Not a single mention of any draftee.
Clark will play all the pre season games & will make a case to be starting 22. I think the fact that Clark is an aggressive attacking midfielder who looks to keep moving at all times, is the reason he will be an important part of our line up.

Having just Buddy and the smalls in the forward line wouldn’t be such a bad thing if our players weren’t so bloody set on bombing it 50m in the air with hack kicks. How has Horse not managed to change this? And how has he not managed to stop us being so Buddy centric?

IMO the two games where our forward line functioned at it’s best was against North at Etihad and Melbourne at the G. Both games we moved the ball quickly, and we lowered our eyes! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that that’s the best way to bring all your forwards into the game and identify the best target. And yet we did it, what, twice the whole year? We also did it in Geelong, and against the Hawks at the G, but not across four quarters.

Our players/coaches just do not learn in this area.

B: Dane Rampe, Heath Grundy, Nick Smith
HB: Jake Lloyd, Aliir Aliir, Jarrad McVeigh
C: Zak Jones, Josh Kennedy, Oliver Florent
HF: Will Hayward, Sam Reid, George Hewett
F: Tom McCartin, Lance Franklin, Tom Papley
FOLL: Callum Sinclair, Luke Parker, Isaac Heeney
I/C: Callum Mills, Harry Cunningham, Ben Ronke, Lewis Melican

It will be interesting to see how coach John Longmire handles his veterans next year, especially Heath Grundy and Jarrad McVeigh in defence and Kieren Jack, who has a fight on his hands to make this team. Dane Rampe, Aliir Aliir and Lewis Melican might be preferred ahead of Grundy, but a good pre-season is likely to see him start the year, while McVeigh's body will dictate his season. Callum Sinclair in the ruck gives the team more offence than Sam Naismith, but if Sam Reid's injury worries continue, Sinclair could go forward. Callum Mills off the bench adds to the midfield rotation in place of the departed Dan Hannebery. - Adam Curley

Would swap out Smith for Dawson or potentially Clarke but other than that it's great.

Like that he wasn't afraid to keep Jack out either.

This is kind of interesting, because you'd think that we have an eye on Clarke and Thurlow to come in right away, and there is also no room for Naismith as second ruck and then possibly Ling. That's up to 4 in's, and i can't really see who goes out. Perhaps Mcartin for Naismith, and Sinkers plays forward, and then maybe Clarke in for Papley. Then Smith and McVeigh seem most likely to be replaced by Ling and Thurlow at some stage, but probably not early in the season.

Clarke yes but barring injury I expect Thurlow will start in the 2s. I expect Reg, Macca, Jack and Smith will be more development and back up..

For improvement we need Dawson, Cunningham, COR to make their mark as best 22

Don't know if people will agree, but at this stage: Papley > Hayward > Ronke imo. Although Hayward and Ronke is a very close comparison, but I'd have Hayward marginally ahead, because as high as Ronke's highs are, he's not as consistent.

Papley was comfortably ahead of both statistically this year and struggled with injury.

I agree on all of that... what do you think in terms of ceilings?

I have a slight concern that Ronke could be a flash in the pan player.
Had 2 games with 12 goals combined, and then 16 games with 12 goals combined outside of that.
Just a thought.

2 out of 18 is still only a fraction of 1/9 and if I got 1/9 in a test I would feel like I failed.

If it makes you feel any better, in the game of life , nobody wins.

From memory after Ronke's 7 he was highlighted on the footyshow, a lot of his stats were rated in the elite category (pressure, speed, aggression, etc) but there was a huge question mark over his kicking. He doesn't seem to struggle there so he certainly has all the parts

Surely this is just off-season angst... He's a rookie, just 20 years old and in his first season... lets give him two or three more pre-seasons before we right him off as a flash in the pan.

He had at least 10 disposals in each game he played, a number of games where he laid six or more tackles and ran around in a team that had real consistency problems all year.

Hayward >> Ronke > Papley but it's close.

I think Paps will be more consistent than Ronke though.

I definitely agree that Hayward will be best... and with Ronke then Papley I think, really hard to differentiate between them maybe tied?

I'm really hopeful for Ronke and I get what you mean about consistency, but another pre-season and Buddy training with them as well as playing with them might just see him raise his ceiling a little bit more I think. Taking nothing away from Papley as I think he's great!

But the three of them and McCartin fill me with delight for the future... :D

12 goals every 16 games is an absolutely acceptable return for a veteran small forward with the sort of tackle smother etc stats he racks up. It's bloody good for a first year player.

The one concern I have with his stats is that a lot of his poor games were in loss. That being said, that is slightly alleviated, given he almost single-handedly won us the game against Hawthorn.

To a degree I see your point but when we barely kick the ball forward....what exactly is a small forward going to do?

Given he was a first year player in side decimated by injury to structural players, I'm not worried that his down games came in losses. Time and good management/development will fix that I reckon.

And while I agree he was brilliant against Hawthorn, I don't do the whole 'single-handedly' thing. No matter how well he played, he couldn't have won without the rest of the team... no-one to kick it to him for a start. No-one wins games for us on their own, not even Buddy.

yeah bit hard to kick goals when your coach pushes you up the ground constantly

Same with Papley. He had some injury woes too but I'd love to see him play a lot more closer to goals. He's a classy finisher and I want him crumbing in front of the big sticks.

Papley, Ronke and Hayshed all offer different strengths. Each is going to have cracker of games. None are one hit wonders.

Ronke franked the 7 goal game with a five goal game and other solid efforts.

Haylist franked a good first season with a better second.

Papley continues development. He's the smallest and probably the best field kick of the three. I reckon he is better forward of wing. While he is tough I think he should only pinch it in the mids.

Of the three I think Haylist should aim for a 40+ goal season next year. It would be great to a get a combined 60 from the other two.
