since 2006 in the ashes
australia have won 20 tests vs england who have won 12
whereas england have won 4 series vs australia who have won 3
who would you consider to be to be more the successful side?

Series wins are more important than test wins. They've had three of the historically worst Ashes performances in the past 15 years which marks them down a bit.

The whole point is the retain/regain the Ashes so at 4-4 it's pretty much even.

They've done OK, but it's not wrong to suggest that we could have done better based on the balance of play for much of this series.
In hindsight, we could have taken our chances better but no one gave us a chance before the series. JL has actually made some inspired calls, like leaving Starc out early. And he’s cut underperformers. He gets more than a pass.

In your dreams.

Last test Starc's E/R was 3.3. Throw in 4 wickets, including the match winner from the previous test plus 50 not out at a run a ball. Instead we have Langer's favourite none fer bowler.
On a flatter pitch.. apples and oranges you know.

What a bizarre start to the Test. If you've got the best batsman in the world in your team, and you win the toss on what looks to be a belter of a pitch, why would you give the opposition first use of it? It smacks of Nasser Hussein at the Gabba all those years ago, and if England finishes day 1 on a similar score to what Australia posted that day - 2 for well over 300, Paine will have egg all over his face.

He’s retired and batsmen you don’t chop and change, this entire series Australia has won because they’ve picked the bowlers based on the conditions. Starc has proven time and time again he bowls s**t in England. Siddle also has a good record here in first class cricket, it made sense and the only test they lost was the first one he was dropped for...

Siddle averages literally 2 less than Starc in tests in England.

2. In a country that is supposed to be tailor made for his kind of bowling and where the narrative writers hail him as some sort of ‘Herath bowling in Sri Lanka’ demigod.

He’s now 34 and basically fairly shit.

Bet Warner gets some meaningless runs that come with bulk dropped catches and we have to put up with him again for another couple of seasons.

Selections were straight up bizarre and the toss even worse.

We should be trying to develop young players like Head, Nesar and this was the perfect opportunity. Instead we go back down the old path with Siddle and ****ing Mitch Marsh.

I tend to agree that JL isn't really the problem. Our ODI side pretty much achieved what I expected them to; perhaps even a little better when group placings are considered.

It's just that I don't think Paine has utilised conditions, or his own resources, to the fullest possible effect during his time as captain, and in particular during this series - plus, at Headingley he lost his marbles completely when Stokes entered ODI mode.

The backlash to bowling first is a little overblown, it's going to be a flat pitch with the only movement probably being in the first few hours so we took a chance on getting a few early, we would've done that if Siddle bowled better and we could actually catch.

It's easy to pick on the decision at 86/1 but they could easily be 3 or 4 down if Root had of gone the first time.

So you couldnt answer my question.

No. I think it's obvious and I don't have the stats to hand/can't be bothered looking for someone who is playing devil's advocate.

I'll endeavour to answer yours if you first answer mine - is one wicket in the first session a satisfactory return when you have put the opposition in to bat?
