Just thinking.....Will our Northern Blues be competitive this year?
I'm going to list our first 22 side, take five players away accounting for injuries and hold-overs for the main squad and see what comes about.

Simpson Jones Plowman
Docherty Weitering SPS
Kreuzer Cripps Murphy
Walsh Setterfield Newnes

Martin CCurnow Cuningham
Betts McKay McGovern
ECurnow Newman Fisher Casboult
EMG: JSilvagni Dow Williamson Marchbank Gibbons

Cottrell Goddard BSilvagni
Lang Macreadie Polson
Pittonet Kennedy Philp
O'Brien Stocker Ramsay

O'Dwyer TDK Phillips
Owies Kemp Honey
NB players: 1, 2, 3 & 4

Looks to me as though the NB's are going to be in for a tough year.
It doesn't help losing the likes of Fisher, Anderson & Palmer either.

I actually think both sides will improve

Really interesting discussion about the backline. Firstly if Marchbank can improve his defending by 10-20% it would make things a hell of a lot easier. Secondly if we play Doc, SPS, Simpson, Newman and Marchbank (alongside Weitering, Jones and Plowman who are the main lockdown defenders)

I am comfortable with Marchbank's defending.

I am more concerned about his 'attacking'...

Overlooked defender Ryan Sturgess is set to start training with Carlton this month in a bid to win the last spot on the club's list.
The Blues have opened a position after placing first-year utility Brodie Kemp on the long-term injury list as he recovers from a knee reconstruction, allowing the club to add a replacement player via the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period before the season begins.

Carlton is likely to also trial others in the coming weeks for the spot. It can also choose to hold the place open and fill it in in the mid-season draft, which is expected to be held mid-week after round 11.

I think they replaced the likes of Fisher, Anderson & Palmer quite well. I'd imagine their best side would contain more NB players too as the one you have is way too young. Wilson, Keppel, Blakey, Hill, Johnson, Collins, Penrith, O'Rourke, Stavrou, Cunico, Hirst and Bartholomeus should all get plenty of games this season.

I see Goddard, Silvagni, Macreadie, Kieran Collins and Alex Johnson as being a fairly decent VFL tall defender stockpile. Ben will probably need to go forward.

Pittonet with TDK relieving is a really good ruck combo at this level.

There aren't many there I particularly like.
Wilson is a terrier and will provide grunt, but he's not really an effective distributor and other than Blakey at times and Johnson likely, there isn't anyone else there particularly worthy of mention.

The new guys though - Wait and see.
Just feel the squad is looking very light on.

Hill, Collins, Hirst, Johnson and Cunico have been in AFL systems at least. Some of the more mature players should be getting games ahead of our 18 year old rookies. Although, I don't know where the players who miss the NB team get to ply their trade. Do we have an agreement that all of our squad have to play VFL as a minimum?

The review is from Knightmare. Sounds like a solid player.

Ryan Sturgess (VIC)
Height, Weight:
190cm/80kg
Profile: Tall flanker who can play in defence or up forward. Sturgess takes on games with his run, possesses speed, a damaging kick and the strength to take one-on-one marks.

Best mates with Philp.

I've read accounts of him being a strong intercept mark. We seem intent on having great readers of the ball in flight all over the ground.

He has speed and agility. Simo replacement?

Reckon we have a few who can replace Simmo now. He's more of a free hit.

I'd feel for Webb though. Maybe Charlie is an LTI too?

I'm a fan of Webb, I like he's aggression but will he get a game. I still think we need small forwards even will Betts and Martin we are a bit short on depth. IMO Sokol could come into our side and have an impact this year. I also think Jai Jackson would be a good pick to develop under Betts and to take over from him. Review from Knightmare.

Ben Sokol (WA)
Height, Weight:
184cm/88kg
Profile: The goalkicking medium forward won the Simpson Medal for best on ground in the WAFL Grand Final, kicking six goals. Sokol was the WAFL's leading goalkicker, kicking 60 goals from 20 games while also taking a competition high 166 marks.

Jai Jackson (WA)
Height, Weight:
185cm/81kg
Profile: An aggressive ball winner and tackler through the midfield and up forward, Jackson wins a high proportion of his ball in contested situations. Jackson is one of the drafts most competitive and hits the scoreboard.

Don't think we need any more medium forwards. We have Jsos, Kennedy, Mcgovern & Martin who can all play that role. Jai Jackson has issues with skill and decision making. Need to ensure we target players with good skill level and decision making.

Jesus.

In how many times and how many ways can an argument been misquoted, misappropriated, and strawmanned over the course of a day?

I'd dearly love for someone to point out precisely where and when, in my post history, I suggested interchanging people from the back six/seven for those out of the squad for the purposes of matchups. Never said it.

I'd also quite enjoy it if people would say precisely who misses out for Marchbank if he's in the team, because that's the nuts and bolts of my argument; purely, that he doesn't have a role at present that another player isn't better at.

It isn't because he can't play small, or because he's shit, or any of the other things people have assumed I'm saying, either. People need to actually read the posts others write a bit more.

****ing hell.

******* hell.

You know what this joint is like G....

I think you have to look further than that...and again - For every action there's a reaction.
If Marchbank doesn't fit for instance, you don't want to then be 'creating' a new role for him further up the ground.

One has to look at the whole and if speed is suited against opponent x on a particular day, pick the team that meets that requirement.
I agree with Teague in that our first 30 players all have a right to be involved...so why not involve them when and as, required?

I can see a role for him on the wing. He is a great mark, has great run, and could play that marking release player out of the backline. Better that he plays on the wing in the seniors , than spending time in the NB's waiting for an injury to Weitering, Jones etc
