We're going to try very hard to bring in a top liner this off season( as we always do) , I'm just very concerned as to how much we'll offer in regards to assets to make such a deal happen.

It kind of appears like we're stuck between a rock and a hard place recently - we either pay a player that fits within our TPP structure, or seemingly over-pay for a player that isn't worth that money, though their market price is that high because the St Kilda's, Carlton's, North Melbourne's are willing to cough up for them.

If there's a good enough player in the NBA, teams will literally throw every first round pick for the next 5 years at them. I'd like to get into the draft early to get a proper talented kid, but anything pick 10 and beyond is fair game. The quality evens out very quickly.

I feel conflicted on how Hawthorn should approach the conundrum you are describing. We haven’t landed the free agents in the last couple of years but we are consistently getting A graders in the trade - Omeara, Mitchell, Scully and Wingard. The problem with that approach is we are not getting the free kick that the likes of Richmond got when they received Lynch. My concern is that our approach to free agents is the same as the approach we take with other trades - i.e a sensible contract offer and a coffee with Clarko. My view is that Hawthorn will not land another free agent of A grade quality until
We start offering a bit more than the cuppa with Clarko and a sensible contract.

FWIW, since the 2004 bonanza, Ellis, Dowler and Thorp were top 10 picks, and Birchall, Rioli, Smith, Burton were in the teens. Just sayin'.
But there is some merit to having an early pick that is not used for Finn.

Player selection in general has improved over that period of time.

Ellis was set to be a really good player before injury troubles. Dowler and Thorp we unfortunately picked for needs instead of best available and thankfully that philosophy has changed.

Although Dowler could have been a really good footballer! I used to work with his brother and the main issue with Dowler was really just poor behaviour moreso than that pelvis injury.

Are suggesting someone forced him to sign the contract?

The hysteria and conspiracy around this “Gil is paying everyone millions to stay away from Hawthorn” is frankly embarrassing to read.
What if its not everyone, but a select few and its not to stay away from Hawthorn, but to stay at the franchise ?

I would be happy to trade a future 3rd round pick for Hugh Dixon. Fremantle owe us one for giving them Hill cheaply. He has untapped potential.
I think he is contracted for next year and I’m not sure they’d let him go. I like the look of him though.

A tassie boy who was a hawk fan growing up.

Gold Coast Suns did not receive a priority pick at the pointy end of this seasons draft but receive picks in the next 3 drafts....none at the top!

Could be very relevant in this thread over the next few weeks
They get pick 1 and pick 20 this year

He’s already behind Lobb, Taberner, McCarthy, Cox and Logue. He’ll find it tough to get many games next year with Fremantle having a stack of key position players.

Pretty sure your wrong mate. They are getting picks 1, 2 and a 2nd rounder as well. They are also getting more picks next year... pick 11 in 2020 & pick 19 in 2021.

The 2019 Grand Final was the lowest TV rating since ratings have been done. If Gold Coast ever click and play GWS in a GF it will be a disaster for the AFL and their media $$$
