Now that GWS made a granny the afl think it's ok to dish out over the top for another area of their business. If not for the brilliance of our current admin and the maturity and toughness of our group this would be keeping us down for another 5 years.

With this the GCS are already in the discussion for any trade of elite talent which will automatically inflate the market and limit our list management. Hope it doesn't cost us that 1 elite player

I'm actually pretty pumped for the coast in some ways. They have been given the tools to sign up their mature targets this year in Greenwood, B Couch and Ellis as well as access to 4 or 5 top kids over the next couple of years with 1/2 this year and extended academy access. The glaring issue though is salary cap. Didn't they already have issues even with such a poor list? More ambassador payments incoming?

They had to overpay a lot of youngsters to keep them around, but most of them have left now. Scrimshaw for example I heard was on 400k per year. Martin leaving pays for Ellis, Ah Chee will pay for most of Greenwood, and they'd probably front-ended someone last year after the exodus.

Both the elite players we've been linked with have already publicly said no. I get the feeling we might actually be going to the draft with our picks now.

CEY is a great pickup for us. This bloke can play and if he is sound he will have be great for us. He has that big body and strength that we need. The ones who are whinging about him just let's give him that chance and I am sure that opinions will change. When Mitch Robbo came to us I was not happy and said he was no good BUT NOW - if he was not injured I reckon we would have made the Grand Final. Mitch is a fantastic player and CEY has ability to be the same. We still need a strong bodied key forward and a fast running back flanker - who knows we may have gems already in the NEAFL that may step up to the top level. Richmond is now the bench mark and we need to be that 10 to 20% better than them to win a Grand Final with the Grand Final at the MCG. All in all we still have alot of work to get there and the club is on the right track so if the progression and positivity continue we will get that success.
Kinda reminds me of Martin Pike and Blake Caracalla where we were plugging specific holes with the players we could get and that worked out ok.

I think the biggest mistake GC made was the priority players they chose. Ablett, Bock, Brennan, Rischitelli, Brennan, Harbrow, Fraser vs Ward, Davis, Scully, various other just about retired players.
Harbrow's been great for them, Rischitelli stuck around for a long time but had a lot of injuries and was pretty underwhelming otherwise.

GWS got guys that could set the club culture and guys that would be around when they contended. Left them with a manageable age gap and great leadership.
GC got guys that would have an immediate impact but were just there for the money. Left them with a massive age gap and no leadership.

That's OK, it was pretty fortunate that pyke had left the crows in such a state that so much talent was mooted to be out the door anyway. They played a Gf not too long ago and showe'd great character through their hard times, would not be that bad a place under a new coach. I just hope we don't miss on a player who, and whose family are open to a move north, because we simply cant match what the suns can

I am certainly starting to think that there will be no “Big Fish”.

I still think we are in for at least 1 more surprise yet. Certainly in a half back role best 22 to replace hodge maybe.

If for some reason we don't, i think we have the ability to develop from within. Witherden steps up to to take over the defensive general role of hodges, Answerth cements a starting spot in the back 6. Withers may be a bit scratchy for a while but i think it may be the responsibility he needs to take his game up a level (remember hodge will still be around in a coaching role). It certainly pays off for the team long term if he can. We drafted these young men, withers, clugg, berry etc to grow and take ownership of this team and they should be given every opportunity to do so.

We then need a best 22 sm defender on the bench. This may be easier to find and cheaper than shooting for an A grade instant hodge replacement like smith or laird as mentioned. We can target the skills we need like pace, run etc and get the right player for the role. We are a bit thin with depth in the sm defender area. We could maybe get 2 for the cost of a smith or laird type.

CEY makes sense need someone big in mid
Half back we need speed Rich will take over Hodge role. Someone attacking and speed off the backline is needed. If we do not trade does Bailey go back?
I think we get shown up lack of pace in back half a lot. Need someone who can chase pressure and run down people.

forwards the intersting thing glimpses in the NEAFL all year although apart for Keays nothing consistent big man wise.
we where winning by double each week no one stood up with 2-3 every week or more.

like many others not sure Big O/Martin and Mcstay can be our targets if they even mark within range only Big O I say more then 50/50 and not by much. Martin and McStay shocking kicks for goals.

jenkins not who I want not sure who.We have so many tall kids in NEAFL to trade another in

In my opinion Witherden will be fighting hard to be in our best 22 in season 2020 so allocating him as the defensive general next year is not gonna happen. My advice to Alex would be: get off social media, stay away from all camera's wherever possible, find yourself a professional running coach & concentrate 100% on lifting your running up to AFL standard.
As for a surprise in this trade period, I agree 100% that there will be a player come to us that we haven't detected on the radar yet.
