This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

I am not sure luck has anything to do with it. We are just not that good.

We make ill informed decisions again and again, then blame luck.

Carlton having Kennedy at the time was nothing but dumb luck for West Coast really.

That doesn’t excuse dumb calls by us. I’m just stating the acquisition of Kennedy the way I see it.

Interesting

Hey Matt. Do you think fremantle will now be targeting a key forward? With Hogan wanting to get to GWS could we package a second rounder and hogan for a pick between 10-15?

Think Dockers will be happy with what they have, already got a number of talls. I don't reckon Hogan's trade value is very high.

Sounds like the opinion of someone who knows sweet FA.

Talls are harder to pick at the elite end in the draft because they might be elite in age comps due to physical advantages that are then reduced once they get to the AFL/open comps.

Not only not such a big fish in a small pond, they've potentially missed the need to develop more strings to their bow and not had that competitive edge level exposed fully to recruiters.

Fremantle's talls:
Lobb 206cm \ Meek 203cm \ Darcy 202cm (pick two of these)
Pearce 201cm
Taberner 198cm
Hogan 195cm
Cox 195cm
Hamling 194cm
Logue 193cm

Mundy/Fyfe/Acres/Sturt

8x (plus a spare ruck) key tall positions before the medium forwards/midfielders

The problem is though that we only have 2-3 Key forwards with Hogan gone. I generally think that Brennan Cox plays far better football as a defender.

The issue is we don't have the key forwards for either three talls in the side or enough depth to cover an injury to either Lobb or Taberner.

If we are going to play two tall forwards plus either Sturt/Fyfe in that tasty marking mobile medium (Mmm) role then we need a depth option.

I think Cox is that option. Hamling/Logue/Pearce as the two to three defenders, Cox as depth there so he probably starts the season back, then with two injuries to the defenders Cox becomes full time back.

If we think three tall forwards works then we need a mature body for that role, if we think more mobile marking options with two key forwards is better then I don't think we want a mature body getting paid big cash watching.

So we should draft a project player this season with the expectation that he will fill a hole forward if Cox is covering holes in defense already. So a third choice option for us, so can be a talented skinny kid who needs two years in the gym because if he is playing then it means we are missing three first choice talls already and our season is probably already cooked.

I reckon the current forward set-up (sans Hogan), health permitting, could be maximised by strategy (assuming Longmuir & Co have an edge here) to compete well in regular season against similarly placed teams and more unsuspecting top 6 opposition. It'd be a much tougher job to do (and much more unlikely) in finals and especially the deeper in finals you go.

Where are we going to get a JK or Hawkins type forward from? There are none, bar maybe Lynch. Who is someone else we don’t have. And I’m pretty sure they aren’t among the myriad of different items stocked at Aldi.

Actually, you could probably get a key forward by going to the Key Forward Tree and giving it a hard shake. One is bound to fall out. You have those kinds of trees in Aus, don't you?

Basically none of us have any idea. It's all rumours until any of the involved clubs make a statement.

The rumours range from 'meh' - Cedric Cox/Narkle, to 'logical' Phillips/Mihocek to 'wishful' - Clark/Menegola to 'fanciful' - Patty Cripps.

We need to run a combine for graduating college basketballers. Tight Ends also welcome.

You don't know of any gyms we can hire do you?
