On Poulter:
- Is he a big inside beast?
- How are his skills and speed?
- Where do we see him sitting in the draft?
- Good fit for Port?

He’s a big bodied inside mid and will become huge once he puts on more muscle. Skills are good, ability to read the play is excellent. Is slow though. He’ll be second round at this point.

He’d be an ok fit for us but i dont see how we get him

I just can’t see taj costing us anything substantial. He’s a 178cm mid who is going to have to reinvent his game at afl level who hasn’t been able to string more than 5 games in a row together since he was 16. He’s probably bid on 40+ but I wouldn’t be surprised if he went elsewhere.

so port will need a strategy for its picks around jones. Do we trade our picks up so we get a pick before a jones bid?

trade up when we are already in deficit from last year?

yea I would be working hard to couple those second rounders together. Freo’s second rounder should be around the 21 mark. Collingwood may be amenable to trading down with their NGA.

those deficit points come of our first pick, in this case that will be Port’s second rounder. If we finish top 4, that would mean a pick in the mid to late 30s. It doesn’t get put against our picks from other teams. It’s not really an issue. We have the points to match a bid on Jones if we want. And ultimately the way the system works, you can match as many bids on NGAs/Father-Sons as you have spots, you just carry a deficit until cleared.

thanks for that. Why just an ok fit for us? don’t think he could develop the power of Fyfe or Danger or running of Ebert?

who would you be looking at for Port? Thoughts on Cox as a tall defender

Too early to tell given the lack of football etc. I haven't seen enough of Cox to make an opinion yet.

Definitely no chance of Poulter becoming a Danger, he doesn't have any explosiveness at all. I can see him becoming a Kennedy type, he's more that sort of player imo

Wonder if our draft strategy has gone out the window with COVID. It originally seemed like this year was all about securing jones + schofield with more attention going to future years. Given the lack of football however - it could be a real opportunity to snag some bargains in the draft. Wouldn't be surprised if we are more active than originally expected.

Hi mish, I remember you really liking both Atley & Poholke in their draft years. Are you surprised that neither seem to have come on as you expected?
Yeah that is interesting.
Poholke I still think shows more than most of the crows midfielders. However there is no love for him at the crows. Poholke is a pure mid and the crows have not given him a run at proving that. He showed at Sanfl level last year that he can dominate a game for periods. Really should have been given the Sloan role when Sloan has been injured so that he could get games under his belt. Without games and I mean consistent games it is hard to adjust to the level.
I think a lot of this also applies to Atley. Rockliff has robbed him of game time. It is hard for pure miss to come in and have an impact straight away. This is the year they should have been forcing their way into the team but they do not have Sanfl games to make that happen. The arrival of Dursma. Butters and Rozee has taken away some opportunities in the fringes. One does feel like the club has put a line through him this year.

I reckon injuries and inside mid stocks have played a part in why we haven’t seen atley. I mean there was work to be done on his game tho but back injuries have derailed his start a fair bit imo

I wonder if he has lost any pace, was named as an emergency last week, he may be the answer (if still quick over 25-30m) to our strong, quick midfielder issue.

I would just about give him a run this week against Worpel and Mitchell, Jager is out with the broken hand.

Paddy McCartin will be an interesting one.

Apparently over his concussion issues and nominating for the draft.

195cm. 100kg. Former #1 pick.

If our medical team are happy I'd be happy to use anything from 2nd round onwards.

Either as a) a ready made replacement for Charlie when he retires.

Or b) repurposing him as the gorilla KPD we need

Interesting - going through draft profiles people were saying he played like Roughead, Fevola, Taylor Walker or Jonathon Brown. Right age profile too at 24.

You won't have to use a substantial pick on him - since he's played AFL before, he can nominate whatever contract conditions he wants.

I thought McCartin was going to be such a gun. Some of that was probably hope because he was powerful and knew how to lead unlike 90% of key forwards these days.

I suspect clubs will be to scared to give him another go. He’s a forceful sneeze away from being the biggest lawsuit this sport has ever seen.

if he misses out on the main draft, someone will rookie him.

I have the feeling this will be a quiet draft for us considering we hit the last 2 drafts pretty hard and brought in 6-7 good young kids.

Hopefully Jones and Schoefield turn out to be a good AFL players and we top up on developing KPF/KPD and i think we will be in a good position.

Our recruiters seem to pick certain drafts to have multiple picks and it seems like this is one there happy not go hard on.
