This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

Dont see why Chapman of all kids is a pipedream.

Every year players fall further then everyone thinks, he's not even clearly projected to go before our pick.

Could easily be at our pick, would be one of the most unbalanced lists in the league picking up another tall defender but he looks like he'll be a good player

There’s a premium on future selections this year. Swapping our second in 2021 for GC pick 37 this year sounds horrible! Ugh.
GC would be laughing at us if we did that
2021 2nd for 27 and 37?
2021 3rd for 37?
2021 3rd for 37 and swap future 4ths?
Is that more on the money?
Just thinking of ways to get hands on 37, but yeah I see how bad that original trade suggestion was looking back now. >.<
I do think Bell/Walls would get us back into the 2nd or 3rd round next year if we traded one of them out.

(But I did also suggest future 3rd for 37 as a possibility. That would be late 40s. But yeah, I guess still not a great deal for us.)

Future 3rd for 37 would be more in the ballpark. A future second could well end up as pick 24 or so next year in a very strong draft

RE: Chapman.. Given it has come from 2x sources the last few days, Is this the club playing around, getting it out there that we're into chapman, so perhaps someone else falls?
Doesn't fit needs, unless they think he can play forward like Naughton.

I was thinking this. Why would the club give any inkling to twomey who we are after? But I also don't understand how we knew carlton would bid on henry so far out.

I'm sure the guy can play but I'll be pretty flat if we pick Chapman. It isn't remotely consistent with our messaging or what I think we need.
Duffield and McArdle were chatting about Chapman being very viable as a big bodied mid with his ability to accumulate and athletic traits apparently what the recruiters believe to be the case.

Absolutely, he has all the attributes to develop into a mid. He's a really good character too.

I voted for Oliver but wouldn't be at all disappointed if we pick Chapman.

He's one of the safest bets at our pick.

You have to remember with the draft, you’re rarely filling an instant need, you’re filling a potential list need in 2 - 4 years time. That’s how long it takes for most draftees to become a solid AFL level player (if they ever do).

If Chapman is available at our pick and he’s considered the best talent available by our recruiters then I’d hope we pick him and I think we would. The fact that he’s local and seems a great young person would make it even more silly not to take him at the aforementioned scenario.

Anyway, there’s a good chance the discussion is all academic - he may not even be available by the time our pick comes unless we trade up.

I’m not sure why some on here wouldn’t like Chapman?
He could project as anything- junior positional play is just the beginning of a players development... he can footy.
Great reader of play, pace off the mark, safe and sound kick, breaks the lines - awesome size - he looks like the least one dimensional player available at our pick- could be anything....
If our recruitment and development crew see him as the pick at 12 then I’ll back them in. He is a jet.

Persuasive comments.

Also, Jordan Clark was drafted as a defender
2018 DRAFT ANALYSIS: "A composed medium defender who reads the play brilliantly and is an excellent distributor."
He's now considered to be a midfielder. I think everybody would have been happy if we had given our first pick for him in a trade this year.

Well it's not necessarily good form to telegraph our intentions prior to a draft...

I don’t disagree players need 2-4 years, esp talls...
BUT at the start of the 2023 season, our forward line set up is getting close to dire.
Possible (tallish) forwards (not even necessarily KPFs) -
Mundy’s retired,
30-year-olds Taberner and Lobb,
31-year-old Fyfe.
No Hogan, no McCarthy (both of whom will be 28 - not that I’m saying we should have kept them, but just as an example that they would have been in a better age bracket).
Sturt may or may not get on the park, but if he gets healthy, he’ll be 23.

If we want 2-4 years development, then we have to manufacture a tall forward from SOMEWHERE by next year at the latest, or else we’re screwed all over again, and it’s back to the drawing board.

Guys like Brayshaw, Cerra, Serong, Young, etc will be entering their prime - are they going to want to hang around for another rebuild?

Screw Hogan and McCarthy for being ****-ups, and screw Dixon for being a lazy bastard. 🤬🤬

Chapman's athletic, can find the footy and kicks it well from what I saw. There's no reason he can't play further up the ground.

Mundy was recruited as a defender as well and we successfully got him playing up the ground. Mundy should mentor him if we do pick him up.

Kinear Beetson the Swams list Manager said the other day that if he was going to bid on JUH that he would give the WB List Manager a call to let him know first and that he would expect the same. My take was that this courtesy was limited to first rounders though.
