I've said for a long time that we need Ed to be replaced for the team to take the next step. I have never meant that as a negative - Ed is a champ, sets incredible standards and wrings every drop of ability out of himself through sheer power of will.

Once someone comes along and makes Ed's spot their own, that's when we move past him. I don't think we are far away, but he will certainly be on our list and a key part of our team next year.

I said it last year but I think Philp has the potential to be that man. Hopefully he can have a big preseason because I think he brings those same qualities of coachability, discipline and ferocious tackling. Hopefully he can add value with a little more explosiveness, clean hands and tidier disposal.

Probably Ramsay from that list. SPS could be on his way out. We have no idea how many changes the club intends to make or who will ask for a trade in/out. I do know Curnow is still best 22 and drives standards.
Fair enough...
Personally I wouldn't let go of a 20yo Ramsey, that has shown massive progression this year in the VFL,
for Curnow who has what maybe 1-2 years of VFL/AFL left...

Cameron Guthrie still hasn’t signed with the Cats and is an unrestricted free agent. Would be an amazing pickup if he’s looking to move. May still have a soft spot for the club. If the Cats win the flag he may be easier to get.

Interesting how much development there may still be in front of Dow. He’s averaging 10 touches In the first quarter over the last month but is only averaging 21 disposals in total. If he can start to build the tank to get involved for longer (which I think he can) were in for a very big upswing in both himself and the teams fortunes.

Ran 14.6KMS on the weekend, don't think it's his tank that is the issue in regards to staying involved

If he's running out the game in terms of KMs run, but the majority of his touches are coming very early in the game, what would you say is the underlying issue here?

I haven’t seen the stats but I don’t thinks he’s been played in the middle as much later in the game - which may be related to lack of a tank

Like he’s there first and last quarters but in the middle he seems to play elsewhere or on the bench or just off the ball

One of the few Geel players I'd say yes to.

Eddie was bought back onto the list to mentor the youth and bridge the Koori gap within the club so that the players he passes loyalty onto then pass it on etc etc.
I think the club needs to be very careful about how we handle his time.
We will be enjoying happy contented players for years to come because of EB.

Interesting. I would not have offered him another contract despite overall having a more than serviceable year, especially with a big squeeze on list spots. But if he is happy to split his time between the VFL and AFL and predominantly conduct himself as a playing coach and mentor, then his value should easily outweigh his on field contribution.

Regardless of what happens in the ruck position in coming weeks, does anyone else think we may have found another midfield rotation in JSOS ? He was seriously good in the middle.
He didn’t win too many ruck contests but his clearance work was spectacular

I wrote this on March 9 2020:

If Teague was in experiment mode then why no centre square involvement for Silvagni? Who cares that we had no other forward options, it's a practice match.

JSOS into the midfield is one of the most obvious positional progressions I've seen, he's made for being a strong-bodied inside clearance player. And has already proven it to a degree v Freo last year. And is not being played there.

It's obviously been forced up on us due to injury but I really hope they can keep this going, Jack belongs in the midfield (pinch-hitting forward) long term.

If the club signs Eddie on again to play next year then this shows that the very people involved in this decision have NFI what’s so ever, with the greatest respect to the little champ who has had a wonderful year personally we need to move on, let him start his off field role with the club...

Maybe it is a Carlton reserves spot. So he can develop the kids inside 50 there.

Sounds like he’ll be retained on the rookie list with the people involved atm, if Teague retains his position as coach then Eddie will be playing seniors, no doubt about it...

Depending on the outcome of the review, this decision atm is on hold until we start making any types of changes which then may take on a completely different direction altogether...

I don’t mind the idea of Eddie playing in the reserves as an listed VFL experienced head and onfield leader along with his off field role, that would be fantastic for the youngsters, just think we need to move on and find our next seniors forward for the future...

We're not so flush with quality small forwards that I'd be tossing Eddie aside if he and the coaches/medicos think he's got another decent year in him. Plenty said he should have gone end of last year, and he's been more than handy this season.

If Durdin was killing it in the ressies, maybe there's a stronger argument. But he looks like he could use some more time at that level - even if it's only half a season - before making his way into the seniors.

I'm liking Fisher being used on-ball later in games, as we've seen the last few weeks, and he could certainly increase his mid minutes depending on the makeup of the squad. SPS is in no mans land - not sure if he's a mid, a forward or sliding back into defense. Not even sure if he's on our list next year or if we float him for a trade. Owies had a good patch, hitting the wall a bit now though. Honey looked the goods on the weekend, but no guarantees he can sustain it consistently moving forward.

Call it three spots on-field being shared between Fisher, Honey, Owies, Betts and Durdin. Good to have the option to rotate based on form, and have coverage for injury.

Betts on the rookie list gives us some serious class when he's firing. And if he's not, or enough of the kids are showing more, then he's more than handy depth and some wonderful leadership in the ressies.

And with the mid season draft, we're not even committing to a full season if he falls off a cliff. He can retire mid-year and we can grab a kid or mature ager as we see fit.

With the reported squeeze at Geelong and Guthrie not having re-signed, SPS a chance to go back to WA... does that lend credence to this possbility?
29 in august, can't recall him suffering many injuries in his time, 182 games since 2011, should have another solid 4-5yrs in him. Not against seeking him out.

He seems to alternate quarters through the middle. e.g. spend a bulk of the 1st and 3rd attending stoppages, but much less in the 2nd and 4th.

That + less high intensity running as the game progresses could explain the drop-offs.

Dow’s ability to grow/develop the last few weeks has been a great surprise, from only getting possessions at a stoppage, to being involved in a few actual chains of possession on the weekend and providing a forward option.

His kicking is so much better, the lack of impact in the second half in matches, is a clear area to turn his focus.

Very happy for him and hopefully it fills him with the confidence he needs.
