Can anyone explain to me the mechanics of de-listing and then re-listing CEY?

Does his OG contract end and he enters into a new one? Why not pay him out and take another pick to the draft?

Essentially, why do they de-list and then re-list?

Moving them to the rookie list we get to keep the player on for one more year so their original contract terms are fulfilled and we get to move $80k of their salary outside the cap. We don't break the contract, player gets everything they were entitled to with a chance to keep playing and we get a discount on their remaining salary.

I know what you mean about paying out and taking another player, I tend to think that is probably more beneficial from a club standpoint. I guess the argument in favour of re-listing a senior player is there's some slight cap relief and a developed player for depth rather than paying out the full salary for nothing and then paying another draftee's salary on top of that.

I'd probably still take the extra draftee over a player that is almost certain to be delisted once more and for good but I guess if the player drafted is gonna be a late pick and a long shot anyway the mature body probably more valuable.

I now LemmingMaster is a fan of his might be willing to put in his thoughts.

On the night I was disappointed that Bazzo didn't quite make it to us but there is no guarantee he would have been taken anyway.

I am completely with you on the Bazzo call, not sure why a team is letting him slip down so far. Gibcus is going off the board up high and you have someone like Bazzo drifting way down, that is a bargain in my eyes.

Tunstill was a little quiet bandwagon of mine and it was based on glimpses of talent.

Positives
- Elite inside work for someone of a slight frame, when you compare him to a Sheldrick and Co....
- Gets his hands free when tackled and stands up in the tackle, seems to have great core strength and great at getting the ball out of a contest.
- Reads the ball drop nicely

Negatives
- Lacks ability to create space
- Low production numbers due to being inside midfielder thoughts first
- Lack of versatility, not sure he can play anywhere other than inside midfielder, currently.
- I never really noticed his kicking, for bad or good. Hard to really tell how bad he will be under more pressure.

For a late round pick, he has traits to build on, just can he work around his downside.

I will be certainly watching him closely as he's a personal favourite.

I was kinda hopeful we would trade next year's first rounder into this year but the more I think of it the better it was to keep it. Assuming we don't trade it for a player next year we'll almost certainly try to trade it into a 2023 first rounder. Assuming we do we should end up with enough points to cover the Ashcroft bid and two 2023 first rounders. Assuming Ashcroft goes top 3 that leaves us in a great position to then trade back into the 2022 first round for a high quality KP we like. Supposed to be plenty available. Or keep them and double dip in 23.

Good Preston blood in Wilmot, too, so that's a plus.
Excuse the intrusion but I come in peace to wish this kid the very best.
I played against his Father who was an absolute gun and maybe the toughest hardest player in the notoriously tough Diamond Valley competition there was.
Grant was lost too young and I genuinely wish Darcy the best in his career and will follow his fortunes closely.

What you thought of the players we picked up after attending the draft night and getting an insight into the recruiters thoughts behind the players.
We didn't get an insight in to how the recruiters rate players, or what they're specifically looking for when they watch kids. It was basically these are the two kids we're hoping to get, and this is the list of kids between and just after "our" two kids. Nor was there much discussion about why we zeroed in on Wilmot or Lohmann specifically, what made them stand out from the other kids around the mark, or of a similar type.

There was a bit of discussion about what would we do if a slider fell to our first pick. So we focused in on Hobbs and Gibcus, and whether we would choose either of them over Wilmot. We were told we would select Wilmot ahead of Hobbs, but were left wondering if we would go Gibcus or Wilmot if they were both there. The recruiter in the room appeared himself to be leaning towards Gibcus, but questioned whether Conole would move away a needs based pick.

I know very little about any draft class. I have my favourites every year, and tend to watch them the most, and of course I see a few other kids while watching the kids I like. The NAB League app is garbage for watching games. The sooner they go back to live YouTube streams, the better. I couldn't give you an opinion of Lohmann or Tunstill.

I said early in the year that Wilmot was a Lions type player, a kid the club would value pretty highly because of his defensive traits. I don't know if Wilmot has the scope to play midfield down the track. I feel his best position will be halfback. We have drafted a decent flank now over the last two drafts with Wilmot, Sharp and Lohmann now running up down one side of the field.

We drafted a halfback, a medium forward and an inside mid. All with pace and the ability to play defence and offence. They're all medium to long term kids, though Wilmot could play early, similar to Harry Sharp.

It was interesting to hear that we had Tunstill at 25 on our list. He wasn't discussed by any of the draft watchers at all during the year, didn't appear on anyones list or rankings from memory. He does have the profile and athletic attributes of the type of inside mid I believe we need on our list. He just appears to be pretty raw, and to be a longer term project player. I do like the selection, as by our third pick there was barely anyone left on board I really liked for the Lions.

As I mentioned previously, the recruiter at the Brisbane function said we wouldn't be looking for a midfielder this draft, unless some one we really rate slid to our third pick.

Very interesting that we had Tunstill at 25. From my extremely limited vision he does have a fair bit to like. Has a ball winner's instincts and is really good at getting his arms in a position to release the footy constructively. Will need to get a lot stronger to do that at AFL level but he looks like he has a frame that will fill out well to me. Covers the ground pretty well too. Time in the gym and Neale to tutor him and we might have a decent mid on our hands.

Something else the recruiter mentioned was that after next season, lists and the salary cap might return to pre-covid numbers. That the last two trade periods were really constrained because every clubs list and salary cap were tight, but next trade period should be pretty active again.

This will potentially mean we don't have to delist many players for list spots to take to the national draft, and that we could potentially have a couple of rookie list spots for academy kids.

Do you know whether Harry Taylor is apart of our academy for next year? His size might really limit him but he's so quick and agile and his kicking off both feet is really impressive.

We surely anticipated the return to/rise of the salary cap with us balancing our payments and not asking our players to take an additional pay cut. We'll be really well placed to bring in a decent player through trade/FA. Good news if list sizes return to normal too. Having to only delist 2-3 players and then have 5-6 spots would be great.

Where is this rating information?

Lions had two draft functions, one in Brisbane on the first night, one in Melbourne on the second night. We were told the clubs rankings of players. Heavily influenced by club needs, as well as interviews, kids who are likely to stay, etc.

Cal Twomey already asking can we have a 2022 draft thread ;)

And yes he says Will Ashcroft is a possible top pick

Feels pretty good to get a top tier pick in a manner you know there will be no contention or argument about. I will need buckets if we manage to win the flag and have him coming in.

It would be mighty nice to win a Premiershup and then get a number 1 pick for points value only.

Same as this year.

I don't remember the early ratings of the draft but even so that bodes well considering how many more KPs there are next year than this.

I don’t really see how we can trade our first next year into 2023 and still have enough points for Ashcroft, to be able to then trade back into 2022 for a highly rated tall without trading someone out next year to get the points required.
Unless if we are prepared to take a hit on the first round points the year after.

Assuming we win the flag we'd need roughly 700 points after our first three picks value are taken into account. Basically needing to trade in pick 28. Even if Ashcroft does manage to go no 1, which I kinda hope he doesn't, we should able to find those points with trading our first into 2023.

Here’s an early look at next year’s draft crop from the draft board, from RMC’s PMBangers.

Early disclaimer, this is just my top 22 for next years crop early on, so some positions are iffy at best!

FB: Sam Gilbey (Claremont/ WA), Jedd Busslinger (East Perth/ WA), Jonti Schuback (Gippsland Power/ VIC C)

Gilbey is a speedy rebounding defender out of Claremont, with a piercing left foot out of defence, his attacking flair from the back half puts him in a position to transition into a Wing long term, standing at 185 cm, he's a nice height to play on a range of opponents, but his style forces them to defend him moreso than him doing the defending. Busslinger is a classic intercepting tall defender, not too dissimilar to Rhett Bazzo from this year, but I'd argue more damaging with his disposal and more willing to push up the ground, the 195 cm East Perth product will have his work cut out for him at the champs next season with the strength of the tall forwards. Jonti, otherwise known as 'The Jont', is another smooth mover like Gilbey, but is arguably better on the wings or in the thick of things as a rover, also possessing a damaging boot and speed.

HB: Kobe Ryan (West Adelaide/ SA), Harry Barnett (West Adelaide/ SA), Jed Hagan (East Fremantle/ WA)

Ryan is 100% better as a midfielder, but due to not many others in the side being able to play multiple positions (or rather, not showing that versatility) he's forced onto the half back line, where his class and poise under pressure are still valuable weapons when forced back here that he utilises to full effect. There's a bit of the Pendlebury's to Ryan, with his movement smooth but looking more so due to read of the game than athleticism. Barnett is 202cm and has played mainly ruck and forward, but at his height he's got sublime skills and athleticism that may see him turn into a successful Key Defender. Regardless, his ability to get around the ground and impact in all phases of the game is invaluable for a big man. Hagan is very much a 'performance' selection here, having made the WA U19s team and holding his own it's hard to deny that he's got more exposure than most, however I expect he may drop quickly next year =(

C: Elijah Tstatas (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC M), George Wardlaw (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC M), Oliver Hollands (Murray Bushrangers/ VIC C)

Arguably 3 of the best 4 mids heading into next year, all three of these guys have shown their capabilities as inside and outside players with genuine game sense. Elijah is an athletic beast with his acceleration around stoppages a massive weapon of his, paired with his damaging kick he looms as a genuine Pick 1 candidate early. Wardlaw is also in that same calibre of player, but a much stronger contested player with a real strength of his being his repeat efforts, inside consistency and the ability to stand up in tackles, and that's no joke, the RookieMe Central team were discussing last night and concluded we'd never seen Wardlaw brought to ground before disposing of the ball. Hollands is the brother of the SUNS' Elijah, with athleticism and class being key features of his game.

HF: Jack O'Sullivan (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC C), Will Elliott (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC M), Harry Sheezel (Sandringham Dragons/ VIC M)

O'Sullivan is exactly the type of small player that I love, so early disclaimer that I may be overrating him all of 2022, but as a forward he's a pressure machine that knows how to use it going forward as well, there's not many tackles he goes for that he doesn't lay and when rotated through the midfield he's a contested ball magnet as well. Elliott is a super athletic tall, which is looking to be a theme next year, who can play ruck but looks much more at home as a forward, where he can impact well at ground level and aerially for his height. Sheezel is similar to Rachele from this years draft, but slightly taller and I think with a little stronger workrate, but a similar flair in the forward 50 and knack for doing miraculous things

FF: Elijah Hewett (Swan Districts/ WA), Harry Lemmey (West Adelaide/ SA), Mattaes Phillipou (WWT Eagles/ SA)

The premiere tall heading into next season, Lemmey is a lead up specialist with his arm span and ability to mark in front at full speed allowing him to beat most opponents with ease when given the space to lead into, with his follow up shot at goal super impressive for a junior, already having a well defined routine. Phillipou is a super athletic medium forward that runs through the midfield well, it's very much a speculative pick having him this high early on, but I think he's got a lot of similar traits to a guy like Calen Poulter. Hewett has done the majority of his damage as a big bodied inside ball winner for WA, but at club and PSA level has had some impressive stints up forward, and he still manages to hit the scoreboard when playing through the guts.

R: Jackson Broadbent (Peel Thunder/ WA), Will Ashcroft (Sandringham Dragons/ VIC M), Jhye Clark (Geelong Falcons/ VIC C)

Broadbent is undoubtedly a big prospect, and whilst he may not have the athleticism of other ruck options next year he already looks like a guy that could be considered a safe bet to make it as a number 1 ruck at the next level, early on he reminds me a bit of Jarrod Witts, but I feel Broadbent is more mobile. Ashcroft will be spoken about plenty as a top end father-son, but he does pretty much everything as a midfielder really well and frequently hits the scoreboard. Clark is a hard at it mid that is surprisingly clean with his disposal, even when being tackled or directly pressured he manages to hit targets by hand or foot

IN/C: Noah Long (Bendigo Pioneers/ VIC C), Kane Bevan (West Perth/ WA), Adam D'Aloia (WWT Eagles/ SA), Matthew Jeffersen (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC M)

Long is a very similar player to Caleb Serong, just high workrate, ferocious and doesn't let his size stop him from having a crack and really troubling opposition players through the midfield. Bevan is a versatile prospect, and at 192 cm he could very well grow to KPP height but keep his strengths as a midfielder, especially his contested ball winning. D'Aloia has impressed everyone that's watched him, even getting a BOG medal in one of the SA U19's games, as well as the SANFL U18s Grand Final, a hard at it and hard working midfielder. Jeffersen is an exciting tall utility, with hisa best performances coming as a forward where his leading patterns and accuracy will impress many

That’s 700 points including our first pick being pick 18 yeah?
Which means that if we trade that first pick into 2023 it means we need to find the value of that pick as well.

Assuming we're premiers and Ashcroft goes pick 1, yeah. If list spots open up as predicted that will be easy. Would still require some compromise for future drafts but if we're premiers and Ashcroft is pick 1 who gives a ****?
