MJ is one that doesn't need to be quick to be effective. Just such a good football brain.
Spurr very tough & courageous. Good intercept mark too.
Its hard to know what qualities they both bring beyond the obvious that make them essential inclusions when their skills and athletic abilities have fallen behind what the youngsters can bring.
My preference is to play a Hughes or Logue in front of either of them but I have no idea how this effects the infield dynamic or cohesion.
I really hope Lyon has mastered the fine line between not discarding experience too soon and persisting stubbornly with the same old same old expecting different results which has been his major failing IMO in the past.
Sorry for butting in as an opposition supporter. But when you look at the back half if youth is the go and it should be. Then if Hughes, Logue, Ryan, Hamling, Wilson and if fit A Pearce all play then the most experienced defender would be wilson at age 25 and just 77 games.Even Hamling at 24 yrs has only played 45 games of footy that makes him the second most experienced and ature player in the back half.
I think M Johnson will play just to give some experience and leadership down back. I think he will play early in the yr anyway because i dont think Pearce will be ready.

Id be looking for a good combination of youth/experience pace run and good foot skills. Atm id be going something like this

FB: Hughes 187/88 23yo/24gms - Hamling 194/90 24yo/45gms - Logue 193/95 19yo/13gms.
HB: Ryan 186/88 22yo/11gms - Johnson 195/92 33yo/231gms - Wilson 185/82 25yo/77gms.

C: B Hill 181/78 24yo/117gms - Blakeley 188/90 22yo/33gms - S Hill 183/81 27yo/190gms.

HF: Walters 177/75 27yo/111gms - McCarthy 192/92 22yo/40gms - Bennell 185/85 25yo/83gms.
FF: Mundy 192/91 32yo/272gms - Taberner 199/98 24yo/53gms - Matera 173/74 26yo/101gms.

R : Sandilands 211/118 35/254 - Fyfe 190/92 26yo/138gms - Neale 177/82 24yo/113gms.

INT: Cerra 186/81 18yo/0gms - Brayshaw 184/84 18yo/0gms - Langdon 182/78 22yo/25gms - Tucker 183/83 21yo/31gms. A spot could go to a swingman like cox or even Darcy playing from the bench in the ruck. But i dont think you will play both Sandi and Darcy in the one team.I think they will be rotated through different games.

In defense i thing Hughes and Ryan look great and should be played. the rest apart from the Pearce conundrum speaks for itself.

Midfield plenty of pace and i reckon Blakeley is a beauty. Not a fan of B Hill though but thats where he will play. Fyfe, Sandi, Neale and Mundy rotating thru there can not be sneezed at.

Fwd half. Pace with Bennell Matera and Walters they need to bring fwd half pressure. No reason why McCarthy cannot play a Jack Riewoldt role just work and run his guts out hit up be a link or shake the opponent and get back.Taberner is a big unit he gives a long out needs to compete and at worst bring the ball to ground.
Put Mundy here as well lots of good reasons to do it. His age his size and his ability to go thru the middle as well. just rotate him and Fyfe a bit like Martin and Caddy the Caddy role is what Mundy needs to do.

Interchange well its a way to ease young players into games its young but hey thats what you lot are about atm.

Its a young side but it only has three teenagers in it it has 9 or so blokes with 100 games or more to their credit and it has only the three vets to give a bit of guidance and plain old know how.The rest are in an ideal age bracket aged 22 thru 27 it means it should be competetive and there should not be huge blow outs. I think ya may even surprise a few people if the injury gods are kind.

Pretty good lineup . However I think johnos days are numbered ,has got slower and I think I would stick Alex Pearce in that position.

Good read! I'm with Redgum and hope that Alex takes over sooner rather than later. I also feel like Ross will try Darcy fwd so that both he and Sandi are in the side together.

Can you imagine what Grey, Ballantyne etc ,etc would have done to that second rate Perth side. I think that the form shown in that WAFL game needs to be seen in the right context.
Agreed. I dont want anyone written off after one game either. All Im saying is the skills Cerra and Crowden apparently demonstrated in the Perth game helps them move closer towards and early debut. Havent written off Balla and Grey by any stretch.

Maybe more a question of Logue vs MJ rather than Pearce judging by the way he started back yesterday. Only a few possessions but some really good touches even then.

But even if Alex's fitness is good he won't play every game straight back, MJ could easily play 12-15 games just covering for Pearce/Hamling/Hughes/Logue in the backline. Really don't want to see MJ or Alex forward, maybe Logue continues with the experiment but to be honest I hope Freo play their absolute best defence and the forward line can find its cobbles elsewhere.

(Yes I know its one JTL game with Logue doing well in the Peel match.... Just another 2c worth).

Was logue injured over the preseason?
I can't remember hearing about it.

Everyone here (Including me), seems to see him as a walk up start for best 22, but does being selected for Peel and A.Pearce looking fit and ready again change that at all.
Could they go - Hamling, A.Pearce + Johnson.
Rather than - Hamling, Logue, A.Pearce/Johnson?

Seems like a cause for concern to me ...

Why would that be a cause for concern? Logue is at the start of his career and Johnson at the end of his. Logue has things to learn, and some of those things may be best learned in the wafl, others at the higher level.

Wilson, Hamling, Ryan
Logue, A Pearce, Blakely
B Hill, Brayshaw, S Hill
Bennell, McCarthy Mundy
Matera, Taberner Walters
Sandilands, Fyfe, Neale

Darcy, Langdon, Cerra, Tucker

E: Hughes Banfield Cox Kersten Ballantyne Crowden Johnson Giro Sheridan

Hughes stiff and comes in for Bennell for the time being or if we only play one ruck.

I know it's the best 22 but I have made mine to be a realistic best 22 for round one, just my thoughts.

I have also put 7 in defence and 5 forward as this is the way we line up and Blakely is already been termed the 7th defender.

Really really wanted Cerra in that team ahead of Ballas but it wont happen straight away.

I have a strong feeling that Ross has fallen in love with the potential forward pressure that Matera, Ballas and Walters will provide (with Brady Grey coming in if one is injured)

I reckon Cox and Tabs will end up sharing the ruck rather than Darcy which will be the shock first round non selection and lead to many melts (rightfully so - I want Darcy to play but this seems a more versatile and running team).

A little worried about S Hill (Hammy then Calf) so a change to my team is still possible (Cerra)

Don't mind it but personally I think Hughes has Tucker and Langdon covered for performance at this point and I'd have him in ahead of both.

I think the real change in Johnson has been a loss of agility in the last couple of years which would be more of a concern if he's playing 3rd tall rather than KPD as he'll be spending a lot more time on small and mid forwards. If we feel we need leadership down there i would prefer to see spurr playing lock down small defender than Johnson playing 3rd tall.......most likely we''ll see both in the team though.

I know he's aging and we have Darcy in the wings. But the Big fella is in fantastic Nick. Sandilands is way to good to leave out and he has been wonderful for this club. The way he was playing yesterday, AA year this year for sure. So bloody strong

Maybe 50 - 100 career goals and 2 marks a game short to be really in the ' Freo's greatest player ' conversation ' up against Pav and Fyfe but I would have no hesitation calling Sandi our most influential player ever. All three have missed extended periods through injury and it's always a relief to get your champs back but the big guy just makes everyone walk taller and changes the chemistry of the side even more that the other 2 , great finals and big game player as well. The West Corp fans / shareholders can froth up about Nic Nat all they like but Sandilands kills him every time they've ever played

Hmmm. No McCarthy or S Hill is a bit radical. But I do like the idea of two Fyfe’s.
Haha - whoops! Yeah I'd bring in Cerra or Banfield for Fyfe 2.0! McCarthy and S.Hill are talents but I omitted them as I want them to be more desperate - as I think it would bring out their best. Btw - I realise the team I've picked would not win too many games. But this is a rebuild!
