Won’t play footy for his old man these days
Roota having only seen the last 10 years of BFNL footy and seen Derek play as an old bloke, how good was he. I have mates that rave about how good he was in his prime. Does he compare to any local current guns as a player or type?
P.s not being smart, just love hearing these stories.

There is no local player currently that compares to Derek in my opinion. He would be close to the best country footballer there has been. Big strong midfielder who was beautifully and even freakishly skilled. Couldn’t stop him

Guy Campbell at his best

Steven Ash - Shepparton Dean Strauch - Golden Square - both didnt have the longevity of Derrick but similar bulls in midfield. Always a subjective the best there has been......No offence to Derrick but have seen more gifted better players but as stated just not over 3 decades.......

Dekka would be right up there, big bodied mid, kick the ball a mile, swing a game if swung up forward, he and his brother are the best sidestep I've seen, and on top of that brutally tough, wherever he played he had sucess, he was dusty Martin like, Trevor Ryan would be up there but couldn't swing games and kick the big bags of goals

I remember Derek's 400th game playing for Eaglehawk against Sandhurst. He was in his mid 30's at least, playing on a half forward flank and I think kicked 6-8 goals that day on Tim Hartney who was a pretty good player. He just destroyed the Dragons.

Another game was playing for the Bendigo League against the Ovens & Murray at Wangaratta. The Bendigo League were well down at 3/4 time but Derek brought them back into the game off his own back in the last quarter. He completely dominated the midfield, got Bendigo back in the game and they only just went down.

Derek's coaching success's (Kyneton, Kangaroo Flat & Eaglehawk) were all achieved as a playing coach and in my opinion were because Derek set such an outstanding on field example he lifted players around him. It was no fluke he played his best football in finals.

Filo has been cleared to Eaglehawk - may be lining up this weekend. Despite his off field antics his recruitment could be a game changer. Let’s hope that he performs well on field (like he can) and stays off the drink off field. Raiders moved him on very quickly despite his ability.

Would have been great to see him line up at Castlemaine although its highly likely they cant afford him.
Guru,
not sure about Raiders moving him on quickly as he has had multiple incidents and this last one was the straw that broke the camels back. Surprised they cleared him straight away as thought they may hold out and make him miss the rest of the season. Raiders would also be happy to save half a season of $1500 a match to I would say.

Saw ash and strauch playing together at shepparton... absolutely awesome to watch

Again, well done to Ben Lavars and Maryborough. If that club ever achieved some long term sustainability or even wins a flag they have that bloke to thank

And also the BFNL administration so that they have more than five competent teams in the competition and some real interest come September.

Interesting results from Kyneton on the weekend with the seniors and reserves only managing to kick a solitary point in each game, things not looking good at all at Tiger land !

The conditions were about as terrible as this post, kyneton have been better than anticipated all year, after their player departure list, if your going to put the heat on a club, you should have flat in the gun

Flat have a good man in charge..my belief is that their off field is their biggest hindrance. Kyneton have been better than everyone thought but going goal less looks terrible. Castlemaine can’t keep going can they?

Castemaine need Huntley, monfries and brodie filo next year, that would bring in the best locals from the mcdfl and would entice recruits, maybe add brodie as a co coach, it's a bit sad for a club that has produced afl and country superstars

Unfortunately old mate Brodie will not play there whilst his old man and uncle are there. I don’t see what they can do to be honest

Yep conditions were shocking , didn’t seem to bother the many other teams out there who played in the same conditions and managed to kick somewhat of a score
They have nobody to blame but themselves for getting into the position they are in, overspent and under achieved.
Beattie has played some super footy in his days, but having a 40 yo out there isn’t going to help them.
