Analysis 2019 List, Game Plan and Best 22?

I know it probably isn't fair to judge him on the 2 games he played in 2018 but I am very much not sold on Cameron. He isn't 18 either, he should be more ready to play at an AFL level than he is, assuming he has the talent.

He has been dominating in the NEAFL. Unfortuantely the NEAFL is nowhere near AFL level. I'd want to see him get 3 or 4 weeks in a row in the seniors before making a judgement about him being up for it at AFL level, to give him a chance to adjust. On the other hand, part of me hopes we don't get to the point of needing to do that because Naismith and Sinclair stay fit and play well.

I wasn't sold on him having an AFL career before this year and I'm still iffy but I think it's uncharitable to rule him out based on his one game (not two) against Gold Coast. A debut game in which he barely played the position he had been dominating in in the NEAFL (first ruck) and rather played in a woeful forward line with no decent supply and in a team that looked as unmotivated to play a senior game as I can remember.

I think he'd be solid/serviceable (without being particularly good) as a first ruck if given a handful of games to acclimate, but that might not happen given the club loves Naismith and how well Sinclair played this year.

What I like about him is that he seems to have a good work ethic to improve his game and he never seemed to get frustrated dominating the reserves this year without getting much of a go in seniors. Speaks well to his character imo.

Naismith is Polly Farmer, Simon Madden and Dean Cox rolled into one I read on here, so wont need Cameron

If Kennedy is back to normal next year we will make the top 8 easily

If he is like this year or declines more we are farked imo
I think we need to fast track Dawson. Rearrange the defence. It worked really well with Aliir as the intercept that Mills generally takes. Mills and Jones to the mids. Jack forward or reserves. I think his disposal is getting worse if that is possible. Maybe bring Thurlow and Clarke in of they perform in the preseason?

The reorganisation of the forward-line to make it so Bud is not the focus 75%of the time is crucial. If we can get the delivery into the forward-line to only target him less than 40% of the time we will have got it right. This allows him to move up the ground and use his field kicking skills.

With Hayward developing nicely and turning into a very good marking forward and the emergence of McCartin, who will be far better after a very good preseason, we only need the crumbers to step up. Paps will be better with a full preseason and Ronke will be far better after his first season. Ronke had to get over the hard defensive tag after his heroics against the Hawks. I'm sure he has learned from that and will be better for it.

I don't mention Reid because I'm never sure if he can get on the park. He plays more than 12 games every second or third season so maybe this will be the one? Who knows? But I'm not banking on it.

Where’d you get the 2 from?

I really hope Horse reflects constructively, not on Del Santo and Dermie comments, but what is in front of his own eyes.

I thinks that’s fair and I personally think he will.

On a side note when I was coaching u17 in Western Sydney we had a number of GWS players over the time come along to run some drills etc. I was hoping to learn something from them but as it turned out they had NFI. I’d offer to get them to run the session and most of the time the best they could come up with was a straight line kicking drill or three point hands, which of course was at best our warmup.

I was a bit shocked to be honest!

In fact we have a far more talented list than Eagles. The Eagles players are a good outfit. But on talent alone we pass them by and lap them.

You're being way too harsh on the Eagles. Forward line of Darling, Kennedy & Lecras is easily the best forward line on talent alone. Defence is being managed by McGovern (3x AA) & Hurn with Barrass rising through the ranks, while their midfield contains Natinui, Gaff, Shuey & Yeo and they win the premiership with 2 of them out! They're a much more talented team than people give them credit for

I'm a bit confused with my own thoughts about how our offseason is going. I was disappointed with only recruiting Clarke and Thurlow, I thought we were in a really good position to recruit some more highly rated ready-made senior players. Then I couldn't really see how Menzel would move the needle for us because we've got Hayward already in pretty much the same role.

But the more I'm thinking about our list for next year and looking at what a best 28 or so players looks like, I'm actually starting to like what I'm seeing. It might just be an optimistic tendency of mine when it comes to football (I used to be more pessimistic until I had an epiphany that my life was far too dependent emotionally on the Swans) and there being some time and distance between how terribly the side played in the finals, but I'm starting to quite like the look of our best 22 and the players who will be kept out. I was also really pleased to hear that we're training Mitch Maguire from Canberra over the offseason and I really hope we pick him up too, I love him as a player.

So I was thinking of this as a 22 (with Menzel assumed to be on board):

Smith - Melican - Rampe
Lloyd - Aliir - McVeigh
Jones - Parker - Mills
Heeney - Franklin - Menzel
Papley - Reid - Cunningham
Sinclair - Kennedy - Hewett

IC: Florent - Clarke - Dawson - Hayward

Emer: Thurlow - Jack - Grundy - Ronke

That 22 doesn't have Ronke in it who had a really good debut year (petered off at the end), Thurlow who should be a solid/motivated player for us, or McCartin who I'd be very happy to see in the side, or O'Riordan who I desperately want in the side ASAP, or the older guys in Jack/Grundy/Naismith.

I picked Sinclair as first ruck mainly because I rate him as a better player than Naismith, but I expect Naismith will be in and Sinclair in as a forward. I wouldn't go for that though with Menzel in the side because that makes us limited in how strong our pressure is up front.

I'm not gonna pick us for a flag this year but I'd be excited to see that side play. I love that Mills, Jones and Clarke will all be in the midfield to give us more senior bodies and run, I want to see Dawson get more opportunities and Aliir to put a full season of excellent play together to prove himself as a true top-line defender.

S120 Surely and I mean surely Ronke is starting. As good as Cunningham was, if I'm choosing between the two...

Well if it was down to picking between the two as a small forward, sure I'd pick Ronke. But if it was down to the balance of this side, I'd pick Cunningham.

I put him in the pocket for no real reason, like I'm not picking Cunningham to actually play in a forward pocket in that side. You could put him on the bench in my 22 and Hayward in the pocket to avoid that confusion if you want.

Fair point. I still think Ronke is in the side. Push Heeney into the middle, and play Ronke there. Bottom line I'd rather Ronke in the side than not. He's one of our classier players personally.

That's fair, I might be too influenced by his last 6 weeks or so where I thought he was very quiet. His explosive running and tackling faded badly imo. With another pre-season hopefully he'll be better able to run out games longer into the season.

Ronke isn't the first (and won't be the last) first season player to taper off. Hayward was the same the year before.

I think our real push starts in 2020. We are shaping up, in team age demographic, for that and a ten year plan. I agree re the positioning.

I don't see any reason we cant and shouldn't win a flag next year given a reasonable run with injuries and that ounce of luck needed for a flag. . We have our first ruck back, Aliir finally recognised and played for the talent he is in his right position and some more firepower up forward. The flash kids will be matured with Mills back. Why do we need a year? For what?

Good job

Would prefer Naismith as no. 1 ruck. Sinclair playing forward.

Grundy first option too.

Reid can help break a zone with his marking.

Winning the HO to advantage will make a huge difference at the SCG.

Plenty of pressure for spots if the team stays reasonably fit
I find it hard to see Sinclair fitting into the forward line with Reid and Buddy unless we drop McCartin which I think is a step back for his development.

He's also improved to career best heights in the ruck role while Naismith has been injured. Unless there's a significant drop off in Cal's form I think Naismith and Cameron will have some limited opportunities in 2019.
