What makes you think that? Wasnt Wells retained in some kind of welfare role post his playing days? Our core leadership group is strong with Pendles, Adams, Moore et al so hopefully around the footy side of things they can get him to knuckle down.

Just what a Mess the Club is at the Moment in

There is no doubt the club has made some very poor decisions in the past few years related mainly to list management and salary cap. The flow on effect is of course the issues around the board none of which should impact the day to day running of the club

Outside of that, and the impact of the soft cap which is driven by Covid, I think the club is in pretty good shape. It will have systems in place after the 'do better' report and I think if I remember correctly the club has already implemented significant reforms around some of its policies and processed prior to the release of the report.

The media often make things seem far worse than what they actually are. I would have confidence that we could manage Stengle well if he was recruited to the club.

Callow and Stengle are no brainers if they are available - free hit for 18 months to see what they can deliver on low wage. If they show something keep them, if not we've not spent anything to get them.

Stengle has made a few off field mistakes and will know he is on his last chance - need to ensure we have the right support mechanisms in place.

Just do it
Lot of “no brainers” being listed in this thread
Hope we’ve got enough picks

Agree w this

I’m still furious about trade week but in terms functionality and the purpose of GW to identify and get us back on track, no doubt we have work to do, but with good governance, list management, it can turn around quick enough to give hope

Pies are all but certain to take Callow 2nd Pick.
Stengle or Ash Johnson is the next one.

You mean Callow with our 1st pick (pick 3) and then one of the other two with our 2nd pick? That would work for me. Callow needs to be first. No guarantee he will survive til the 2nd round

I don't understand the whole argument anyway. Yes there's a far greater importance around being able to apply defensive pressure, but that's also countered by bigger congestion meaning that contested marking and having the bulk to not get pushed under the contest and thus protecting the drop zone and bringing it to ground, rather than getting seperation on the lead is more crucial than ever before.
It will always come down to the quality of the player.

This is a transitional stage, we are still getting strategies and personnel in place - and there will likely be missteps and fine tuning to be done - and after that is bedded down THEN we can start making genuine progress.

BUT . . .

We need to get the club back into the hands of the supporters again - even if just superficially - love dies without reciprocity.

It's a bit of a myth really. Whoever we take, get it wrong and it impacts list development.

What’s the latest thinking on who we’re going to pick?Callow,Stengle?Stengle,Johnson?Callow,Johnson? It’s getting a bit murky now,

FWIW, I'm keen on Callow, then whichever front & centre crumber (Stengle?) they rate highest. Callow, McMahon, McCreery, Ginnivan & Stengle seems like a good balance of types for development.

Can't absolve the club being their own worst enemy in some of that. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Your assertion that the club has made some very poor decisions a case in point. If you break down most of the contentious decisions, they in and of themselves weren't poor, they just didn't lead to the desired outcome.

Post 2018 GF
  • decide to keep the list together and push to go 1 better - actually a sound decision supported by many
  • decide to recruit a top 10 midfielder to cash in while the window is open rather than build through the draft - midfield spanked in the GF, in and of itself, a good decision
  • deciding that that midfielder should be Beams - a divisive decision that ultimately went pear shaped
Post 2020 season
  • decide the list isn't likely to achieve ultimate success - declining performance year by year tends to support that
  • decide to refresh the list - in and of itself a good decision
  • past decisions combined with a reduced instead of expanding cap caused TPP issues, decide to offload players to redress that - sound decision, divest or breach
  • deciding to target Stevo, Treloar and Phillips - various opinion on each player's departure but the biggest criticism was the confusing messaging
The only really poor decision with the benefit of hindsight was recruiting Beams. Don't get him and we don't backend contracts for Treloar and others. Don't get him and we add an additional 1st round draft selection or 2 to the list. But would it necessarily have been as bad if he didn't get injured and had played out his contract?

The implementation of some of those decisions wasn't flash either. "Keeping the list together" should never require contract extensions with triggers for significant salary growth or additional years for fringe players. Players like Phillips, Stevo and Cox never should have been on the money they were reportedly getting.

Looking at it in totality, you can understand why people see it as a clusterf%$#. Why wouldn't the media push that barrow.

Thorne for me. Think he's a very exciting prospect.

Zorko was in a club overflowing with talent and resources courtesy of being propped up by the AFL due to being a startup club.

This is not to decry Zorko's talent - which is attested by those B&F's - but he was surrounded and supported by an immensely talented team.

Again, Zorko's immense talent is unquestioned.
Until 2019 the best Brisbane ever finished in Zorko's time was 12th. He was not part of a talented team.

I'd be astonished if Freeman would ever consider acknowledging us let alone play for us.
I hadn't heard that but it certainly doesn't jive with either his father or his own attitudes in the past.
Both he and his father spewed a lot of bile publicly against the club.

I have heard the stories on these boards about Freeman and his father and their anger but can't recall ever seeing any articles or quotes on it.

I did a search now and can't find anything from the time. Did you see any quotes anywhere from them to verify this

I watch his recent interview and he spoke pretty glowingly of Collingwood. He was very positive re Bucks and Pendles and the relationship he developed with Ben Reid in rehab. The interview went through his whole career and he came off as a really positive person who hasn't been tarnished by his tough time in footy. By his own admission he is a footy head still and wants to stay in the industry. He did say of leaving Collingwood he didnt want to do it initially but I think his management probably talked him around to the benefits in the end. He did ring Bucks to tell him he wanted out which is a good way to do it.

I wonder if the talk on these boards at that time was just a rumour. Would be interested if you have better knowledge.
