I feel as though these days, the recruitment departments are so big and more money is invested into it, there would be less and less elite players slip through to those sort of picks. Your best chance to get someone in that category is to have a top 5 pick. I think we need to keep that pick 4 (or at worst drop to 6) and take the best player available.
This article demonstrates that the last 5 or 6 years, players taken at 6 are ahead of 13, whereas it was pot luck 10 or so years ago.

So tempting to do 6 and next year's first with gws for our 4, then swap 6 for geelongs 2 firsts I think 14 and 17.
Maybe use gws 1st rounder next year to get another 1st rounder this year.
Essentially 3 mid to late 1st rounders for pick 4.

Could get Day, Pickett and Gould with those picks and Shoenberg and dekonning with our 20s.

Pick 6 (will end up 7 after Green bid) for what will likely be end up being Pick 16 and 19 (after Green/Henry bids) would not be a good result.
Geelongs’ 1st next year wouldn’t have the currency to get a 1st round draft pick this year. Too much NGA/FS risk/volatility in where the pick could end up.
We would end up with 3 x late 1sts for Pick 4, no thanks.

No, not at 4 given the ACL, if we trade down and get 2 1sts OK then.
Do you think we are any chance of getting Will Day at 23?

If we can split 4 to get Day and McAsey, is that a better option than Jackson or Flanders at 4?

If we do decide to trade 4 for 6 and GWS first next year then I'd like to see us use that GWS first and package it with pick 23 to try and move into the teens in this years draft. Drop back two spots to potentially move up 6 or 7

I think we trade 4 for 6 for sure with the extra first.
Seems like a must given every chance could be pick 12 or so...
Could well see us trying to trade that pick also for another teen pick this year to pick up gould or pickett
Well GCS have too many picks this year. If they can’t bundle 15 and 20 to get up the order then perhaps they’d switch 20 into 2020 for GWS first next year

All this talk of trading down from 4...

We have the ammo to get GWS's 6 or FREO's 10 as well as 4.
They are going to have to trade them into 2020. It's a fact.
It's not like we need to convince them, it's going to happen.

4 & 6
Jackson/Flanders
Jackson/Ash
Jackson/Stevens
Flanders/Ash
Flanders/Stevens
Green/Flanders (if the GWS being hot on Jackson thing is legit).

4 & 10
Jackson/Kemp
Jackson/Stevens
Jackson/MacAsey
Ash/Kemp
Flanders/MacAsey
Flanders/Kemp
Stevens/Day

He'll get a rookie spot I suspect at 24 years old, personally I think he's clearly been our best top up, I know some like Matthews' speed which can be enticing but to my eye Hutchesson has the better all round game. Don't mind Hamish Latchford either.
Yep love Hutchesson with an AFL preaseason he will kill it has speed n agility and poise in traffic . Such a pity he missed the finals with injury as def would have put him on the radar more .plus he got that suspensions that outed him for about four games . Something so Tim Kelly like about his movements in the games I watched in SANFL. Definitely stood out more than Gallucci that’s for sure who also has pace but doesn’t know how to use it .

Maybe you've missed the point?
Of course you want players with character, but overlooking elite players like Martin for example who I know for a fact we wouldn't have taken at any position in that draft even if we could because of his character issues is a big mistake.
One of the main reasons AFC have great people at the club but with little talent.
I hate to say it Faith, but the things you know ‘for a fact’ also include seeing a red headed person at the Henley Beach Cafe...

Soooooooooo

Wonder whether Melbourne picking Jackson or Young at 3 would change draft process. GWS less likely to give up as much for 4 if Jackson gone? Us more keen on getting Young or happier to go down to 6 (in effect) 7 knowing Flanders/Ash likely to be there.

Yeah he does
Cant see us taking another intercept defender tho
My question is whether he can play as a wingman. Those footskills would be fantastic there.

I'm not as bullish on day as bicks is, I think there's a good chance he'll be available at 23.

Out of interest Faith, how much u/18's footy do you watch throughout the year?

You seem to have a good understanding of where these young kids rank.
I respect your opinions.

Assuming we swap 4 for 6(7) and GWS' first next year or thereabouts. Wonder if we could turn the latter into top twelve pick? If, Carlton bid on Liam Henry, we give Freo pick 28 and next year's first for 10. Better for them than just giving away pick 10(12) and getting low pick back. Better for us to get two top quality players now, plus 23.

I don't think any club is clamoring for 2020 picks, unless they're confident they could be top 5.

I think everyone is assuming a late first round could end up being worth a pick 20 to 22, and it could be a thinner draft. So, I guess we need to have that in mind when we're pondering possible trades.
