St Kilda looks set to unveil its battery of new recruits against North Melbourne in Round 1 next year.

The AFL has lined up the Saints to take on the Roos in an evenly-matched season-opener under the roof as part of the draft of its 2020 fixture.

While the league is yet to finalise the fixture and could yet make last-minute changes before releasing it later next week, the two clubs look set to start exciting new chapters under new coaches, Brett Ratten and Rhyce Shaw, against each other in their first match of the regular season.

It will be a new-look St Kilda side featuring as many as five new recruits.
The Saints are coming off a successful trade period where the club added electrifying wingman Brad Hill, tough midfielder Zak Jones, tall utility Dougal Howard, speedster Dan Butler and veteran ruckman Paddy Ryder.
Last year’s top draft pick Max Ming could also be in the frame after working his way back from a knee reconstruction.

North could also hand x-factor midfielder Aiden Bonar his first North jersey after making the move from GWS Giants in the exchange period.
After being taken pick No. 11 two years ago, the Roos picked up Bonar for a future third-round selection which former Melbourne and Sydney great Gerard Healy labelled one of the steals of the trade period.

North will get its first look at Giant Aiden Bonar against the Saints.

The Kangaroos are also slated to head to the Gabba to take on the Brisbane Lions in Round 2.

Carlton and reigning premier Richmond are again expected to kick-off the new season.

The fixture, set to be released on Thursday, has been complicated by the increase to an eight-game AFLW season, which is expected to further overlap the AFL draw.

There is a thought in some circles that the league could introduce as many as 10 Thursday night games next year, up from eight in 2019, but that appears unlikely.

The shadow cast by the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo is also understood to have shaped decision-making at AFL headquarters.

It’s understood ratings took a hit during this year’s Ashes series, with the league debating ways to minimise the drain of footy viewership during the July 24 to August 9 Games.

So true. No one said boo when the fixture was released last year. No one said anything when teams “worked out our game plan” in the first half of the season. Then everyone cried like a Scott brother once we got our players back and started winning games. If you get a chance have a listen to 5aa podcast Bickley and Rowe chatting with graham Cornes on the Monday after the grand final and Rowe trying to come up with a solution for where mcg tenants play their games. True Mensa stuff.
Incorrect. Everyone said boo over here when the fixture was released, and the full extent of Richmond's favoritism with the draw was made apparent. Then it all panned out as the AFL hoped.

Rubbish, prove it. After round one most of the minnows on here predicted we would miss finals lol

The proof was in the draw. 7 of 13 weeks at home pre-bye (which matches what an interstate team can typically expect, except that Richmond had an additional two games in Melbourne, making it 9 in total) then 7 of the remaining 9 weeks at home, again with an additional game in Melbourne, making it 8 in total, not counting finals. Name any interstate team since 1987 who has received that kind of back-end draw in ANY year? You can't, because it just hasn't happened.

If everyone was saying it.. you will have no trouble providing us a few links? With dates? Doubt it..
Give me a few days. Podcasts of Bickley and Rowe, and of Dittmar and Ricciuto should still be available on-line. There will be enough conservations and listener calls to make the point.

Maybe don’t buy a seat on the plane for a premiership cup you haven’t won yet 🤷‍♂️

Im not a fan of Thurs or Fri night games.

Think the best game of the round should be Saturday afternoon.

I prefer twilight games to whole night games.

Dont mind Sunday twilight to finish a weekend.

My ideal West Coast games would be 2pm Sat/Sun.

Ironic. The fact that I have to buy a seat on a plane for a GF is inherently the problem. While the AFL continues to bend over to Victorian interests (VFL clubs and State Government) nothing even remotely resembling fairness will result.

You can always go back to following the sanfl if you don't like our competition. Remember the sanfl, the one South Australians said was better than the vfl?

Name an interstate team that has 9 other teams in their state? You can’t, because it just hasn’t happened.

Problem with you south Australians like western Australians is that you are so insular and not used to having opposition to your opinions nor at your grounds. You also have media that operates like state run news propaganda for the 2 clubs. So it makes having a discussion with you akin to having a discussion with a citizen of North Korea.

Given that the Herald Sun article suggested North are travelling to QLD in rd 2, I would say it’s fair to suggest that North will be the home team against St Kilda in round 1.

Next year’s glamour side could start off with a dream opening 2 weeks with both games at Marvel. An away game in round 1 vs North and a home game in round 2.

I could also see St Kilda hosting that game and Norf playing two away games in a row, which then would have to lead to a team playing two home games... would probs be Richmond since the AFL love em and since they are reigning premiers. Could see Tiges host Carlton in Round 1 on the Thurs Night (obviously) and in Round 2 host Collingwood on the Thursday Night like they did this year.

Can't see us being shifted off Good Friday. Hope we are.
We played them in the first Good Friday match held by North Melbourne. Although Saints played them as well in 2018's game so really none of our clubs are truly entitled to be the ones to play. IMO out of the three that have played North on Good Friday, we are the most likely as we are no longer playing crap like in 2017/18, which is probably why we got shifted out in the first place.

AFL couldn't give a shit how you're playing.

It's crowd numbers they're interested in.
