I'm okay with 32, agree its around his value. Just meant in general I wish we had another pick in the lower to mid 20's, regardless where it came from.
Certainly agree. I think trading up the Dahl compo pick to somewhere in the mid teens where it could be used before West is bid on would he something we are trying to wrangle also

Do we then assume from your comments, you haven't actually watched Smith play ? I'll be both amazed and delighted if he is still available at our pick [ always assuming we hang onto it]. Personally I'd take Smith if we had 3, assuming Walsh and Lukosius would already be gone.

Watched a highlights package. Just my first impression.

Dream scenario for me would be if we could somehow manage to turn our pick 7 into Brisbane's pick 5 via the Marcus Adams deal.

If the draft works out as some have predicted;

1. Walsh
2. Luko
3. Rozee
4. M.King

We would have pick 5 with Rankine still on the board and the Adelaide teams would be desperate to trade up to get him. Desperate teams do silly things to get what they want.

It will be interesting to see how live trading on draft night pans out and how savvy clubs will actually be. The NBA has been doing it forever and it always spices things up a bit.

An example from last years NBA draft was Atlanta drafting Luka Doncic at pick 3. Dallas was so keen to get Luka that they traded both their 2018 first round pick (no.5) and 2019 first round pick (tbd)...

Bailey Smith is the most overrated player in this draft at the moment, talk of him sliding doesn't surprise me. The guy is a tough, powerful stoppage specialist with above average skills & speed. He's basically the Luke Parker type of player, and he'll be very good, but isn't one of the pure talents at the top end of the draft. Walsh, Rankine and Rozee are the real premium midfield talents (Rozee more of a utility), and I think draft night will reflect that.

Right now it's still too difficult to speculate on who will be available at our pick, or if we'll even have the pick at all with the May rumors. All of picks 3, 4 and 5 seem to be up for grabs, with both Adelaide and Port are particularly hungry for them and having the assets to move up. As for us at this moment, I know they're not everyone's favorite pick here, but I think Max & Ben King would be the best picks for us around the 7-range. We need quality ruckmen and quality forwards, and either one of them could potentially fill both roles at an elite level. They're more than just mark-and-kick players too, they actually take the game on and both have great agility for their size. Assuming we take 7 to the draft, I'd be ecstatic with either one of the twins, and would be happy/content with Smith, even though I don't think we should prioritize that kind of player.

I really hope the rumours of us are being into Ben Cavarra are true. Moving on Dahl and likely Honeychurch means I think we can carry another small player on our list at just 173cm.

He's an outstanding talent and really should have been drafted numerous times. He decided he wasn't going to make it at AFL level as a pure midfielder so has focused on his forward craft at Williamstown the last couple of years. He's tough, hard and skillful. Has kicked 32 and 34 goals the last two years and averaged 5 tackles a game as a small forward this season. He's 22 years old and as a mature body would comfortably slot into our best 22 in the forward pocket whilst being able to chop out in the midfield.

Heard VERY good things about Ewan McPherson... Practically a taller Jacko Macrae.
Captained the u16s didn't he?
Have heard excellent things but certainly not about his height.

I remember rating him in his draft year as that small, accumulator type. I don't understand how someone like Hrovat could be so highly rated in 2012, but Cavarra doesn't get drafted for 5 years until he focuses on becoming a good forward.

The Afl needs to do better this ! is so wrong.Unhealthy for the integrity of the comp.quote

"If Lukosius and Rankine end up going to Gold Coast, we're probably pretty happy to try to get them back in a few years' time," Cripps said.

Yeah there's a reason why Ben is one of the standout VFL talents. Hopefully he and Gibbons can get shots as rookies because they are both too talented to be running around in the VFL.

Think it was in this article where they mentioned that he was already 190cm.

I watched the recent dogs video of our father sons training at the club. Ewan has a big frame too, lots of growth to come imo

That's the big thing to look for with tall kids; you can be as tall as you want but if you don't have the frame to put size on then they'll never really put it on. Key things are broad shoulders and hips, Ayce Cordy couldn't put weight on because he was just too lanky and would always be a beanpole.

Dogs and Freo have put in a fair bit of work into Cavarra. Tested exceptionally well too.

What if it’s Max we get? He’s a forward only. Not as convinced he’s a given for Saints as some.
You take him if he's their. With our forward line struggles recently. Be foolish to overlook a bloke that can potentially kick a bag in a game. We've been crying out for it for a while now. Still hopeful Boyd can be serviceable with a good pre-season and injury interrupted year. And one of Smith or B King goes at 7. Sounds like the club is hoping Smith or perhaps will be the one that slides. With Power talking about Boyd spending more time forward and Trengove spending more time back. Hopefully we can hit the ball out of the park this draft too. Like we did last year and it will set us up very nicely.

Twomey said on trade radio that he expects a bid to happen for West around the 17-25 mark. It might be nice to get another pick before then.

Geelong have no 2nd round picks so maybe we could do a deal with them similar to the Ed Richard's deal from last year which was...
Western Bulldogs trade picks 28 and 30 and their 2018 second-round pick
For Carlton's picks 16 and 40.

So would you do something like this again? Eg. Pick 27 + pick 32 (Adams trade) + future 2nd round pick for pick 12.

If so what player would you like to take in this range?

Geelong need to take first round picks in the draft to avoid trade sanctions.... unless they get WC first round pick, they won't trade that pick.

IF we do get 12, then O'Halloran, RCD, Hately all come into consideration.

IF we get a pick about 20, then Ely Smith or any of the above mentioned would be ideal.

Would you do it though? It doesn't necessarily have to be Geelong by the way.

I guess it would depend on who's left on the board on the night. But say if RCD (or someone else you like) is available at pick 14 for example, would you do it.

Anyway I'm getting a bit excited with live trading. It would be pretty cool if we could do a live trading phantom draft after the trade period, not sure if we could get it to work properly though. Anyone interested?

Sounds like fun to be a part of, a nightmare to organise though.
