Pick 7 or 8 to me is overs for papley so unless we target a gun mid I think it’s a big chance we split the pick like last year and target 2 of the the cats 3 first rounders and if one of those isn’t good enough for papley I hope we walk away and focus on speed through halfback and midfield.

Has it been confirmed McGovern is out of contract ? All I’ve seen is a Sam Edmund article saying he was however a lot of reporters just go off footywire which isn’t always accurate, I have a vague memory of barass stating he was getting a 4 year deal when we were recruiting him, offering a player a 2 year deal that your trying to recruit seems unders in years for me, I hope it was 2 years but I’d be backing barass with 4 years.

I too recall a 4 year deal being mentioned. There's little chance McGovern is out of contract. He'll be here next year, no doubt.

With the retirements of Kreuzer and Gibbs, I would like us to rip the band-aid off and rid ourselves of all links to the loser past.

Murphy, Simpson, Betts, Casboult, thank you all, goodbye. Barker too.

No more. No player/coach who was there before Cripps (other than Curnow, who is still playing at a very high standard).

Live and die by the current list.

The path from here will depend more than anything on instilling self-belief in the playing group. An interesting question would be whether people see us improving if we were to take the same players plus draftees into next year (No trades, no FA)?

It’s possible we’d see improvement, it’s also possible we have a similar season to this one. I don’t trust that the current group can develop the self-belief required to make finals - and from where we’re coming from, it’s an incredibly heavy burden for the players. We may call this season a middle of the road finish - in reality, it’s borderline middle of the road; close enough to a fail. We have a ‘loser’ mindset - no two ways about it. It’s also no surprise given the state of affairs for the best part of 20 years (and another reason why I wouldn’t mind retiring all players from that era).

I think things will change very quickly if we can get things right between the ears. There is no guarantee that it will come with Williams, Paps, Graham etc but certainly worth a shot ... there is no guarantee that it will come by bringing in winning veterans from other clubs (also worth a shot, imo) .. there are no guarantees in any approach at all.

Until it is sorted, I fear we really will be stuck in ‘middle of the road’ territory. When it turns (even if 2021), the sky is the limit.

In reality it will probably be Kreuze, Betts and possibly Barker gone. I think Murph, Simmo and Levi will all get another year. Having said that I think they would all play maybe half to two-thirds of the season in the seniors as we transition them out. Levi could be important in allowing us to rotate the two young ruckmen in and out of the side, neither of them is ready to play week in , week out.

Pretty sure Murphy has got a contract for next year

Simmo seems to be covering the ground well for his age....depends who we can recruit to take his place

Betts is 100% cooked

Levi won’t get much game time for us if we have our full compliment to choose from

Barker should have been moved on at the end of 2015

Really like that idea.

We still need half a dozen starting 22 players to really push toward finals contention.

We need a Saad, Smith, Stringer type trade period, turning our first and second into three very good players.

No point getting rid of McGovern? Heard it all now!

How about sending a message to the list and recruits that no matter what we pay for you, your relationship with the coach or how you come in, if you don't perform you don't stay! If he really is out of contract and we resign him, then I do have serious concerns for the future of the Club. Same as if we give Eddie and Simmo new contracts.

Delist/Retire:
Lang
Betts
Simpson
O’Dwyer
Goddard
Moore
Owies
Macreadie

Trade:
Dow
Casboult
O’Brien
Marchbank
Murphy

we need a semi rebuild. I don’t think finals are on the cards until we get our lost balance right and our coaching panel sorted. A lot can happen quickly but we need to be ruthless with this list. If they aren’t contributing or have value get them out now.
Wow, that's a bad take. Do you really think we'd move on 13 players? That would destroy the list. You try replace 13 guys in one off season. Impossible.

In addition, who would trade for Murphy?

TDK - Should now be 1st ruck.
Docherty - not back at AA form but he improved the side being back
Newnes - been a v handy pick up ... bit underrated

That’s 7 that have improved the team ...

Cripps has been down on last year but still playing at a higher level than most .... Ed Curnow is just a consistent year in year out player & Liam Jones down back wins more than he loses

Williamson McKay Fisher have been ok at times and touch Wood will go next level 2021 .... Fisher needs to be pushed up the ground

hopefully C.Curnow / Marchbank return

on the veterans ....

Newman to comeback and replace Simpson.

Murphy would be disappointed if he is played midfield in front of SPS and Fisher next year

Betts / Casboult both had good games early but have fallen away ... not sure there is a true fwd pocket to replace Betts or a key position / 2nd ruck to replace Casboult .... so maybe they stay

if the Blues are to play finals next year ... another quality mid is the no.1 priority / and a quick goal kicking fwd pocket

I'd be including Gibbons on the list of improved players, he's been very good for us.

serious question do we re-sign mcgovern?

he's not AFL standard in most areas. it's pretty simple.

he's holding up development of JSOS, TDK and potentially Kemp in that 3rd tall role. He's also no better on game-day than any of the 3 mentioned. But due to his salary and what we gave up for him in a high-profile trade, there's no doubt a pressure to play him and get the best out of him.

I'd rather see him off the list tbh. Sigh of relief for plenty involved. Mark that trade down as a loss and move on.

Whilst I’d love to trade Gov as I don’t think he’s up to it and a whole heap of other reasons, to suggest he’s holding up the development of our number 1 ruckman is a bit crazy, to suggest he is or will stifle Kemp’s development who no where has been mentioned as a third tall forward is also a bit of a stretch.

Agree on SOS I’m not sure how they both play and it does seem that Gov is getting some special treatment that he doesn’t deserve, it would have been interesting if SOS had not have been injured to see how they worked it out.

He can stay. He is AFL quality and he has the potential to be an important part of our side.

That doesn’t mean he needs to play ones every week and it doesn’t mean he has justified his contract. Hopefully a pay cut and some performance based incentives will give him the kick in the ass he needs.

100% agree with this.

On the retirements, I’d much prefer we stagnate them over the next 2-3 years.

Simpson did alright today and is still earning his spot in the 22 unlike some. Should be retained, at worst he provides some reliable depth and can be a good mentor at Preston. Murphy got a contract for similar reasons.

Sadly for Eddie it looks like next week will be his last and he should be phased out this offseason.

ECurnow can play as long as he wants as far as I’m concerned.

Unsure where I sit on Cas. He’ll be on the list in 2021 but I wouldnt mind looking at someone like 2MP to replace him if all he’s going to be is depth.

Can’t see Barker being let go while Cain Liddle is the boss, dare I say it possible conflict of interest?

Reported during the Swans game tonight that Papley's management have said he's staying at the Swans so you don't need to worry about that trade involving your first rounder.

We understood that McGovern got a 4 year deal on nearly $800k a season! He's very big on KFC but not much related to playing footy, chooses when to turn up
