Ok I will have a go at this game .
Are you Jayson Daniels or Clint Jones 😀
I'm too young to have seen Daniels play, but at least CJ gave it absolutely everything week in, week out. I was only in it for the pie and coke after the game.

What is the distance of a kick for a mark at present? 15m 10m or 5m {a lot of marks are paid having travelled 9m or less].

And why are they paid that distance from where the player kicks it? Surely it should be from where the mark was given, so rightfully 10m or 9 from the man on the mark..... or do I just go and crawl back into my cave?

Hearing there are a lot of nervous players but also a lot of happy players. Make of that what you will.

Oh yeah i know mate, but the guy on the mark is instinctively going to go lateral when Buddy hooks around - automatic 50 to Franklin.

Paving the way for the next new rule. Anyone who's name has the initials LF who gets the ball in the forward half, is automatically awarded a goal.
More goals make the game more exciting right?

it doesnt make any logical sence why this rule has come to be ... if we apply this rule to every after the siren kick on goal in the history of the game every single one of them is now a 50m penalty... for what doesnt impact the player kicking in the slightest ... the penalty does not seem reasonable to the crime... its just like that interchange gate infringment rule they brought in where if a player steps over the yellow line painted on the grass to enter play in stead of going around it its a free kick and 50m penalty .. for a one step short cut ...

these reak of rule changes to justify the employment of certain people when we have the clubs having to delist players to lower list sizes and players taking a pay cut to carry the load of the impact of COVID why are we still paying (what i assume would be a healthy pay packet) these clowns who are just making ill thought out changes that make minimal impact to the flow of the game but make the officiating of the game harder more complex and more devisive ....

I agree, the changes are pretty crappy ... maybe we need to go full Outlander on Hocking, and give the umpires some slack - they can only eat the $h1t sandwich he serves up to them ...

For mine, the 50 metre penalty should be a 30 metre penalty - in most cases 50 is too much, but the old 15 too little.

I'd like to see players required to be inside 50 at stoppages (not necessarily in the square, but take them out of the congestion.

Mixed views on the idea of a "last touched" kick rule between the arcs - it's semi-logical on the surface, but is just going to encourage players to let the ball run out for the turnover, rather than encourage a contest to keep the ball in-play - rules which discourage taking possession, or engaging in a contest for the ball, end up being exploited, usually in a way which is detrimental to the fan experience. I've always loved being down near the fence when there's 4 or 5 players desperately trying to keep the ball in-play, then popping it out to the inside and having an attack triggered by it.

I'd be OK with a rule that if a player with the initials MK contests a ball within 30m of goal, St Kilda get an automatic 6 points ...

But does the timer start from when the player marks it, or pushes back off the mark? If it’s when the mark is taken then that is actually no time at all to make a decision and get a decent kick away without trying to kick around the corner or kicking off a step.

Given that our player is taken down after the mark about 60% of the time and has a player sitting on him for 3-4 seconds, they'll call play-on, holding the ball, and 50 against for backchat 20 times a game ...

We've constantly been making changes to the game for over 100 years. Not not make chanfes would actually go against tradition.

It sounds like the basis for a PhD in how footy tends to towards ever increasing complexity when all people want is some chips, a pie and to understand the rules from one season to the next. Chuck it up next to some quantum physics and it writes itself.

I don't mind these new AFL rules. Should get the game moving and open up space. Will suit the Saints high scoring game.

Going to be super frustrating to watch how each umpire interprets movement from the man on the mark. Rekon it will take half a season for players to settle down but even then there will be some seriously unlucky players getting penalised.

If they wanted to speed the game up then stop players from standing over the ball or holding on to arms/legs when "trying to stand up" after a contest. How about the smart arses that loop the ball 15m in the air when passing it back after a free kick? So many little BS tactics to slow down the game.

Will be interesting to see if teams try to exploit the mark as a tactic.

Knowing that player can't move laterally opens up the seagull handball to a running player for a longer kick. Could see the Shane Savage style 65m set play come into vogue.

That will then force teams to fill more space at the half forward line...

Which will lead to more congestion...

Slowing down games...

Lowering scores...

Brilliant.

I can't see how anyone can be outraged by the rule changes, they are pretty minimal.

I'm not outraged by any measure ... the THEORY is nice, but it's going to depend on how it's called, week-in-week-out, and we know from the other subjective rules, that the umpires have far too much on their plate, and we never fix the existing problems.

I do believe that these rules, in general, favour us, particularly if our players maintain peak fitness. We have so many potential goalkickers around the ground that a rotation of players resting in a pocket, while Battle, etc., roam up the ground works very nicely for us. And we just know Hill is going to be running past at every opportunity.

I do like the idea of forcing players back inside the 50 for stoppages in general play (heck, even a restriction on players inside 50 for those stoppages might be an idea. But it needs to be done properly, with a proper set of cameras and realtime review. It's clear, easy to understand, easy to communicate to the players (ie, if it's in our attacking half, our 3 key forwards go in ... if it's defensive side, our best 3 defenders go back), and not subject to vagaries of interpretation

They also need to fix the review system with better cameras ... right now it's an ongoing bad joke, and might as well just go back to umpires call as the default.

You really wouldn't want to be umpiring this game ... hell, I almost feel some sympathy for the umps ...
