List Mgmt. 2018 St Kilda Trade Thread Part 4

Just thinking about the 5 year plan put in place back in 2013 and it all coming together in 2018.
What a missed opportunity .it seems that everything was on track to succeed but the football department has failed miserably .
We’ve had some great success with moving back to Moorabbin etc but it seems the footy department was not overseen or managed.
If we were on track ,with all the cash built up ,we would be a destination club, and would have picked up the GWS fire sale .
The football head Really needs a swift kick up the ass .i am not sure if that is Cox or Cho or both but the window was forseen and planned for 5 years ago and he has dismantled the plan with pure incompetence.

No it suggests that if there is one vacant rookie spot that we can use the mid-season rookie draft to fill that spot. I think it means that if a club kept a vacant spot in its rookie quota then we could draft either an in-form state league player, or a specialist player (ruck, key defender) if required. It also suggests that clubs have first right to re-contract those players at the end of the season.

AFL brings in mid-season rookie draft for 2019
Lee Gaskin Oct 4, 2018 5:07PM

A MID-SEASON rookie draft will be introduced in the AFL in 2019.

Clubs will also be able to sign players via the rookie list between December 1 and March 15 to replace retired or seriously injured players.

To be eligible for the new rookie-list places, players must have previously nominated for the NAB AFL Draft, or had previously been on the list of an AFL club.

Clubs will be able to take part in the mid-season rookie draft if they have a list spot available, or if they create one by moving a long-term injured or retired player to the new 'inactive list'.

The draft order will be based on reverse ladder order at a mid-season date to be specified.

Clubs must make any pre-season list changes between December 1 and March 15.

The change was approved by the AFL Commission following its meeting in Melbourne last week.

Had the new rules been in place for this year, Carlton would have been able to put defender Sam Docherty – who missed the season with a torn ACL suffered in November 2017 – on the inactive list and replace him with a rookie-listed player.

Likewise, Sydney could have found a replacement for versatile big man Kurt Tippett, who announced his retirement in January.

However, Adelaide would not have been able to replace utility Curtly Hampton as he retired ahead of round 18, well after a mid-season rookie draft would likely be held.

AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon said the new list rules would allow clubs to address any unexpected holes in their lists.

"In the interest of creating further opportunities for clubs to improve their lists, clubs will now be able to make additions as required throughout pre-season and also participate in a mid-season draft," Dillon said.

"These changes seek to increase list flexibility for the industry while also providing a further competitive balance tool in the middle of the season."

The addition of the mid-season rookie draft will assist clubs in bolstering their lists during the season, especially with specialist positions such as ruckmen.

State-league players who were overlooked in the draft, but who have strong starts to the year, could be rewarded with a spot on an AFL list in the second half of the season.

The AFL is working with clubs, the state leagues and the AFLPA to finalise the rules that will support the changes.

How the rookie-list replacements will work
Pre-season list changes (Dec 1, 2018 to Mar 15, 2019)

  • Clubs that have a rookie list spot available can now utilise it by signing a player during this period.
  • To be eligible, players must have previously nominated for the NAB AFL National Draft or previously been on the list of an AFL club.
  • If a club suffers an injury or retirement, a list spot can be created by placing a player on an inactive list, and they can now be replaced by a rookie player.
  • Clubs must have the available salary cap for that player as per the current AFL rule
Mid-season rookie draft (date to be confirmed)
  • Should AFL clubs have a list spot available or one is created through a player being placed on the inactive list, they will be able to add a player to their rookie list and select players based on reverse ladder order at a mid-season date to be specified.
  • To be eligible, players must re-nominate for the mid-season rookie draft.
  • Clubs have first rights to re-contract their drafted player or he becomes a delisted free agent.
It also says this in that highlighted bit though
'or if they create one by moving a long-term injured or retired player to the new 'inactive list''

I assume the inactive list is separate from the rookie list so you don't need a spot pre available.

At the start it also says
'Clubs will also be able to sign players via the rookie list between December 1 and March 15 to replace retired or seriously injured players.'

So I think you need a rookie spot available to do it at the start of the season but mid season you can move people to the inactive list to do it.

At least that's what it looks like to me.;)

If May, Lynch, Hall, KK and a few others are leaving the Suns, who is left to choose from to be appointed captain? Could it be Captain Weller?
Touk Miller will be there Captain. One of their only guys who plays with any pride or spirit. They are much better with him leading them than anyone who is walking out because he actual wants to be there and make them better as a club.

You seriously don’t believe that gringo. Come on mate. The guy hadn’t even played then
I'd believe it Plugs!
The guy has got serious form when it comes to being anally stubborn on certain players
and for having favourites whose selections on a weekly basis are inexplicable, not to mention
playing players in baffling positions!

Lets face it. Our coach is a freckled potato!

Can people please stop posting hypothetical's where we give our average to poor players to Gold Coast for one of their picks. That will never happen and the suggestions are sadder than the team they will be fielding next year.

Agreed. How about langlands and 28 for May and their second round pick

Why do I keep reading that North are trading well, and North will play finals next year?

They have recruited a 28yo downhill skiing NEAFL player, a fringe Melbourne mid at his 3rd club and Port Adelaide's half back flankers.

They traded a good young mid in Ryan Clarke & a promising ruck in Pruess (thanks Longermembery) for a packet of chips, and there is a reason other clubs would avoid picking Thomas if available to them to draft. Then they will be drafting in the 40s at the earliest.

So they missed out on Gaff, Kelly, Swallow & De Goey and got Hall, Polec, Tyson & Pittard, but are somehow doing well? That is the next Watts, Motlop, Rockliff & Thomas at best. Quantity does not = quality.

In 2018, 4 of the top 10 in Norths B+F were over 30 (including 2 of the top 4)
Another 2 are over 28 next year, with two more over 26.
Next year the only players they will have under 24 that look even passible are Ahern, Simpkin and LDU.

With the list profile of a top 4 team they have gone 8th, 15th, 9th in the last 3 years. They will be 8-12 next year at best, and then will lose Higgins, Tarrant, Thompson and Goldstein with Ziebell a year or two after that.

What are they doing? Topping up to stay mid table for one more year and maybe crack 8th? These trades may delay the cliff another year or two, but it is coming and coming hard.

Scully a strong chance to not play footy again ... GWS make out of this like bandits . remove a huge salary for a guy who will be in the medical room the whole year ... for the hawks this is the type of pick they can afford to do , if scully comes good they are seen as heros and praise will be heaped on them by all if scully never plays it will be seen as worth the risk ....

They wound up getting Scully + Scrimshaw for a future 3rd.....
You serious?

That is an absolute joke....Either Wright is a genius or there's some
funny business going on!
How about the holy AFL check that one out! Just like they investigated our trade with
the Hawks couple of years back!

Exactly and not something a bottom side can do especially as we have taken 2 players with some injury doubt on them. That sort of deal can only be made by top clubs

How do you know he is a strong chance to never play again?

Obviously got some serious issues but do you really think Hawthorn would take on his salary if that were the case?

Exactly this.

GWS are no idiots. They don’t just throw players away like the other expansion team. Think about how bad Scullys ankle must be for them to off load him for close to nothing.
