong impact. One to watch next year alongside O'Reilly @ EF. Could easily see EF colts being dominant again with the quality of their bottom agers and coaching. Ambrose Ryan was also pretty impressive - great mark for 177cm. Liked the x-factor of Samuel Lewis also but his feet seemed to go faster than his brain at times. Timothy Bockman was also dangerous up forward both kicking and creating goals.

It should also be noted that Dillon O'Reilly whilst in the State 17's squad was deemed not good enough to play State 18's.

Obviously he finished the season in fantastic form and the colts leading goal kicker. He is still a bottom ager and it will be interesting to see how he develops next year.

Yeah I think that's what I like about O'Reilly the most. He's consistently improved over the season. Crossing fingers he continues that trend next year. Although him not going too high in the draft might not be the worst thing for us either :)

What about Chris Scott this year? I didn't notice him in the u18 champs but seems to have been pretty consistent for EF Colts and probably peaked yesterday. Saw him referred to as a mid in a recent article but pretty sure he only played HB in the GF. Do you know if he rotated through the midfield during the regular season?

A lot of the players I'm tracking are for next year (Hill, Carter, O'Reilly, Moore, Joyce, English etc). Any of the Colts boys not invited to the national combine a chance to get drafted in your opinion (eg Scott, Cramer, Redhead etc)?

For me Redhead would be a no. He was very disappointing in the 18's Champs, has height on his side which drafters always look at, but it would be a no from me.

Scott is definitely rated and like O'Reilly has improved throughout the year. He has the size and ability to be a midfield weapon like a Patrick Cripps that talent managers look for.

Apparently Scott is 193/194cm so he's a good size to be mobile enough to play mid and HB. Worth looking at, but as meima said, he'd need to be schooled on tackling to fit in with Ross.

The guy we should be keeping a close eye on is Jack Buller from Claremont. He kicked their second goal yesterday after some good individual work in the goal square and at 197 cm will be a very good draft prospect in 2 years, either at CHB or CHF.

Is Ben Miller a better option than Redhead? Not that I think we need another ruckman or ruck/forward unless either Strnadica or Apeness get delisted (or both)

From what I saw he'd need to have attitude bypass surgery first though. Was not impressed at all by how he reacted when he had a free kick against him in a marking contest - think it was the 2nd quarter? Thought he dropped his head after that but he wasn't alone.

Definitely IMO, although at 196 cm he is more likely to be KP than ruck in the AFL. He doesn't take a backward step, has really good hands and doesn't mind throwing his weight around and protecting his teammates. I would love him on our list to replace either Griff or Clarke despite him being a little shorter.
