Sensational crowd for the best football code in the world at the best stadium. Now lets see if we can get to 80k tomorrow.

Preliminary Final weekend is the best. I had a blast. Hoping Collingwood don’t do it as tough though.

Potentially, one good thing of a Richmond v Collingwood GF is that some of the fans on here might have something else to argue about ;)

That is the only positive bit about that the likely GF I have found outside the fact one will lose.
Would need that original plan of a 150k stadium at Waverley to meet demand for that matchup I reckon.

If Collingwood win, the precinct is going to be packed. 100,000 at the G. 20K at Punt Road, 20K at Olympic Park, with a few thousand around the place. Hope they put a few policemen on.
What type of crowd on parade day, (If Collingwood win)? 150K? 200K?
What's the biggest parade crowd we've had?

Fromthe drone /chopper shots on tv looked like 70-30
Most of the white in the crowd was MCC. But I didn't see the breakdown in the top tier

Preliminary Final weekend is in some respects the best footy weekend of the year. Two games so there's a better chance of one turning into a classic or at least an underdog victory, and usually big crowds full of average members without the corporates taking all the tickets.

Here are some ways of breaking down the biggest Preliminary Final crowds:

All time:

No surprises that the top ones all come from the late 60s-early 70s peak. There was a 13 year period between the GF 1960 and GF 1973 where the lowest MCG finals crowd was 82k. Part of that was a 32 game streak from 1965-1972 of never dropping below 90k.

AFL era:

The two Coll/Geel ones are ranked 7th and 10th overall, the only 2 in the top 10 not from the 60s or 70s.

Waverley Park:

Between 1975-1991 the PFs were exclusively played at Waverley Park. This list doubles as the list of biggest PFs anywhere but the MCG.

There was a last PF game there in 1995 due to the advent of the 2 PF system. From 1994-2003 the Prelims were played on the same day if held in different states and Fri/Sat if both in Vic. The exception was 1995 with a game at Waverley in the afternoon and at the MCG at night. I remember going from one ground to the other to watch 2 absolute thrashings in one day. Starting in 2004 they have always played 1 Friday night and 1 Sat.

Outside Vic:

The larger capacity Stadium Australia leads the way, although the Perth Stadium and Adelaide Oval crowds are ground records at virtually 100% capacity. The Syd/Bris PF was surprisingly (or not) beaten for the ground record by about 1k by the Syd/Coll game there a month earlier. You can see how much Sydney fans had come to hate the ground by the relatively poor PF crowd in 2012.

Weird to think that after this weekend GWS could potentially occupy 2 of the top 3 spots on a list like this but there you go.
Worth remembering that, until 1994 when we got a top 8, the Second Semi was a much bigger game than the prelim. Usually 1 v 2.

150k Carlton v Geelong 1995.

If it's a Richmond Collingwood Grand Final I reckon will have one of the biggest ratings ever out of Melbourne but it will be a low rating Grand Final nationwide, the lowest we have had in a while.

Collingwood/St.Kilda Drawn Grand Final rated 1,475,000 in Melbourne, Bulldogs/Sydney 1,445,000, Geelong/St.Kilda 1,426,000. Whether it possible to achieve those numbers with today's streaming and other technology will remain to be seen. Certainly will have to be a close game like those 3 above.

Also there'll likely be alot more at BBQs etc if it's an old big 4 match up gf

This is all moot of course because we are just as likely to lose today
