Sam McClure

Geelong have contacted St Kilda and the management of Jack Steven about the contracted Saint.

Lorne boy. Trade would be hard.

More coming up @1116sen and @theagesport.
And St Kilda:

Nothing will come of the Jack Steven talk. We will ask the world for him and no club will want to give it up. Especially Geeling who seemed to have realised that giving away high picks for older players is not getting them anywhere.

This is a guess. It is not fact.
McClue said we won't entertain it.

And its Geelong who is chasing him, not the other way around. They also tried to get him in 2014 but instead he signed for 5 years.

I agree. It would take pick 12 and Cerra (or pick 5) to come close to satisfying us, oh, Geelong can have Paddy too if they so wish.

Probably the most important parts of Sam McClures article.

"Steven is contracted until the end of 2020 and St Kilda remains adamant that he will not be considered as a player that could be traded."

"The Age understands that Steven was keen on knowing the direction of the club during his recent exit interview, but that he’s shown no signs of wanting to leave."

Only really one way to get it done

Geelong give Kelly, get Steven
Freo give 5, get Kelly
We give Steven, get 5

agree but we probably need someone like parfit coming back too

here's the thing though, the moment you pull the trigger on that trade, then you might as well just sack richo. he cant make finals without steven and steven will only be leaving because of the 2 years of waste on his career because we wont play finals under richo nor in the remainder of his career

Aside from price, the trade is awkward for Geelong because of Steven's age. But what if a certain young power forward from St Kilda was included in a package deal?

Interesting trade period,
If we do except a pick 5 for Stuv and go to draft night with live trading , good chance we walk away with Adelaide picks 7 & 14 .
Thats Five 1st round selections in two years .

if thats the path then the strategy has been reset and not publicly communicated. it implies rebuild 2. i would guess that the plan is to appoint a new footy boss. then sometime next year when richo is eventually sacked, they reset everything.

Geelong’s drive to continually land A-grade stars in the trade period is showing no signs of abating, with the Cats making a play for St Kilda gun Jack Steven.

It comes as Geelong publicly declared on Monday that it was embarking on a “deep analysis” of its list management strategy.

Steven, who hails from Lorne, has long been on the Cats’ radar and The Age can confirm that Geelong has contacted both the Saints and Steven's management about his availability.

Steven is contracted until the end of 2020 and St Kilda remains adamant that he will not be considered as a player that could be traded.

The 28 year-old will be the favourite to take out his fourth Trevor Barker Award at the club’s best and fairest this year and is seen by many at the club as the Saints’ spiritual leader.

The Age understands that Steven was keen on knowing the direction of the club during his recent exit interview, but that he’s shown no signs of wanting to leave.

Geelong’s pursuit of Steven comes as CEO Brian Cook candidly conceded on Monday that his football department may have to rethink its recruiting strategy moving forward.

“There’s no doubt about that. The analysis has begun for us since the weekend.” Cook said on SEN.

Steven has been courted by Geelong in the past.

“It’s probably time for a really good look at what we’re doing, right through into our playing list and our style.

“You’ve got to make a decision at some stage as to whether you really go all in to win a premiership or try to stick around eighth. We have to talk about those things.

“We have to decide whether we continue to go through both, or whether we 'err' on one side [or] we go back to simply drafting kids."

Geelong has been an admirer of Steven for several years now.

The surf coast local met with the Cats at the end of 2014 before turning his back on free agency to sign a five year contract to remain at St Kilda.

Steven is a crucial figure for the next period at the Saints.

Not only is he arguably their best player but he’s also significant because he will help attract other players to the club.

Geelong report card: Are the Cats coming or going?
The Saints will look to be aggressive in the upcoming trade period.

As reported by The Age last week, they have joined the race with Hawthorn, Essendon and Carlton to attempt to lure Dylan Shiel from Greater Western Sydney, and the club still remains poised to land contracted Sydney Swan Dan Hannebery.

Steven would be the perfect inclusion into Chris Scott’s side next year, particularly if they lost gun first year recruit Tim Kelly who is open to a move back home to Western Australia.

But even if the Saints did entertain a trade for Steven at all, the other challenging part of the equation would be Geelong trading for him.

The Cats’ first round selection – currently pick 12 – wouldn’t go near satisfying a trade for a player of Steven’s calibre.
Funny how the club suddenly has A Graders once it becomes convenient for the media...

No mention of the fact that technically Geelong need to use a first rounder on the draft this year or face a sanction...?

Incorrect I believe. Pretty sure that rule doesn't come into play until next year and even then clubs can ask the AFL for permission to do it.

If the afl reckon they've been trading firsts responsibly there's no reason to not let them continue doing it.

Could you imagine if that rule had been in play when Hawthorn were trading their firsts for great returns year after year and the AFL had stopped them from doing it, when the rule was only brought in to protect clubs from themselves if they were wasting them!? Might have cost them a flag.

Sorry to hijack the current Jack Steven speculation but I noticed there's been talk on this thread about St Kilda interest in Brandon Ellis. Is this just standard Bigfooty rumour or does it have merit? Cheers.

It's not even a rumour, it's just us talking about anyone from other clubs that might be a potential trade target, and because you guys will be looking to free up cap space for Lynch, and he's not in the seniors, he might be the type that is available, and who would be a clear upgrade on some we've got, or have let go.

I don't think anything concrete. Just speculation that Richmond might have cap problems fitting in Lynch. And who would possibly go. I wouldn't worry about it. Just BF talk.
