I reckon Doc will take a month to recover from chemo and should be good to go for pre season.

He will a least be doing some form of training. He hasn't had surgery and effect of chemo goes away in 2-3 weeks.

Don't ride off the Doc. He will be back swinging and playing round 1.
Hope you're right but this appears very optimistic. Unless the chemo is a light dose and infrequent during the 12 weeks of therapy, I would think that there would be lingering effects long after 2-3 weeks. Granted, the more serious effects of chemo will have dissipated... such as nausea , weakness... but other lesser effects do linger

I wonder if Jones’s decision to retire changes our “commitment” to re-sign Cottrell and/or LOB? I certainly hope so because we are now dangerously exposed for a lack of quality and depth. Obviously the trade period is past us so it’ll be hard to get a quick fix ready made replacement in the draft but I’d be thinking about putting our future first on the table to try and get back into this years first round to get Gibcus or Van Rooyen. I’d also be looking at the SSP draft to get Rory Thompson or Schlensog. We’ve been thrown a curveball by Jones’s retirement so Austin needs to make the necessary adjustment.

I know in my own experience I suffered soft tissue deterioration and after 3 years still have lingering joint aches. Admittedly I didn’t have the rehab and training regimen or discipline that Doc has to get him back up to speed. Then there is the “chemo brain” effect which I suffered. Not proven to be chemo effect but more likely to be a bit like ptsd. Who knows, everyone’s different and will recover differently.

Who are some key position options to replace Jones? I reckon we might consider Lienart from Port Adelaide.
There someone with similar name to Allir in SANFL that maybe worth a shot.
Guess we could also use pick 64 in the National Draft to re-draft Levi Casboult to play key defence this season. Unlikely but still an option I would think.
It more likely we just wait to supplemental selection period in summer to decide on some mature age option to train with us and go that way.
I think there someone I heard from Williamstown that was good in key defence but cannot recall what name he was.

It very interesting Gold Coast de-listed Rory Thompson. If he at all close to returning from injury, would not be the worst option to take at 64.

Now that the schock of the retirement has worn off a bit, my mind returns to wondering when the list management team knew this would be an issue for him. Surely they've been in discussions for a while about this - I doubt that they wouldn't have discussed vaccination with players prior to the end of season. Obviously they had no idea which way the mandate would have gone until after that, but I would imagine that it would have been something they were aware was a possibility during the trade period. But perhaps they've been a bit blindsided by this too - I feel like Austin's comments recently about the draft didn't sound like someone who felt a need to draft another key back.

Yeah, Blake Schlensog would be handy.. Richmond and Cats both interested in him apparently though?

The Suns currently have picks No.3, 97 and 115 in this year's draft with the last two picks set to be used on Greenwood and Thompson

Draft Thompson ahead of GC redrafting him?

footyfan1978 - Leek Alleer?

Any chance you guys will get any sort of compensation(draft picks) considering Liams one of your more important players and he’s only retiring because of the rule that has been brought in

Considering he was fit and healthy and under contract and forced into retirement we should but we are Carlton so probably not.

The guy hasn't spread Covid past two years and no evidence he will spread it next 10 years. I am hoping we are allowed to replenish our list,

He gets to feel he is a free man now without shackles - thats worth more than all the money in the world. Thats the proof.

No. He may have left the club but he still lives in a society where a vaccine is important.

Liam has always been a free man and it is naive to suggest his freedom has been secured now that he has retired. You post as though the AFL is the only workplace that has made the vaccine mandatory. This is simply not the case.

You haven't offered proof of anything. You've simply rehashed a tired rhetoric which isn't even accurate.

Vaccines are important but you know some people just dont want to feel like guinea pigs and live within their own conscious.

I have rehashed nothing - you just dont understand the simple tenets that a human spirit needs to be free.

Yawn. Not the thread for it. Be gone.

. I'd draft Rory Thompson for sure, now that Jones is retired, assuming Thompson is ready to resume playing. He been injured a lot in recent years, but if Gold Coast de-listed him thinking no one else could afford him, well now Jones retired , we probably got the money to afford to draft Thompson. I assume the reason Suns de-listed knowing they could re-draft was no fear another club could afford to draft him and pay his contract.

That is the one from SANFL, yes, Leek Alleer that could not remember his exact name. He worth looking into seriously if Thompson taken back by Suns before we can pick him.

Not sure what the AFL can do, definitely won’t give us draft picks. Maybe we could be given first pick in the supplement list so we have the opportunity to replace Liam with the best available tall back in the state leagues.

Question, which given the late hour, hope it makes sense... Let's say AFL allows us to remove LJ from list for list lodgement purposes, and we are able to sign a DFA or FA tomorrow... Could someone who applied for 2020 draft but not selected then be signed up before the ND - even if they have put their name in again in 2021 for the ND?

Given that we have planned to go with only 36 Senior players, we have a spot to pick a DFA.
Ideally, the AFL will allow us to remove Jones from the list before the draft, but worse case scenario, we can replace him, and Cottrell just has to wait to the SSP period to officially go back on the rookie list.

Sounds similar to what I experienced.
We hear the word chemo bandied around a lot and I believe we have become a little blasé about this therapy.

Even though my late wife went through chemo in 1993 and I saw the horrific effects it had on her, when it came to my 'turn' 25 years later I believed that the regime had improved immensely. It has...but it still has shocking effects on the human body.

When the oncologist noted the impacts it was having on me, he offered to reduce the level... I demurred...he shook his head and conceded but said " You do know it is a poison and it can kill you?"

3 years after chemo I still have ongoing foot problems caused by the loss of skin from the soles of my feet during chemo, have no fingerprints (lol) and suffer weeping eyes frequently but am thankful that we have the great medical facilities that exist in this lucky country.

In short, Doc is much younger that I am and obviously would be more resilient physically, so I hope that his rehabilitation is swift and the after effects are negligible but we should temper our expectations and hopefully allow him the time to heal properly.
